▣ Six at the Top : Entering a cave. Three uninvited guests arrive.
Treating them with respect ultimately brings good fortune.
[Explanation]
[Six at the Top] goes(or flees) into a cave, where three uninvited guests will arrive.
Maintaining a respectful attitude throughout will ultimately bring good fortune.
[Commentary]
The culmination extreme of waiting.
Even through one fled unable to wait further and retreated into a cave
Entering a cave],
One receives help from unexpected people
Three uninvited guests arrive].
If one waits with a humble heart and accords with the world
Treating them with respect],
Even if the podition is beyond one's capacity to handle, waiting will ultimately
prove fruitful[終吉,종길 - Ultimately good fortune].
'Entering a cave(入于穴,입우혈)' refers to hiding in a hold at the topmost line
of the Kan (坎,감 - Water) trigram to escape chaos,
And if '速(속, Su)' is taken to mean 'to invite', then 'Ulinvited guests (不速之客,불속지객)'
refers to 'unexpected visitors'.
Wang Bi viewed that because [Six at the top] consistently maintained a respectful
attitude without acting superior, helpers came to assist.
"At the top of the hexagram, no one blocks the way, and instead Line 3 respdnds and helps.
The reason the lower Yang 3 wqited without advancing was to wait for the hardship to end.
Once the hardship passes, they come on their own even without an invitation.
Since the top position lacks official status, behaving with respect led to ultimate
good fortune(終吉,종길)."
Confucius commented on[Six at the top], interpreting it as referring to those whovisited
King Wen when he was a feudal lord rather than on the king's throne in Line 5.
"Even if three uninvited guests arrive, receiving them with an upright and respectful
attituude will ultimately bring good fortune.
Uninvited guests arrive; treating them with respect ultimately brings good fortune]' means:
Altuough the position itself is not entirely proper for receiving guests,
Because respect was never relaxed, no great mistake or loss occurred [
Though not in a proper position, there is no great loss]."
The reference to 'an improper position [雖不當位,수부당위]' here is likely grounded
in the historical facts mentioned abovve.
This applies to the case where Hexagram 5(需卦,수괘 - Xu/Waiting) transitions into
Historically, after King Wen was released from Yuli Prison,
figures such as Jiang Ziya(Jiang Taigong), San Yisheng and Hong Yao―
These three ministers becoming King Wen's close advisors is viewed as the real-world
instance of the 'Three Uninvited Guests(不速之客 三人,불속지객 삼인).'
Zhixu's Buddhist commentary offers a similar explanation:
"As one flows together with the world [還來同流,환래동유] to widely save all living beings
Even if some of those beings are ignorant and act disrespectfully,
When connections with uninvited friends [不請之友,불청지우] arrive unexpectedly,
no great loss will occurr."
Even if the world does not recognize you, someone who will help you will surely appear.
The one who appears is none other than Heaven, Earth, and oneself.
When one achieves the level of spiritual cultivation to hold such fortitude,
great fortune and blessings from noble people naturally arrive.
If one pushes forward with the sheer guts to look at the Buddha statue in a hall and demand,
"Hey, can you really do this to me?"―
Heaven helps those who help themselves.
Here, the 'Three Uninvited Guests(不速之客 三人,불속지객 삼인)' also symbolize the realm
of cultivation one has attained inside the cave.
In other worlds, Confucianism(儒道,유도 - seeing reality and the future),
Buddhism(佛道,불도 - seeing the afterlife),
And Taoism(仙道,선도 - preserving health) form the three realms attained through cultivation.
Hence, Asan regarded the 'Three Uninvited Guests(不速之客 三人(불속지객 삼인)' as
'a person who has reached the pinnacle of mastering the three paths of Confucianism,
Buddhism, and Taoism.'
In conclusion, Hexagram Xu(需卦,수괘 - Waiting) teaches us to wait with firm faith
that the right time will come.
And to throughly prepare the 'three key's capable of opening up the world
when that time arrives.
During the [Inital Nine] stage, even when going out into the distant suburbs,
one must grit their teeth and prepare for the far future,
During the[Nine in the Second Position] stage,
on the sandy beach(where water appears if you dig deep enough),
During the [Nine in the Third Position] stage, even in the mud.
During the [Six in the Fourth Position] stage, even while vomiting blood,
one mustprepare for that future by securing at least 'therr keys'.
During the [Nine in the Fifth Position] stage,
even if one lives like a scoundrel/wastrel and eats the bread of idleness,
one must nurture at leats 'three' capable individuals,
Meaning that only by securing these true 'three keys' can one put them to essential
use when the time comes.
