On the way to school
By D.J. YOON
All my friends,
Leaving for the city one by one
Now I walk along the riverbank alone
The road to school
This morning
A magpie I found
Sitting on the top of a cottonwood
caw caw
I wonder if it is crying lonely
With no friends just feeling like me
caw caw
The magpie’s lonesome cry
Hearing by myself
Now I walk along the riverbank alone
The road to school
Appreciation Review 感想
What if your friends, who used to play together, have now left for the city one by one and you have to walk to school along the riverbank alone?
Then, how lonely it would be! How empty it would be!
That loneliness or emptiness comes to me so heavily and deeply.
Then, the poet catches a sound from somewhere: the sound of a magpie caw caw.
Now he wonders why the magpie is crying alone at the top of a cottonwood, wondering again if it is because it feels lonely with no friends, just like him?
As such, the magpie's cry becomes the poet’s soon.
And the poet thinks that it might be a cry coming from loneliness.
Maybe the magpie misses his old friends just as he does.
Misery loves company.
Fellow sufferers pity one another.
Grief is best pleased with grief’s company.
