Lisa has shared a thoughtful reflection following the recent “Follow the Energy” seminar.
I deeply appreciate her sincerity and the clarity of her understanding.
The essence of martial arts lies not merely in physical technique,
but in following the natural flow of Ki — the invisible principle that moves all things.
🥋 On the Fundamentals and the True Direction of Training
In every seminar and all online/offline guidance,
I emphasize one essential truth:
The foundation of martial arts depends on
personal effort, skill cultivated step by step,
and the aim of reaching the ultimate purpose of training —
a stronger, healthier, and more meaningful life.
The fundamentals serve as the bridge between
the visible world (physical movement), and
the invisible world (mental and spiritual cultivation)
And those fundamentals are what carry the practitioner to the very end.
Even the most knowledgeable scholar across East and West
cannot awaken a single true principle
without an open heart
and the willingness to experience it through the body.
🕊️ A Message from the Founder
As the founder of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo,
I want to state clearly that the core principles and fundamentals I teach today
are being presented to the world for the first time in the 21st century.
But this is not something that appeared overnight.
It is the result of
a lifetime of searching, practicing, refining, and deeply contemplating the essence of martial arts,
philosophy, healing, and human life itself.
On top of the accumulation of time
Only then did I realize it, but...
There is no end.
Even now, day by day, new...
It's just a transformation.
🚫 When Martial Arts Lose Their Roots
Without true fundamentals,
martial arts become trapped in superficial comparisons:
○size of the organization
○number of buildings
○scale of events
○outward displays of power or popularity
Such thinking often arises
when individuals seek personal benefit or privilege.
In the end,
the students are the ones who suffer,
sometimes realizing it only after many years have passed.
🌱 A Living Lineage — A Living Essence
This is why Lisa’s reflection brings me joy. Her writing displays humility, authenticity, and the will to stay connected to the living source.
“Follow the Energy”
is not a slogan —
it is the correct direction for our training and our lives.
I will continue to guide and support all of you in the United States,
so we may walk this path together
with clarity, purpose, and steady energy.
■ Below is Lisa’s original reflection
“Follow the Energy”: After the Seminar
The “Follow the Energy” seminar took place almost six weeks ago.
When Grandmaster Kim, Jeong
Seong invited reflections, I allowed time before responding.
Some experiences need movement
through the body and the mind before words can rise naturally. Energy does not settle on command—it
reveals itself when we are ready to follow it.
One image that kept returning to me was the feeling of forward-moving energy—like a long, extended
dadosae, the kind where you “go fishing.”
It is not simply sending the sword forward. The intention and
the Ki must lead first, then the body extends, and the sword naturally follows that energy.
We extend,
we wait,
and we feel the outcome of that movement.
Just as in general movements the sword follows the principles of the body, in Sim Hyung the Ki and intention extend first, and the body follows their path.
This reflects the natural order of energy flow.
Nature teaches this lesson constantly.
Water moves from high ground to low ground—not because it is
told to, but because that is its nature.
Energy flows forward.
Night moves into day.
Full becomes empty.
Empty becomes full again.
Cycles turn without pause.
Energy is always in motion.
Life itself calls for
movement.
Even when nothing appears to be happening, something is always occurring—visible or
invisible.
Nothing truly holds still.
Grandmaster Kim is not the moon—he is the finger pointing to the moon. He is a man with a method,
not an object of worship.
The direction matters more than the figure. The teaching points beyond itself.
A few years ago, I was speaking with a longtime Master who mockingly commented that Grandmaster
Kim’s headquarters and training place is a small cottage in the countryside of Korea.
He contrasted this
with his own monetary success—large buildings in the city, expensive cars, numerous dojangs, and
impressive physical performance. I listened quietly.
What I thought, though I did not say aloud, was this: this is exactly why, at this age and stage of my life,
I feel called to follow this path.
Nature strips away excess. It teaches humility, continuity, and longevity.
What lasts does not always announce itself loudly.
Holding these reflections, I made an intentional decision to speak with my students about forming the
JSKR Haedong Kumdo 501(c)(3).
This was not a logistical choice alone; it was an energetic one. I felt
strongly that if we were to continue legitimate training in this system, we needed living access to our
source.
The nonprofit was named JSKR Haedong Kumdo because my dojangs already operate as JSKR
Haedong Kumdo – Akron and JSKR Haedong Kumdo – Lorain.
Rather than restricting the organization to two locations, I intentionally left the city names out of the formal 501(c)(3) title. This was done so the organization could expand, grow, and continue to teach and learn wherever conditions allow. Structure, like training, must remain alive.
It is important to state clearly that this organization was not created to teach Haedong Kumdo broadly
or generically. It exists specifically for the continuing education, training, and implementation of
Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo, as founded by Grandmaster Kim, Jeong Seong, Chong Jae
Nim.
Style matters.
Method matters.
Lineage matters—not for ego,
but for correctness and clarity.
An honest effort in the teachings of this style is required. Years of experience in Haedong Kumdo do
not automatically point to the essence of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu if one does not humble oneself.
Without humility, technique remains surface-level and energy remains scattered.
While the guide is alive, why would we not walk the path with clarity?Lineage in martial arts is not abstract. It is not only preserved in books or photographs.
It is carried in energy, movement, correction, and presence. To train without access to that living current would be like studying a river from old maps instead of stepping into the water while it still flows.
Formation, like training, must move forward. Energy that stagnates fades. Energy that follows its
natural direction continues—quietly, steadily, and with purpose.
This, in itself, is “following the energy.”

“Follow the Energy”
Lisa
“Follow the Energy”
