Dialogue 9.1
Lee : (After receiving a boarding pass) Could you please check whether my bags have been
transferred right to this flight? Here are my baggage claim checks.
Agent : No problem! Let me check that for you. (Pause)Yes, it's done alright.
Lee : Thanks.
Agent : You're welcome.
Tips 9.1
1) baggage claim tag / check.
2) No problem!
또는 of course.
3) It's done alright / all right.
Lee : Excuse me. Has the flight 035 to Boston left already?
Agent : Yes, it has just left 5 minutes ago.
Lee ; Hey! I was so close!
Agent : Yes, I'm sorry.
Lee : Do you have another flight to Boston available tonight?
Agent : Sure, we do. Do you want me to book you on the next flight?
Lee : Yes, please.
Agent : It's flight UA 037, departing at 9 p.m.
Lee : What a relief!
Tips 9.2
1) It has just left 5 minutes ago.
3) I was so close!
I could have almost made it.(But, in fact I didn't make it.)

tomorrow morning.
Lee : who's going to pay my hotel bill tonight?
Agent : We'll take care of that, of course. We'll give you a coupon covering one night stay
in a hotel and a breakfast.
Lee : How do I get to the hotel?

Dialogue 9.4
Officer : Hi!
Lee : Good evening.
Officer : What's the purpose of your visit?
Lee : For pleasure.

'Freedom! That's what I'm here

friends are for.

Dialogue 9.6
Officer : Would you mind if I look into your bag?
Lee : No, not at all.
Officer : Well. You are carrying two cartons of cigarettes, but up to 200 cigarettes is
duty-free, you know?
Lee : It's for personal consumption only, sir.
Officer : All right, and may I ask what this is worth?
Lee : Those are gifts for my relatives. It's worth about 100 dollars a piece.
Officer : You're carrying three, and that's 200 dollars worth. 200 dollars is the duty-free
limit, so you have to pay duties for 100 dollars.
Tips 9.6
1) up to 200 cigarettes

Clerk : Could you fill out this form, please?
Lee : Sure. (Filling out a form) Here you are.
Clerk : Let me check whether I can trace your bag. (After working with the computer) Well,
your bag is now at Columbus, Ohio. I'll have it brought here, first thing in the morning, on
the next flight from Columbus. As soon as we have it here, we will deliver it to your hotel.
Is this the hotel you're staying tonight.
Lee : Yes. Is it door-to-door delivery?
Clerk : Yes, it is. Do you need a toiletry bag for tonight?

6) and so on
.....등등. and so forth 와 같은 표현.
"For here or to go?"
이렇게 따지면 for here와 to go는'격'이 맞지 않
다. 격을 같게 하여 to go 대신 for going out 정도로 표현해야 맞을 것 같은데, 원어민이 그렇게
Could I have a doggy bag, please? 또는 Could you put this into a doggy bag,
please?

Do you have a car to
trade-in? Would you like to trade your car in?
It's a trade-off between cost and quality.

Review 10
Lee : Good Evening.
Clerk : Hi! How can I help you?
Lee : What's the best way to get downtown?
Clerk May I ask where you are going to?
Lee : to the Marriott Hotel in Manhattan.
Clerk : You could take a taxi-cab, limousine bus or the subway.
Lee : Oh! Is a limousine bus to the hotel available?
Clerk : Yes, it makes stops at every major hotel (in) downtown.
Lee : How long does it take to get downtown?
Clerk : About 40 minutes, it depends on traffic, though.
Lee : What's the fare for the limousine bus?
Clerk : It's 12 dollars for one-way, 20 dollars for round-trip.
Lee : What's the fare for the taxi-cab?
Clerk : It's 40 dollars, just a ball-park figure.
Lee : How long does it take to get downtown by taxi?
Clerk : It gets you there much faster, in about 20 minutes.
Lee : I see. I'd better take the limousine.
Clerk : O.K. You need to buy a ticket for limousine bus. Would you like a one-way or round
trip?
Lee : One-way, please.
Clerk : It's 12 dollars.
Lee : Do you accept traveller's checks?
Clerk :Yes, we do.
Lee : Good. Here you are. It's a 20 dollar check.
Clerk : O.K. Here's your ticket and 8 dollars in change.
Lee : Thank you.
Chapter 11. Renting a Car
Key Expressions 11
What kind of car do you have in mind?
I'd like to rent a sub-compact car.
Will that be O.K. for you?
What's the rate per day?
It's 30 dollars per day plus mileage.
Insurance is extra.
You went over the line.
Do I have to pay an overcharge by the hour?
What's the drop-off charge?
You need to fill up the gas tank.
That's too much.
You need my credit card imprint.
What's the problem?
Dialogue 11.1
Lee : Hi, I'd like to rent a car.
Agent : What kind of car do you have in mind?
Lee : Small and gas-saving one, please.
Agent : O.K. We have a Ford Escort, sub-compact.
Lee : Is it a stick (-shift)?
Agent : No, it's automatic and 몬 무 air conditioner, too. How long would you like to rent it?
Lee : I'd like to use it for three days.
Tips 11.1
1) What kind of car do you have in mind?
What kind of car would you like to rent?
Dialogue 11.2
Agent : Hi. Can I help you, sir?
Lee : Yes. I'd like to rent a car, sub-compact one.
Agent : O.K. We have a Ford Escort. Will that be O.K. for you, sir?
Lee : I think it will.
Agent : May I have your driver's license and credit card, please?
Lee : Sure. Here are my Visa Card and an international driver's license.
Agent : How long would you like to use it?
Lee : Three days. I'll be returning it on May 5th.
Tips 11.2
Will that be O.K. for you? 여기서는 Would you like that? 또는
Would that work for you?

