1. Information Age Trap
Bronti Kelly's problems started so simply - his wallet was stolen. He reported the
theft to the police and thought nothing more of it. But soon he lost his job and then he
was turned away from every job he applied for over the next four years. He was given
all kinds of excuses, but he was never told the truth.
The real reason Mr. Kelly couldn't find a job was that the thief who stole his wallet,
later used the identity card that was inside the wallet. When the thief was arrested for
other crimes, he used Mr. Kelly's name. As a result, Mr. Kelly now has a criminal
record, which has spread across the computer databases that employers use to check
out potential employees.
Mr. Kelly's problems have been caused by computerization. His case illustrates the
growing threat to personal privacy as a result of easy access to background databases.
The personal information on millions of people - from bank account numbers to police
records - can now be purchased cheaply and easily over the Internet.
What can you do to protect yourself? whenever you give out your information,
remember that it could be passed easily onto others and used for purposes you never
intended. Therefore, be very careful about what information you give and who you give
it to.
Most people think that if they haven't done anything wrong, they've got nothing to
worry about. That's what Bronti Kelly thought. But now he's still having a hard time
finding work. Because his name has a criminal record, he finally decided to change it.
But he's not happy about it. "I like the name I was born with," he says. "I was happy
being Bronti Kelly."
2. The Flags of Midnight
On July 1st, 1997, 156 years of British rule in Hong Kong came to an end. At a few
seconds before midnight, a British military band sadly played "God Save the Queen" as
the British flag was slowly lowered for the last time. Ten seconds later, the red and
yellow flag of the People's Republic of China rose. It was a moment of deep emotion.
The richest British colony now belonged to China.
For Chinese in Hong Kong and around the world, it was the closing of what many
view as the most shameful chapter in China's history. But beyond the fireworks,
festivities and ceremonies, there was also a sense of uncertainty. What would the future
be like for the Pearl of the Orient? Would China keep its promise to preserve Hong
Kong's freedoms and its capitalist economy?
Hoping to calm these fears, Chinese President Jiang Zemin stated several times that
China would stay out of Hong Kong's affairs. Hong Kong's new leader, Tung
Chee-hwa, told the people: "Democracy will be the hallmark of a new era for Hong
Kong."
Clearly, if China's leaders fail to keep their promise, they could weaken benefits Hong
Kong gained as a british colony. With the right decisions, however, China has the
chance to be remembered as a great, modernizing power. And Hong Kong will continue
to lead the way.
3. The Life of Princess Diana
The marriage of Diana to Prince Charles in 1981 brought pageantry and renewal to
the British monarchy. After searching the world over, the prince had finally found a girl
good enough to be his princess. In seeing Diana marry the prince, the fairy-tale fantasy
of millions of people throughout the world was fulfilled. That story about the prince
arriving on his white horse was true after all.
Soon, however, the fairy tale fell apart. The world could see there was no love
between the royal couple. After a bitter divorce, Diana struggled to find new meaning in
her life. She turned to the media to get her views out and to let her personality be felt.
The world media became the avenue through which she expressed herself.
Diana was not just any celebrity, but the most photographed woman of our time. No
woman ever appeared on so many magazine covers around the world as did Diana.
What was her appeal? It was her freshness, her sensitivity, and her desire for marriage,
love and children. It was her glamour. Diana made the world fall in love with her
through her graceful movements and her style, getting out of cars, flashing her famous
smile, looking fantastic in her clothes. The world watched her evolve from a shy
English rose into a sophisticated glamour queen.
With deep compassion, Diana embraced many good causes, from AIDS to the refugees
in Bosnia to the horror of land mines. She possessed a special gift to touch people, a
gift that might will have increased in the years ahead.
Diana's death in a car crash while being chased through the streets of Paris by
paparazzi was tragedy that shook the entire world. It was not just the people of Britain
who had lost their princess. Everyone everywhere mourned the news of her passing.
Without Diana, the world suddenly felt a little emptier.
