영국 기어박스 레코즈(GEARBOX RECORDS) 수입 음반 안내

기어박스 레코즈는 2010년 런던에서 엔지니어이자 재즈 애호가인 대럴 샤인만이 설립한 독립 레이블입니다. 대표가 블루노트 컬렉터이자 아날로그 애호가답게 과거의 재즈 음원을 바이닐 LP로 발매하는데 집중하고 있습니다. 주요 타이틀은 1950~’70년대 영국 재즈의 황금기를 구가했던 터비 헤이즈(Tubby Hayes), 조 해리엇(Joe Harriott), 로니 스콧(Ronnie Scott)과 마이클 개릭(Michael Garrick)의 미발표 레코딩 등이며 대부분 영국 BBC의 아카이브를 주 음원으로 삼고 있습니다.

2013년부터 발표된 음반은 기어박스의 아날로그 전용 스튜디오에서 마스터링과 커팅 작업을 거친 음반들이며 모든 바이닐(싱글부터 LP까지)은 독일의 옵티멀 프레스에서 제작합니다. (자타공인 유럽 최고의 바이닐 프레스 공장이라 할 옵티멀 프레스는 비틀즈의 모노/스테레오 박스세트와 퀸의 박스 세트 등을 제작한 곳이기도 합니다)

최근 기어박스는 과거 음반의 복각에만 머무르지 않고 동시대의 수준 있는 재즈뮤지션과 타 장르 뮤지션을 발굴, 음반을 제작하여 선보이고 있습니다. 대표적인 뮤지션으로는 영국의 각종 재즈 어워즈를 휩쓸고 있는 빙커 앤 모제스(Binker & Moses)와 내쉬빌 출신 포크트리오 애플우드 로드(Applewood Road)가 있습니다. 이들의 데뷔 앨범은 높은 음악성으로 주목받을 뿐만 아니라 고품질의 아날로그 사운드를 담고 있어 현지의 오디오파일에게도 사랑 받고 있습니다.

이번에 최초 국내 배급되는 음반은 (2016년 6월 기준) 기어박스에서 발매한 거의 모든 타이틀이며 이후 발매되는 새로운 음반들도 꾸준히 공개할 예정입니다. 공급가 또한 유럽, 북미와 차이가 없는, 합리적인 가격에 맞추려 노력하였으니 이번 기회를 놓치지 마시구요. 많은 관심과 주문 부탁드립니다.

This previously unheard recording of the 1612 Overture demonstrating the brilliance of Ronnie Scott was captured on 19th October 1963 at the original Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club - “The Old Place” - at 39, Gerrard Street, Soho. It was recorded with Ronnie’s permission by Les Tomkins using a Ferrograph tape recorder running at 3 3/4 ups and with Grampian ribbon microphones. This is a limited edition release of 500 copies, each individually numbered. During the Spring of 2015 The James Taylor Quartet played a sold out six show run at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Every night’s performance was recorded, the standout set being the late show on Friday 25th March. By this time any initial ‘red light fever’ had long dissipated and the musicians were fully settled in, performing at their best and concentrating on capturing the special relationship between the band and the Ronnie Scott’s audience. The desire to return to a stripped-down approach means the band pare everything down to the essence. There were no horns or percussion, just James Taylor on Hammond C3, guitarist Mark Cox, bassist Andrew McKinney and drummer Pat Illingworth, a line-up now solid for over three years. There was no set list - the band don't use them - they just watch the audience, see how the music connects and take it from there. The songs that made the final cut are four James Taylor originals and four from the source - Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Joe Sample and Gene Ammons. Bumpin’ On Frith Street is a tip of the hat to Soho, the home of Ronnie Scott’s and ground zero of UK Jazz music. If you can’t get to Soho this record may just be the closest thing to being there. Originally meeting through double bassist/educator Gary Crosby’s Tomorrow’s Warriors jazz development programme, they have played together in various large and small format groups including recording and touring extensively as members of Zara McFarlane’s band. Dem Ones is their debut recording as a duo, and has its roots in experiments between soundchecks and gigs while on the road with McFarlane. Over time these initial ideas and jams have become templates for improvisation, and with their echoes of late period Coltrane and Charles Lloyd, are as listenable and memorable as they are full of invention, passion and surprise. Applewood Road is Emily Barker, Amber Rubarth and Amy Speace. In September 2014, three songwriters met for the first time in a cafe in East Nashville. By the next morning they had put the finishing touches to their first song, Applewood Road, which they recorded live to tape at Nashville’s all analogue studio, Welcome to 1979. The song’s nostalgic air, along with the clear, sparse arrangement of three vocals accompanied by double bass, drew immediate positive response, and they decided to expand the idea into a full album. Six months later, they reconvened to write, rehearse and record songs for the self-titled album Applewood Road. In July 1973 Back Door were on a major high having just finished recording their second album for Warner Brothers at Electric Lady Studios in New York. This BBC Radio ‘In Concert’ programme was broadcast immediately on their return to the UK and is now released for the first time. Colin Hodgkinson, Ron Aspery and Tony Hicks were virtuoso musicians intent on taking the blues in a whole new direction, and were championed by DJs and tastemakers of the day including Charles Shaar Murray and Alexis Korner who hosted this performance. On 12th March 1962 The Live New Departures Jazz Poetry Septet - featuring some of the UK’ s finest modern jazz musicians together with poets Pete Brown (co-writer/Cream) and Michael Horovitz (Britain’s Beat Laureate) - performed a historic experimental gig at the SCR Students’ Building on the Southampton University Campus. The evening featured post-bop jazz, poetry, jazzpoems and solo and exchange sound-poetry, as well as performances of the most ambitious work the Septet developed, Brown and Horovitz’s ‘Blues For The Hitchhiking Dead’. The magical events of that night were captured on a reel-to-reel tape recorder by the artists’ friend Victor Schonfield. To celebrate Record Store Day they are now released for the first time as a double 180gm vinyl individually numbered box set with a deluxe full size booklet containing photos, reminiscences, essays and memorabilia. Michael Horovitz brings his Jazz-Folk-Rock-Poetry SuperJam movement forward to the present day. On this 2013 studio recording of Bankbusted Nuclear Detergent Blues, an effervescent improvisatory poem-sequence which he wrote for Paul Weller, he is accompanied by three of the UK’s most popular musicians Weller himself, Graham Coxon & Damon Albarn. The record was recorded at Weller’s Black Barn Studio and Albarn’s Studio 13, and mixed at Studio 13, and originally released for Record Store Day 2013 alongside the accompanying Gearbox Records releases ‘Ballade Of The Nocturnal Commune’ (Jazz Poetry SuperJam #2) and the 2 LP box set ‘Blues For The Hitchhiking Dead’ (Jazz Poetry SuperJam #1). Paul Weller found that: "...It was my absolute pleasure to work in these recordings with Michael. Damon and Graham.