Ford : Fix or repair daily, Fiat : Fix it again, Tom.
Toylet!=toilet)
Dialogue 11.3
Lee : What's the rate per day?
Agent : It's 30 dollars a day plus mileage. We charge 20 cents every mile you drive over 200
miles.
Lee : What do you mean by that?
Agent : Our basic rate includes the first 200 miles. If you drive more than 200 miles. If you
drive more than 200 miles, then you're charged 20 cents for every mile you drive over 200.
Lee : Oh, I see. But I think I'll be driving a lot around here. Do you have one with unlimited
mileage?
Agent : Of course, we do. It's 45 dollars a day. If you are driving well over 200 miles, the
unlimited mileage one is more economical.
Lee : O.K. I'll take that, please. Is the insurance included?
Agent : No, sir Insurance is extra.
Lee : What kind of insurance should I buy?
Agent : You can buy insurance for full coverage, or just for liability.
Tips 11.3
1) What's the rate per day?
2) It's 30 dollars a day plus mileage.
3) well over
4) Insurance is extra.
5) buy insurance
6) liability

예를 들면 옛날 Elvis Presley가 부른 노래 중에 'He ain't nothing but a hound dog.'
이 있다. ain't의 사전적 의미는 am not, are not, is not, have not 또는 has not으로 그 자체에
not이 포함되어 있으므로 nothing but 대신 anything but으로 써야 맞다.
I don't have nothing.
I don't have anything.
Dialogue 11.4
Lee : I'd like to return the car downtown. What's the drop-off charge, then?
Agent : There's no drop-off charge. You can drop the car off at any one of our Avis offices
downtown. All you need is to just fill up the gas tank.
Tip 11.4
1) drop off.
2) fill up the gas tank
연료를 가득 채워 달라고 할 때 Fill it up, please. 또는 Fill'er up, please. 여기서 'er는
her(자동차를 여성 의인화)를 나타낸다.
Rent car
Dialogue 11.5
Lee : Do I have to pay an overcharge by the hour?
Agent : Yes. Up to 3 hours, you have to pay 10 dollars overcharge, and over 3 hours you
have to pay one full day's rate.
Lee : O.K. Are there any other extra charges?
Agent : When you return the car, the fuel tank should be full. If not, we charge you extra
for the fuel. It would be 2 dollars per gallon.
Lee : Wow! That's too much.
Agent : Yes. You can save money if you fill it up.
Tips 11.5
1) overcharge by the hour.
2) up to ~.
It's up to you.
3) That's too much.
It's gone too far. 또는 It's gone too much.
You've gone too far/much. You went over the line.
Dialogue 11.6
Agent : How would you like to pay?
Lee : Cash, please.
Agent : But, we need your credit card number as a deposit.
Lee : So, you need my credit card imprint anyway.
Agent : That's right. Of course, you can pay (in) cash when you return the car, if you'd
like.
Lee : I see. Here it is, my Visa Card.
Agent : Thank you. Just moment, please. (Moments later) Would you sign here, please? Now
you're all set. Here's your copy of the paper and a local area map. Just cross the street, you
will find a shuttle bus stop. Buses going to the parking lot come every 10 minutes. Have a
safe ride!
Tips 11.6
1) deposit
Deposit 2 dollars and 50 cents, please.
2) credit card imprint.
3) parking lot.
4) paper
5) Have a safe ride!
Drive safely.
Dialogue 11.7
Lee : Excuse me. I think I have a problem with my car.
Agent : What's the problem, sir?
Lee : There's a big scratch on the rear door.
Agent : Really? I didn't notice it when I checked the car this morning. Let me take a look.
Hmm.... yes, there is. What would you like to do, sir? If you are not happy with this, I'll get
you a new one.
Lee : Yes, please do so.
Tips 11.7
1) What's the problem? 또는 What's the matter?
Tires are
flat. 또는 I have flat tires.

