It is impossible to see two worlds.

두 세상을 보는 것은 불가능하다.

1 Perception is consistent. What you see reflects your thinking. And your thinking but reflects your choice of what you want to see. Your values are determiners of this, for what you value you must want to see, believing what you see is really there. No one can see a world his mind has not accorded value. And no one can fail to look upon what he believes he wants.

1. 지각에는 일관성이 있다. 네가 보는 것은 너의 생각을 반영한다. 너의 생각은 단지 네가 보기를 원한다고 선택한 것을 반영한다. 그리고 이것은 너의 가치관에 의해 결정된다. 너는 분명 네가 가치 있게 여기는 것을 보기를 원하며, 네가 보는 것이 정말로 있다고 믿기 때문이다. 자신의 마음이 가치를 부여하지 않는 세상을 볼 수 있는 자는 아무도 없으며, 자신이 원한다고 믿는 것을 보지 못할 자도 아무도 없다.

2 Yet who can really hate and love at once? Who can desire what he does not want to have reality? And who can choose to see a world of which he is afraid? Fear must make blind, for this its weapon is—that which you fear to see you cannot see. Love and perception thus go hand in hand, but fear obscures in darkness what is there.

2. 하지만 그 누가 동시에 정말로 증오하면서 사랑할 수 있겠는가? 그 누가 자신이 원하지 않는 것이 실재성을 갖기를 열망할 수 있겠는가? 또한, 그 누가 자신이 두려워하는 세상을 보기로 선택할 수 있겠는가? 두려움은 분명 눈멀게 할 것이다. 두려움의 무기는 바로, 너는 네가 보기를 두려워하는 것을 볼 수 없다는 것이기 때문이다. 이와 같이 사랑과 지각은 손잡고 함께 가지만, 두려움은 거기에 있는 것을 어둠 속에 감춘다.

3 What, then, can fear project upon the world? What can be seen in darkness that is real? Truth is eclipsed by fear, and what remains is but imagined. Yet what can be real in blind imaginings of panic borne? What would you want that this is shown to you? What would you wish to keep in such a dream?

3. 그렇다면 두려움이 과연 무엇을 세상에 투사할 수 있겠는가? 실제인 그 무엇이 어둠 속에서 보일 수 있겠는가? 두려움은 진리의 빛을 가리며, 남아있는 것이라고는 단지 상상된 것뿐이다. 하지만 공황상태가 낳은 눈먼 상상물들 가운데 무엇이 실제일 수 있겠는가? 너는 이것이 너에게 보이도록 만들기 위해 무엇을 원하려는가? 너는 이러한 꿈속에서 무엇을 간직하기를 소망하려는가?

4 Fear has made everything you think you see. All separation, all distinctions, and the multitude of differences you believe make up the world. They are not there. Love's enemy has made them up. Yet love can have no enemy, and so they have no cause, no being, and no consequence. They can be valued but remain unreal. They can be sought, but they can not be found.

4. 네가 본다고 생각하는 것은 전부 두려움이 만들었다. 너는 세상이 그 모든 분리와 구분, 수많은 차이점으로 만들어졌다고 믿는다. 하지만 그것들은 존재하지 않는다. 사랑의 적이 그것들을 만들어냈다. 하지만 사랑에는 적이 있을 수 없으며, 따라서 그것들은 원인도 존재도 결과도 전혀 없다. 네가 그것들을 가치 있게 여길 수는 있지만, 그렇다고 해도 그것들은 여전히 실제가 아니다. 네가 그것들을 구할 수는 있지만, 찾을 수는 없다.

5 Today we will not seek for them nor waste this day in seeking not what can be found. It is impossible to see two worlds which have no overlap of any kind. Seek for the one; the other disappears. But one remains. They are the range of choice beyond which your decision cannot go. The real and the unreal are all there is to choose between, and nothing more than these.

5. 오늘 우리는 그것들을 구하지 않을 것이며, 찾을 수 없는 것을 구하느라 오늘 하루를 허비하지도 않을 것이다. 일치하는 점이 전혀 없는 두 세상을 보는 것은 불가능하다. 그중 한 세상을 구하면, 다른 세상은 사라진다. 하지만 한 세상은 남는다. 그 두 세상은 너의 결정이 넘어설 수 없는 선택 범위다. 실제인 것과 실제가 아닌 것이 선택할 수 있는 모든 것이며, 그 이상은 아무것도 없다.

6 Today we will attempt no compromise where none is possible. The world you see is proof you have already made a choice as all-embracing as its opposite. What we would learn today is more than just the Lesson that you cannot see two worlds. It also teaches that the one you see is quite consistent from the point of view from which you see it. It is all a piece because it stems from one emotion, and reflects its source in everything you see.

