- Introduction - I'd like to welcome all of you to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). My name is Sang-Hoon, Lee and I work in the Process Plant Business Department. Before I run the company film, I'd like to give you a brief introduction to HHI. HHI was established in 1972 in As the largest shipyard in the world, HHI covers over 2,000 acres, which includes 1,200 acres of production plants and 800 acres of apartment complexes, schools, recreational centers and other necessary welfare facilities. There are about 26,000 employees and 300 foreign engineers who work for their products & classification associations. HHI is divided into 6 Business Divisions: Shipbuilding, Offshore & Engineering, Industrial Plant & Engineering, Engine & Machinery, Electro-Electric Systems, and Construction Equipment. Over the past 33 years, HHI has built more than 1,150 vessels ranging from bulk carriers and oil tankers to LNG/LPG carriers, FPSO, semi-submersible drilling rigs, and naval ships. HHI has also received an order to build 3 submarines from the Korean Ministry of Defense on This year, HHI is expecting to deliver 70 ships to customers all over the world. The company’s goal for this year is to achieve "Quality-Oriented" management, reaching 7.4 billion USD in total sales and 6 billion USD in exports. HHI envisions itself as a "Global Leader" and so far has been on the right track. The company will continue to focus on creating and maintaining the world's best heavy industries company. <회사 영화 상영> - The plant on your right is a hull shop in which steel plates are cut, shaped and assembled into blocks according to the ship’s design. The bottom and sides of the ship are also made here. Normally about 150 to 200 large steel blocks are required to assemble one ship. - Industrial Plant & Engineering Division - The factory on your left belongs to the Industrial Plant Division. In this factory, important plant equipment and steel structures are produced and supplied to our customers. For example, power & chemical plant facilities, floodgates for large dams, and various cranes are manufactured here. In fact, HHI supplied the main equipment for Gori Nuclear Power Plant and POSCO. The company has also acquired the Quality Certification for their products from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). HHI provides a complete range of services from design and manufacturing to installation of many facilities on a turnkey basis. - # 2 Shipyard - This is the # 2 shipyard where nearly 400 million USD was invested in 130 acres in 1994. With these new facilities, HHI is able to increase the production of VLCCs (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier). There are 2 new dry docks where 8 VLCCs can be built per year. Moreover, this yard is automated in the fields of processing, small & large fabrication, and others. In the Panel Assembly Shop, large steel blocks are made, which reduces the building time in the docks. This yard is regarded as one of the most modernized VLCC shipyards in the world. - Steel Stock Yard - On your left, you can see the - # 1 Quay - This area was a small fishing village with a few hundred people before HHI was established 32 years ago. Since then, this area has quickly developed into the most important industrial district in Korea. Here at the outfitting quay, finishing touches are put on the ships. The total length of the HHI quay is 5km. The ship on your left is DWT ordered from UUU and used for carrying UUU. It is UUUm long, UUUm wide, and UUUm deep. T Shelter house: Weatherproof, movable workshop for various fitting work. T Transporter: Equipment that transports blocks to the work place. - Large Block Assembly Shop - On your right, is the Large Block Assembly Shop. The bows and sterns of ships and bent steel blocks are made in this shop. These blocks are brought onto the supporting poles in the pre-outfitting yard and fitted with pipes. After the pre-outfitting work is done, these heavy steel blocks are transported to the dry dock on a special vehicle called a 'Transporter.' - Goliath Crane - See the huge red cranes that say 'Hyundai'? They are called 'Goliath Cranes'. A Goliath Crane lifts and moves steel blocks, engines, and propellers. This Crane is 82m high, 140m wide and has a 450-ton capacity. It is operated by electricity. The monthly electric bill for one Goliath Crane is about 1,500 USD. - Between #1 and #2 Dock - On either side of you, there are 2 dry docks. Steel blocks made in the hull fabrication shop are moved to the dry dock by a transporter. The dock on the left is the #1 dry dock with a capacity of 500,000 tons and is designated exclusively for LNG production. The dock on your right is the #2 dry dock and has a capacity of 700,000 tons. Ships are built from the bottom to the top by welding steel blocks together one by one. After the hull is completed, a deckhouse and engine are installed on the ship. Painting is completed in the dry dock and then the dock is flooded with seawater to launch the ship. Finally, the red gate at the end of a dry dock is opened and tugboats pull the ship into the quay for finishing touches. It takes about eight to ten months to finish a ship. HHI is able to construct about 60 large-scale ships per year. Now we are building a UUU-dwt ordered by UUU. This ship is UUUm long, UUUm wide and UUUm deep. 