You were speeding. May I see your driver's license, please?
Please, look at me.
I'm sorry. Please, give me a break this time.

Chapter 12. Making Hotel Reservations
Key Expressions 12
I'd like a single room for May 2nd through 5th.
What's your rate per night?
Does your rate include breakfast?
What's your initial, please?
Let me give your confirmation number.
We can guarantee your reservation by credit card.
We'll look forward to seeing you on May 2nd.
Dialogue 12.1
Receptionist : Holiday Inn. How may I help you?
Lee : I'd like to reserve a single room for May 2nd through 5th.
Receptionist : Just a moment, please. Sorry, we are sold out.
Tips 12.1
1) a single room
2) 체류기간을 표현할 때 for May 2nd through 5th와 같이 한다. for 대신 from을 쓰면 from
May 2nd to 5th 와 같이 to를 써야 하고, for 3 nights from / beginning May 2nd로 써도 된다.
3) We are sold out.
앞서 설명한 바와 같이 We're fully booked. We don't
have a vacancy.
Dialogue 12.2
Receptionist : Marriott, can I help you?
Lee : Hi! Do you have a single room available for 3 nights from May 2nd?
Receptionist : let me check. Yes, we do.
Lee : What's your rate per night?
Receptionist : 95 dollars plus tax per night.
Lee : Fine, I'll take it. Does your rate include breakfast?
Receptionist : No, sir. Could I ask your name, please?
Lee : Yes, last name is Lee, L-E-E.
Receptionist : What's your (first) initial, please?
Lee : C dash S.
Receptionist : Thank you, Mr. Lee. Let me give your confirmation number. It's M 2247. M,
as in Mary, and 2-2-4-7.
Tip 12.2
1) What's your rate per night / day?
하루에 얼마인가는 per night / day 또는 a
night / day로 하면 되고 Ho much ~로 물을 수도 있다.
2) 95 dollars plus tax.
Does your
rate include breakfast? 또는 Is breakfast included in your rate? Yes, it is for bed
and breakfast. B&B (Bed and
No, sir. But we
serve coffee and donuts for free. 또는 Free coffee and donuts are available in the morning at
the lobby.
4) What's your (first) initial?
이름(first name)을 물을 때 full name 대신 first name의 영문 첫자만을 물어보는 경우이다.
5) confirmation number.
Could I
have my confirmation number, please?
6)M, as in Mary.

Dialogue 12.3
Lee : Could I ask you a question, please?
Receptionist : Sure, go ahead.
Lee : I think I'll be checking in very late (at night) on May 2nd, as my flight arrives at JFK
at 11 p.m.
Receptionist : O.K. Would you like to guarantee your reservation for late arrival?
Lee : Yes, please.
Receptionist : We can guarantee your reservation by credit card. May I have your credit card
number, please?
Lee : Sure. Master Card 1234-5678-8765-4321.
Receptionist : Thank you. Mr. Lee. Your reservation is guaranteed for late arrival. Now,
you're all set. We'll look forward to seeing you on May 2nd. Bye.
Tips 12.3
1) Could I ask you a question?
I've got a question for you. 이때
question to you 라고 하지 않도록 주의한다.
2) guarantee your reservation for late arrival.
3) We'll look forward to seeing you on May 2nd.
We'll be expecting you
on May 2nd.

