John Lee
Written By Nathaniel Hawthorne
Publisher Sisa
Summary: Hester Prynne got married with one old scholar named Roger Chillingworth. She went to America ahead of his husband because her husband was captured by native Americans for some months. While waiting for her husband, she slept with other guy who was a reverend in Puritan church. Then Hester got pregnant and she bore a girl named Pearl.
When Chiilingworth came to where his wife was, he saw his wife with a baby and standing before a lot of people being condenmed for adultery. She was sentenced for staying in prison for some days and wearing the scarlet letter until she dies with A which symbolizes adultery. Then he just went away and told his wife that his identity should not be revealed. Chillingworth wanted to revenge to the reverend. So he continuously sought the opportunities for killing the reverend but it was not easy and he wanted to make a perfect revenge. One day, Hester Prynne and the reverend planned to escape after the reverend's sermon in a feast but the reverend decided to confess his sin which he slept with Hester who got already married. After he confessed his sin in front of many people, he died. Then Chillingworth got depressed because the man who was supposed to be killed by him died. However, he also died after the death of the reverend.
For the remainders, Hester and Pearl disappeared and later Hester appeared alone with the scarlet letter and helped other people and died also.
Impression: This book made me think a lot about adultery and revenge. Adultery is one of the wicked sins which God detests. I have heard and seen some dramas and movies which tell about adultery and divorce. Now sleeping with other women before marriage is just kind of duty. People call a man who never sleeps with another woman before marriage as stupid or unable to be attractive. However, Christians should not commit that kind of sin. It's really hard to live as a Christian in this world because of many obstacles. Maybe I have to be alaramed and armed with God's word so that I would fight against some temptations.
For me, I always revenge to others. If a man hits me, I try to do something to him for a revenge by doing even just a small little thing such as teasing or saying something that is somehow critical to the man. Since I read the Bible, I have noticed that I should not take a revenge to others because God said that I should love my neighbors and even my enemies.
Revenging became my habit which I can't correct well but from now on I will try not to revenge because as I read in the book, the consequence of plotting a revenge is very nothing and just death only. So I realized that it's really better to love others than revenging to others.
첫댓글 우리가 몸과 마음을 지킬 수 없기에 기도와 말씀 뿐이란다...
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
[Philippians 4; 6-7]
I love you, my son!
