A hugely important article about the role Ernie Cefalu played
in the evolution of the logo,
which not incidentally also supports my longheld contention that
Jagger and not John Pasche should be credited as lead designer...
Here's apparently the sequence of events:
1) Jagger shops around a picture of the Hindu goddess Kali,
saying he wants a logo based on her lips and tongue (as well as his own).
2) Marshall Chess takes this idea to Concept Packaging and Ernie Cefalu
while Jagger takes it to the Royal College of Art and John Pasche.
3) Cefalu works with Chess to refine his original drawing while Pasche
does the same with Jagger.
Here are the results (similar enough to indicate
that both teams were working from the same pic of Kali):
4) BOTH versions are used,
Pasche/Jagger's for the inside sleeve of Sticky Fingers, and
Cefalu/Chess's for all merchandise associated with the album.
5) Most importantly,
the famous logo we all love is a COMBINATION of the two.
What we still don't know is who put the pencil to paper
to create the combination,
but whoever it was I think we can be sure it was at Jagger's request.
Ernie Cefalu
John Pasche
