『Material Girl』은 1984년 발매되어 전 세계를

그야말로 '마돈나 신드롬'에 빠뜨렸던 전설의 명반(名盤)

〈Like a Virgin〉 에 수록된 또 다른 메가 히트 곡으로

빌 보드 Hot 100 차트 2위, 영국 차트 3위를 기록했고,

'마테리얼 걸' 이라는 별명은 이후 수십 년 간 그녀를

따라 다니게 해 준 1980년대 Dance Pop의 아이콘 같은

곡입니다.

'마릴린 먼로'의 1953년 영화《신사는 금발을 좋아해》를

오마주한 뮤직 비디오 로도 유명하죠.

낭만이나 사랑보다는 "차가운 현찰(Cold Hard Cash)"을

가진 남자가 최고라고 당당하게 외치는 이 노래는,

1980년대의 물질 만능 주의를 풍자(諷刺)하면서도 동시에

솔직한 욕망을 드러내는「Madonna」의 매력을 완벽하게

후렴 구가 압권(壓卷)이라고 할 수 있죠 과거의 여성

가수들이 주로 지고지순(至高至順)한 사랑이나 슬픈

이별을 노래했다면,「Madonna」는 달랐습니다.

"우리가 사는 세상은 결국 물질(돈)이 지배하는

세상이고, 난 그런 세상에 완벽하게 어울리는

물질적인 (속물적인) 여자야!"라고 뻔뻔할 정도로

솔직하게 외쳤죠.

이 노래는 가부장적(家父長的)이고 보수적이었던

사회 분위기를 발칵 뒤집어 놓으며,「Madonna」를

단숨에 시대의 아이콘으로 만들어 주었습니다.

그녀는 뮤직 비디오 촬영 현장에서 배우 'Sean Penn'을

만났고, 그해 8월에 결혼하여 큰 화제가 되기도 했습니다.