【#1dock: 389mI80mI12.7m Watering: 3h30min./Dewatering: 6h30min.】 【#2dock: 508mI80mI12.7m Watering: 4h30min./Dewatering: 7h30min.】 【#3dock: 640mI92mI13.2m】 - Shipbuilding Results - Since this shipyard was established in 1972, HHI has built and exported over 1,033 vessels to countries all over the world. Currently our company supplies 15% of the ships in the world. The largest ship that HHI ever built was a 365,000-dwt ore carrier that was exported to Norway in 1986. That carrier measured 350m long, 63m wide and 30m deep. It was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest cargo ship ever. However, it's not just the size of our ships, but the quality that sets them apart in the ship market. In fact, the Twin Skeg VLCC, with a capacity of 315,000-dwt, was delivered to Sweden in 2001 and was selected as world's best-ship for that year. In 2002, Ro-Pax was awarded “world's best-ship” for 2001. Since 1983, ships built by HHI have made best-ship lists for 20 consecutive years. I Twin Skeg VLCC: Length: 333m Width: 70m Depth: 25.6m I Ro-Pax: Length: 211m Width: 29.5m Depth: 15.6m - Engine Shop - This is the engine shop where about 150 large size diesel engines are manufactured each year. We can produce up to 93,360 BHP diesel engines. The completed engines are supplied to domestic and foreign shipyards. They account for 35% of the current world engine market. An engine's average height is 12m to 14m (3 to 5 stories), and the length is 20m. Some large engines weigh as much as 1,800 tons and usually cost about 10% of the ship's total price. - The Front of #3 Quay - In the quay on your left, finishing touches, such as the addition of electricity and communication equipments to ships are undertaken. Then, the ship is tested in a series of sea-trials and operation tests in the East Sea. The UUU ship on your left was ordered by UUU. - The Process of Shipbuilding - I would like to explain the process of shipbuilding to you in detail. ① First, HHI receives an order from ship owners through bidding. ② After, skilled designers create the ship’s design, aided by computers. ③ According to that design, each part of the ship is manufactured in the hull fabrication shop. ④ Then each steel block is transported to a dry dock by the special 'Transporter' vehicles. ⑤ The Goliath Crane then lifts the steel blocks and the real shipbuilding process starts in the dry dock as they are assembled one by one from the bottom up. ⑥ After assembly, an engine propeller and deckhouse are installed. After the painting is finished, the ship is set afloat by flooding the dry dock with seawater. Then, the dock gate is opened and the ship is towed out to the quay by tugboats. ⑦ After the ship is moved to the quay, the electronic and communication equipment is installed. ⑧ After the finishing touches are completed, the ship sails out to the East Sea for operations tests under the supervision of the shipowner. ⑨ The final step is the delivery of the ship to the shipowner. - Propeller Shop - This is the propeller shop. Usually a propeller is around 8m in diameter and averages 30 to 40 tons in weight. It is made out of aluminum, iron, nickel and copper and takes about 3 months to assemble. One propeller costs around 125,000 to 600,000 USD. HHI produces 200 propellers per year. - Foundry Shop - In the foundry shop on your left, 50 tons of slag and 30,000 tons of foundry steel are produced per year. - Forging Shop - On your left, is a forging shop. Steel ingots are heated, struck by a large computer-operated hammer (10,000ton forging press), and gradually strengthened. Forged steel is transformed into various engine parts in a mechanical plant. - Maritime Research Institute - On the right, is the Maritime Research Institute. This institute was built in 1984. About 153 research employees with a Doctorate or Master's Degree in related fields work to develop better and newer technologies. Various tests for resistance, propulsion, and ship vibration are conducted in the deep-water towing tank, circulating water channel, cavitation tunnel, and other such facilities. The results of these tests are analyzed and then incorporated in the real shipbuilding. - Paint Shop - This is the paint plant, where steel blocks are coated to prevent rust and other degradation. The total amount of paint used on one 150,000-dwt ship is roughly 300,000 liters. - Electro-Electric Systems Division - The plant on your right is the Electro-Electric Systems Division. Various products such as