Dialogue 13.2
Clerk : Do you have a reservation (with us)?
Lee : No, I don't.
Clerk : Sorry, sir. We're fully booked through next week.
Lee : Really? Hmm....Could I ask ( you) a favor, please? Could you recommend any other
hotels nearby?
Clerk : Well.... You might try Holiday Inn. I can make a call for you.
Lee : Thanks, I really appreciate that.
Clerk : (Moments later) Sorry, they don't have a room available either.
Lee : I didn't think it's that difficult to find a room around here.
Clerk : You know, this is high season for tourists. So, I guess nearly all the hotels in town
are full. O.K. Here's your last chance. I'll call Red Roof Inn this time, and if they don't have
a room either, then you should try other hotels farther from here.
Tips 13.2
1) Could I ask (you) a favor?
Could you do me a favor?
2) Could you recommend any other hotels nearby?

Dialogue 13.3
Clerk : Good evening. How can I help you, sir?
Lee : Hi! I have a reservation under the name Lee, L-E-E. My confirmation numer is M

Lee : Yes
Clerk : How would you like to arrange payment?
Lee : In cash, please.

twelfth floor. Enjoy your stay (with us)!
Tips 13.3
1) reservation under the name Lee.
I have a
reservation from tonight, and my last name is Lee, L-E-E.
2) to arrange payment.
How would you like to settle your account /
bill?
3) Enjoy your stay (with us)!
I hope you enjoy your stay with us. Have a pleasant stay!
Dialogue 13.4
Clerk : Hi! May I help you?
Lee : Hi! I have a reservation under the name Lee, L-E-E.
Clerk : (Looking into card files) What are your initials, please?
Lee : C-S.
Clerk : (Moments later) Sorry, but I couldn't find your name on my reservation list. Do you
happen to have the confirmation number with you, sir?
Lee : Yes, I've got a copy of your confirmation number is b3456.
Clerk : All right, sir. There has been some mistakes, I guess. You have reserved a single
room for three nights beginning today. All of our single rooms are fully booked, and only a
junior suite is available at the moment.
Lee : Uh? I see a problem here. I'm afraid the junior suite would cost me a lot more.
Clerk : No, sir. We'll give you this junior suite at the same rate as a single, because we
made a mistake.
Lee : Really? That sounds great.
Tip 13.4
1) Do you happen to have the confirmation number?
2) I see a problem here.

3) at the same rate as~

Dialogue 13.5
Clerk : Would you like a smoking room or non?
Lee : Non-smoking, please. By the way, do you have room with a lake view available?
Clerk : Yes, We do. But you have to pay 10 dollars extra for a room with a good view.

Tips 13.5
1) By the way
2) Room with a good view

앞서 설명한 바와 같이 a lot 대신 too much를 써도 된다.
Dialogue 13.6
Lee : Excuse me. I'm Lee in room 1237. I'd like to (extend my) stay for two more nights.
Do you have rooms available?
Clerk : Let me check it for you Mr. Lee. You're supposed to check out on May 5th, now
you'd like to check out on May 7th. Is that right, sir?
Lee : Yes, that's correct.
Clerk : O.K. We have a room available for you, but room 1237 is already booked from May
5th. So, you have to move to another room. It's room 1123. Would that be all right for you,
Mr. Lee?
Lee : No problem. Is that the same rate?
Clerk : Yes. It's the same rate as the one you're in now. Also, we can move your things to
your new room on May 5th.
Lee : That would be good. Thank you.
Tips 13.6
1) extend my stay
I'd like
to stay two more nights.
2) supposed to
3) a room you're in now.
Excuse me. I'm supposed to check out on May 5th,
but could I check out one day earlier on May 4th?
Dialogue 13.7
Clerk : Good evening. May I help you, sir?
Lee : Do you have rooms available for two for 3 nights?
clerk : Do you have reservations with us?
Lee : No, we don't.
Clerk : O.K. Let me check. (After working on terminals) Sorry, we only have one room left
Lee : Can I share the room with my friend, then?
Clerk : Yes, you can. It's 75 dollars plus 10 dollars per extra person per night.
Lee ; That will be fine.
Tips 13.7
1) one room left
2) share the room

G : General Audience,
PG : Parental Guidance Suggested, R : Restricted, X : Not rated 우리식으로 번역한다면 G는
pornography(도색영화)로 우리나라에서는 아예 상영 금지에 해당된다.
리), Violence(폭력), Nudity(번은 장면) 등이 얼마나 있는가이다.
Dialogue 13.8
Clerk : May I have your credit card, please?
Lee : Certainly, here you are.
Clerk : O.K. Here's your credit card back, and your key. Do you know how to use it?
Lee : Well, I'm not 100 percent sure.
Clerk : All right. insert this card key in the door, and a green light will appear then you
open the door.
Lee : O.K.
Clerk : Do you need a bellhop?
Lee : No, I have only one bag. I think I can manage.
Tips 13.8
1) Here's your credit card back.
2) I'm not 100 percent sure.
I'm not so sure.