6. 오늘 우리는 어떤 타협도 불가능한 곳에서 타협을 시도하지 않겠다. 네가 보는 세상은 네가 이미 어떤 선택을 내렸다는 증거다. 그것은 그 반대의 선택과 마찬가지로 모든 것을 포괄하는 선택이다. 오늘 우리가 배우고자 하는 것은 단지 두 세상을 볼 수 없다는 레슨 이상이다. 그것은 또한 네가 보는 세상은 너의 관점에서 아주 일관성이 있다는 것도 가르친다. 네가 보는 세상은 모두 똑같다. 그것은 하나의 감정에서 비롯되며, 네가 보는 모든 것에서 그 근원을 반영하기 때문이다.

7 Six times today in thanks and gratitude we gladly give five minutes to the thought which ends all compromise and doubt and go beyond them all as one. We will not make a thousand meaningless distinctions, nor attempt to bring with us a little part of unreality as we devote our minds to finding only what is real.

7. 오늘 우리는 감사하는 마음으로, 모든 타협과 의심을 종식하고 그 모든 것을 하나로서 초월하는 생각을 위해 5분씩 여섯 번의 시간을 마련한다. 오로지 실제인 것만을 찾는 데 전념하는 동안 우리는 수없이 많은 무의미한 구분을 하지 않을 것이며, 비실재의 작은 부분을 가져가려고 시도하지도 않을 것이다.

8 Begin your searching for the other world by asking for a strength beyond your own, and recognize what it is you seek. You do not want illusions. And you come to these five minutes emptying your hands of all the petty treasures of this world. You wait for God to help you as you say:

8. 너 자신의 힘을 넘어서는 힘을 요청함으로써 다른 세상에 대한 추구를 시작하고, 네가 과연 무엇을 구하는지 인식하라. 너는 환상을 원하지 않는다. 너의 두 손에서 이 세상의 하찮은 보물을 전부 비워내고 5분 동안의 연습에 임하라. 다음과 같이 말하면서 하느님이 너를 도우러 오시기를 기다려라:

9 It is impossible to see two worlds.

Let me accept the strength God offers me

And see no value in this world that I

May find my freedom and deliverance.

이 세상에서 아무런 가치도 보지 않겠다.

그럼으로써 나는 자유와 해방을 찾을 것이다.

10 God will be there. For you have called upon the great unfailing Power Who will take this giant step with you in gratitude. Nor will you fail to see His thanks expressed in tangible perception and in truth. You will not doubt what you will look upon. For though it is perception, it is not the kind of seeing that your eyes alone have ever seen before. And you will know God's strength upheld as you made this choice.

10. 하느님이 그곳에 계실 것이다. 너는 너에 대한 감사로 이 거대한 발걸음을 함께 내디딜 변치 않을 위대한 권능을 요청했기 때문이다. 그리고 너는 반드시 그분의 감사가 지각으로 감지될 수 있게, 진실하게 표현된 것을 볼 것이다. 너는 네가 바라보게 될 것을 의심하지 않을 것이다. 그것은 비록 지각이지만, 전에 눈으로만 보았던 그런 종류의 봄seeing이 아니기 때문이다. 그리고 너는, 네가 이 선택을 내릴 때 하느님의 힘이 떠받쳐 주었음을 알게 될 것이다.

11 Dismiss temptation easily today whenever it arises merely by remembering the limits on your choice. The unreal or the real, the false or true is what you see, and only what you see. Perception is consistent with your choice, and hell or Heaven comes to you as one.

11. 오늘 유혹이 일어날 때마다 단지 네 선택의 범위를 기억함으로써 유혹을 가볍게 물리쳐라. 너는 실제가 아닌 것이나 실제인 것, 거짓된 것이나 참된 것을 보며, 단지 그것들만 본다. 지각은 너의 선택과 일치하며, 그에 따라 지옥이나 천국이 따라온다.

12 Accept a little part of hell as real, and you have damned your eyes and cursed your sight, and what you will behold is hell indeed. Yet the release of Heaven still remains within your range of choice to take the place of everything that hell would show to you. All you need say to any part of hell, whatever form it takes, is simply this:

12. 네가 만약 지옥의 작은 부분을 실제인 것으로 받아들인다면, 이미 너 자신의 눈을 정죄하고 시각을 저주한 것이다. 따라서 네가 바라볼 것은 정녕 지옥이다. 하지만 천국을 풀어주어 지옥이 네게 보여주려는 모든 것을 대체하게 하는 것은 여전히 너의 선택 범위 안에 있다. 네가 지옥의 어떤 부분을 보든, 지옥이 어떤 형식을 취하든 상관없이, 그것에게 단지 다음과 같이 말하라:

13 It is impossible to see two worlds.

I seek my freedom and deliverance,

And this is not a part of what I want.
