《Basics Are a Lifetime of Training — A Path Connecting the Visible and Invisible Worlds》
Basics are the beginning of martial arts — and the proper path toward human completeness.
⚔️ If someone does not understand what basics truly are,
then age and years of experience mean nothing.
From time to time, I see new “Haedong Kumdo Associations” pop up in the U.S., Mexico, Germany, South Africa, and elsewhere.
Just last week, I saw another post announcing the creation of a new group.
I felt a heavy weight in my heart once again.
Anyone is free to create an organization. However, if one calls themselves a leader, they must understand the basics and deeply consider how their actions will affect the students who follow under them.
🛡️ What are the Basics?
Many think basics are simply a few beginner movements.
That is only the surface.
■ Basics are a bridge connecting two worlds:
○Visible world
— posture, principles, balance, movement
○Invisible world
— flow of Ki (energy), direction, intention, vitality
Only when these two worlds become fully unified can we call it true martial arts practice.
☆ What happens when basics are not understood?
○ 10 years of training becomes nothing more than imitation.
○ 30 years still becomes parroting the same actions.
○ There is no creation of one’s own world.
○ As the body weakens, pain arrives — if one is lucky, that’s all.
And the true purpose of martial arts and of human life remains unknown until the end.
● If you do not understand the basics,
age, rank, and title are meaningless.
Only from the moment one understands the basics
does true training begin.
This is what our ancestors followed by the principle of nature.
■ The Starting Point of Basics — The Flow of Energy (Ki)
Training is the process of attuning oneself to the wavelength, energy, and love of nature.
Our:
○thoughts
○words
○actions
When these three align
and unite the “physical me(self of my body)” and the “mental me(self of my mind)” as one,
energy becomes love,
and its accumulation creates the Ki-Mu Body.
From form → to flow
→ to life.
This is the essence and core of basics in Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
🌱 Every Practitioner Must Return to Basics
No matter how flexible, strong, or experienced one may be —
Without basics,
the ultimate purpose of martial arts can never be reached.
Not the shape of movement,
but:
the direction of energy
the unity of mind and body
resonance with nature’s vibration
More simply:
○ Where does energy go? (direction)
○ How does it function? (opening and blockage)
○ How do we follow it? (harmony and balance)
These are the basics of basics.
---
If someone still does not realize this - they simply learn again.
That is the correct attitude of a practitioner.
They do not know because they were never taught in this way.
When one finally realizes,
they understand the expression,
“Doesn’t recognize the letter ‘A’ while writing it", because everything was already within them.
Concepts like Hapki (Aiki), Yin-Yang, Taeguk, Mugeuk — all point to what cannot be seen, and their meanings have always been complete.
We simply failed to learn aligned with nature’s principles.
This is why our ancestors emphasized the unity of literature(pen) and martial practice(sword), and it is worth reflecting on how that differs from Samurai culture.
✨ Conclusion
Basics are not limited to beginner techniques. They are a lifelong guide — a light house for one’s path in training and in living.
To align:
visible movement
with the invisible flow of energy
This is the true basic.
This is how martial arts becomes a path toward completing the human being.
So we must not only train the body,
but constantly study and cultivate the mind.
To understand, experience, and follow
the Skills · Philosophy · Medicine of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu —
continuous learning is basic.
When there is no deeper thinking or reflection, no further development can be expected.

Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo
JS Kim — Bloemfontein, South Africa 🇿🇦
📌 Concept Reference: Kimuche (氣舞體)
(Official Philosophy Definition — Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo)
Kimuche (氣舞體)
A human state achieved through continuous integration of body, mind, and Ki —
where one becomes aligned with natural energy and love.
> Kimuche is
Self-magnetization aligned with the universal wave,
and self-cultivation embodied as a unified energy-body.
This state is gradually formed through:
Awareness of Energy Flow
Harmony among thoughts, speech, and actions
Daily resonance with nature’s vibration
Accumulation of love as life force
Thus, Kimuche represents:
The physical manifestation of spiritual growth
The wholeness (body-mind-energy) in martial arts
The ultimate result of lifelong practice
> 🜂 From form → to flow → to life.
This is the foundational philosophy of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu.