Do you need some help with your bags?
4) I can manage.
Dialogue 13.9
Clerk : Would you like a newspaper?
Lee : Yes, Financial Times, please.
Clerk : Would you like a morning call?
Lee : Yes, 6:30 (tomorrow morning), please.
Clerk : All right, Mr. Lee. Have a nice stay!
Tips 13.9
morning call 또는 wake-up call. Could
you give me a morning / wake-up call at 6, please? Could you give me a ring at 6, please?
Could you wake me up at 6, please?

Chapter 14. In a Hotel Room
Key Expressions 14
There's a problem with my room.
I'll send someone right up.
How can i call Seoul, Korea, please?
Would you like an operator-assisted call?
Here's what you should do.
I'm locked out.
May I see your picture I.D., please?
Do you have laundry service in the hotel?
I'd like to have my jacket dry-cleaned and my pants ironed.
When could I have them back?
Let me make a note of it.
We'll have it delivered to your room at 6 a.m.
We'll get it to you.
Dialogue 14.1
Front Desk : Front desk. What can I do for you, sir?
Lee : Hi. There's a problem with my room.
Front Desk : What's the problem, sir?
Lee : Well, the air conditioner isn't working.
Front Desk : Oh, no. I'm very sorry. I'll send someone right up.
Tips 14.1
1) There's a problem with my room.
I have a complaint
about my room. 또는 I'm not happy with my room으로 써도 좋다.
2) air conditioner isn't working.
고장일 때 out of order 라는 표현은 회화에서는 거의 쓰이지 않고, isn't working을 주로 쓴다.
다만 elevator나 TV가 고장일 때, 쪽지로 표시해 놓을 때는 out of order 라고 쓴다.
3) right up.
Dialogue 14.2
Operator : Good evening. May I help you?
Lee : How can I call Seoul, Korea, please?
Operator : Would you like direct dialing or an operator-assisted call?
Lee :Direct dialing, please.
Operator : O.K. Here's what you should do. First dial 9, then you'll hear the tone, and then
dial 0-1-1 and then the country code, the city code and the number.
Lee : I see. Would you tell me the country code for Korea?
Operator : It's 82, sir.
Tips 14.2
1) How can / do I call Seoul, Korea?
How can I make / place a call to Seoul,
Korea?
2) direct dialing.
3) an operator-assisted call.
I'd like to call Seoul, Korea collect.나 I'd like to make a
collect call to Seoul, Korea. A collect call to Seoul, Korea, please.
된다.
4) Here's what you should do.
5) tone

Lee : Last name is Lee, L-E-E, and C and S are my initials.
Clerk : O.K. Mr. Lee. I'll get you a spare key. Just a second, please.
Lee : Thanks.
Tips 14.3
1) I'm locked out
I locked myself out.
2) a picture / photo I.D.
Dialogue 14.4
Front Desk : Front desk. May I help you?
Lee : Yes, do you have laundry service in the hotel?

Front Desk : It's one-day service. You could have them back by 6 p.m. tomorrow.
Tips 14.4

4) have them back
돌려받다. get them back도 같은 의미.
Dialogue 14.5
Room Service : Good evening. Room service. May I help you?
Lee : Hi. I'd like to order breakfast for tomorrow (morning).
Room Service : Sure. What time would you like to have it?
Lee : At 6 a.m., please.

morning.
Lee : Thank you.
Tips 14.5

Lee : I'd like to order breakfast for tomorrow, please.
Room Service : Would you please fill out the order card in your room and put it on the
outside door handle ?
Lee : By what time do I have4 to do that?
Room Service : You'll be fine, if you do that by midnight. Our housekeeper will collect it
around 1 a.m. in the morning.
'You keep me hanging on.'
3) breakfast for tomorrow (morning)
4) make a note of it
기록해 두다. take a note로도 쓴다.
5) have it delivered to your room
이 표현 대신 get it to you 혹은 have it to you로 쓸 수 있다.

It's going, going and gone!"
He's been really hot during the last 5
games.
