Spring is quickly come and go quickly. Already I feel so hot. In the mountains, the flowers were in full bloom. The maritime news of the day is "No rush for LNG-ready vessel yet".
While shipowners are busy preparing for 'liquefied natural gas (LNG) -ready' and duel-fueled vessels as LNG is growing as eco-friendly fuel, it has been suggested that hasty preparation for the vessel could be rather a loss.
According to Lloyd's List, Ole Grone, Senior Vice-President of MAN Diesel & Turbo (MDT), noted during 'CMA Shipping 2015' Conference and Exhibition held in Connecticut, the US that shipowners can wait for lower costs and better technology related to 'LNG-ready vessel age'.
As international environmental regulations are tightened and gas price are falling, a growing number of owners have continuingly ordered LNG or dual-fueled vessels.
DNV GL estimated that 50 LNG-fueled vessels were in operation as of the end of September, 2014, while 69 vessels were on order. The data excluded LNG tankers and inland waterway vessels.
Some leading operators have made preparation to apply 'LNG-ready' specification to their very large crude carriers (VLCC). With this, the vessels are designed and built for easy future to use LNG as fuel.
However, some industry players express their concern about a lack of LNG bunker fuel supply chain as well as the high costs of manufacture of LNG tank for the vessels.
As for construcion of LNG-ready vessel, Mr. Ole Grone said "We advice them (shipowners) to do as little as possible. Some prepararions might be wasted efforts," and added, "It's best to take advantage of (later) technology and wait."
