The audition in your major performance area is the most important factor in determining whether or not you will be accepted as a music major. It will normally last about ten minutes. The audition committee consists of faculty members from your area of concentration. An accompanist is not necessary, although you may wish to bring one. These guidelines are intended for entering freshmen. Transfer or advanced students should consider these suggestions as minimal expectations.
BRASS AND WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS
Students should prepare one solo and/or two contrasting etudes that best represent their performance level. They may be asked to perform major scales and to sight-read passages chosen to display their technical capabilities.
PERCUSSION
Students should be prepared to demonstrate proficiency in at least one major area of percussion (snare drum, mallet instruments, or timpani). Instruments for the audition will be provided by Baylor University.
STRINGS
Students should prepare three selections that are contrasting in style and tempo and best demonstrate the player's abilities. Two movements from the same composition are acceptable. One of the selections may be an etude.
VOICE
Incoming freshman should prepare 2 songs of contrasting styles in English or a foreign language. The audition committee may call for either or both. Transfer Students should prepare three songs or arias representing differing styles and periods; one of these selections must be in a foreign language. The repertoire should represent the applicant's voice growth and progress to date. The applicant should bring a representative list of vocal repertoire previously studied.
PIANO
Students should be prepared to perform the following from memory: (1) major and minor scales and arpeggios in four octaves; (2) an Invention or Prelude and Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach, or an equivalent work from the same period; (3) one movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven, or an equivalent work from the same period; (4) an additional composition of their own choice from the 19th or 20th century.
ORGAN
Students who have not previously studied organ and wish to begin organ study at Baylor should plan to audition on piano to indicate keyboard skills essential to organ study. Organ majors should be prepared to perform the following:
(1) one of the Eight Short Preludes and Fugues by J. S. Bach;
(2) one Chorale Prelude from the Orgelbhlein of J. S. Bach, or a comparable work from the same period;
(3) one composition by a composer from the 19th or 20th century.
THEORY, COMPOSITION, HISTORY AND LITERATURE, CHURCH MUSIC
Students intending to major in one of these areas should request an interview with the appropriate faculty. They must audition in a performance area since all prospective music majors must audition on an applied instrument or voice. Composition majors should submit representative scores and, when available, tape recordings to the Director of Academic Studies Division at least one week prior to their audition. Should you have questions, please contact the appropriate faculty member at (254) 710-1161.