transformers, circuit breakers, distribution boards and other electrical parts used in railways or subways are made here. - Construction Equipment Division - The Construction Equipment Division is on the hill to your right. Many products for construction and industrial projects such as forklifts, excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, and skid loaders are produced here. Moreover, there is also a robotics plant where industrial robots and hydraulic equipment are manufactured. - Offshore & Engineering Division - The Offshore & Engineering Division produces steel structures for onshore and offshore projects. In this shop, many steel structures for buildings, bridges, and plant facilities have been constructed. Examples of the division’s projects include the 63-Story Building, Lotte World, the LG Twin Building, and the L.A. City Police Department (42 stories). HHI has also completed major offshore facilities and drilling rigs all over the world by providing integrated services from design and construction to installation. In 1989, the successful completion and delivery of the 'Exxon jacket' ordered by a large oil company, Exxon USA, supplemented to HHI's exemplary reputation in the world market. The Exxon jacket was 375m high and weighed 30,000-tons. It was the first time that new technologies were utilized from the production stage to the shipment stage in making the jacket. I Kizomba FPSO Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has received an $800 million USD order for the Kizomba-A FPSO project (Floating, Production, Storage & Offloading facility) from the world's largest oil major, Exxon Mobil, on a turnkey basis. This project is the largest order HHI has ever received for an offshore FPSO project. The Kizomba field is located in deepwater block 15 off the Angola-shore. HHI has teamed up with Fluor Corporation and AMEC offshore to execute this massive project. The design work will be done in Fluor's Houston office with fabrication of the hull and topsides in Ulsan, Korea. The three-company team is anticipated to bring world-class project management and engineering of complex topsides together with the premier fabricator in the world. The FPSO order will have a stand-alone weight of 81,000-tons, 285 meters in length, 63 meters in width, and 32 meters in height. It will be able to store 2.2 million barrels of crude oil in its lower hull facilities, while processing 250,000 barrels of crude oil per day and accommodating 100 people in its living quarters. HHI has already begun the design phase, will enter into actual construction this year, and will install the unit in July 2004. - LNG Shop - This is the LNG shop where aluminum tanks for LNG carriers are manufactured. So far, HHI has delivered 10 LNG carriers to ship owners. One LNG carrier has a total capacity for 135,000 m3 of LNG. During transportation, liquefied natural gas is stored at ?163ºC and contained in 4 aluminum tanks. The price of one LNG carrier alone is about 200 million USD. (HHI is building five 138,000m3 LNG carriers ordered by Boony Gas Transport Co., Nigeria in 1999. HHI has built 3 LNG ships, measuring 288m in length, 48m in width, and 27m in depth, which was delivered in 2002. They had a capacity of 138,000 cubic meters. HHI also signed a contract for four LNG vessels with NLNG on DEC. 19, 2001.) The Moss-type LNG vessels will have a capacity of 141,000 cubic meters and will be delivered between 2004 and 2006. Two Moss-type LNG vessels ordered by Norwegian companies have a capacity of 137,000 cubic meters. HHI was determined to modify one of the two into Membrane-type LNG vessel after consultation with the owner. HHI will reinforce its role to lead the world's LNG vessel market as a company able to build both Moss-type and Membrane-type vessels simultaneously. - Naval Ship ? Since building Korea's first frigate, Ulsan class, in 1976, we have built 40 warships for domestic and international clients. Currently, we have completed the design of the Aegis destroyer and preparation for construction is underway In Nov. 2000, HHI teamed up with Germany's HDWand and was selected to build 3 submarines by the Ministry of Defense by 2009. Each 1,800ton-class submarine will be about 65m long, 6.3m wide and 13m high. They will have the ability to submerge to a depth of 400m and carry out under water operations for a maximum of two weeks at a time with 27 to 35 crewmembers. The diesel-powered submarines also have the AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) system. The price of one submarine is about 353 million USD. - Welfare - HHI has many assistance programs that benefit its employees. Approximately 16,000 apartments have been built near the company as employee housing. 7 recreational centers were also built, and play an important role in developing the surrounding community and enriching the quality of life. HHI also runs 10 schools including the Ulsan University.
