SLANG
Slang is a non standard vocabulary of a given culture. It is as much part of American life as apple pie.
Since slang words are becoming more popular in today's culture, it's a good idea to become familiar
with some of the popular phrases being used.
Does anyone else laugh at the jokes in American movies while you scratch your head in confusion?
Well, take comfort in the fact that slang is difficult to understand for older Americans as it is for you.
Let's face it. American slang is full of words that don't do much but fill space. For instance, oh, hey,
well, uh, um, and like, are basically meaningless. However, all of them can change the rhythm of
a sentence and in this and other ways, they do affect the feel of a sentence.
If you put the time into it, you might find that learning slang will help improve your spoken and
written English.
It may be one of the most essential aspects of learning the language as well as the most helpful,
in terms of both social interactions and school assignments. It's next to impossible to talk to Americans
without learning basic slang. Remember to be careful though because some slang is not appropriate
for all situations, and maybe offensive to some. If you do not understand a word or phrase, ask what
it means and how it is used because some slang words take on new meanings and new words are
adopted, compiling these words is an ongoing tasks.
