Making elegant Seoul

 How are you, everybody?

I am very glad to talk about future and hope of our capital, Seoul, with you. 

Did you ever seen before the letters, "New York, Paris, London", written in the wrapping

paper of oversea's famous cosmetics or brand-name clothes?

 In other words, three cities of global village can be "New York, Paris, London".

I think that Seoul must be listed in the roll of global cities with three cities,

just like “Seoul, New York, Paris, London".

Seoul has a sufficient qualification for it because we held Olympic, WorldCup and

G20 summit successfully. 

  I will talk about the way that Seoul can be a global high-quality city.

Firstly, we have to make "Seoul that cosmopolitans want to come".

How can we make people come to Seoul? 

Firstly, it needs attractions. So to speak, it needs Seoul's own culture.

In recent years, Seoul has invested many costs and ideas for design the city. 

Various festivals were held, the street was designed and the Han River was

designed newly, so Seoul becomes pleasant. 

And the visitors of Seoul must be able to eat food deliciously. 

As the food culture of Seoul, there are many places where are collected by various

famous-restaurants. 

People can eat cheap and delicious food as much as we like. 

Also, we must communication easier.

Government and families have invested in English education so much.

As the result, there are many people who can speak English well.

It's good that there is public announcement in subways and buses, in English,

Chinese and Japanese.

I think that it has to be expanded to not only Seoul but also all cities.

Secondly, Seoul has to be clean and eco-friendly.

While Seoul has campaigned for clean restroom and washed down the street

continuously for reducing find dust, its air environment has been improved so much. 

When you came to Incheon Airport after overseas travel, how about

the first impression of Korea? 

Did you feel inconvenience because of diesel engine's exhaust

and smokers' tobacco smoke in the limousine bus stop of Incheon airport? 

I think that fuel of buses coming in and out of Incheon airport must be

changed to clean fuel firstly, for promoting tourist industry of Korea

including Seoul and improving national image because international airport is

the first impression of the country.

Thirdly, Seoul's strengths should be strengthened.

As we know, Seoul's public transportation is very convenient.

Seoul that people can go anywhere by subway, bus and taxi without any car

or rental car is very convenient city which is difficult to be found in this global village. 

There are mountains and rivers in Seoul and its feeling is different by seasons.

So many foreigners like Seoul.  

Is there anybody who rode cruise ship of Bangkok's "Chao Phraya"?

I think that Han River is much more pure and beautiful than "Chao Phraya" of muddy water.

But, how about that place? 

There are many tourists excessively in Bangkok, aren't there?

We also can make Seoul like that. 

If we strengthen Seoul's strengths sufficiently, we can do that. 

 Finally, I want to talk about the subject of 

'how do we must to do?', when making good Seoul like that. 

First of all, we have to let cosmopolitans know about Seoul.

For letting others know about something, the symbol is necessary.

People can recall Statue of Liberty for New York, Eiffel Tower for Paris,

Opera House for Sydney and Merlion for Singapore.

We have to create symbol that foreigners can recall Seoul.

We should publicize and advertise Seoul positively all over the wold. 

And we must lower the price. 

By giving benefit of tax system to hotel and restaurant, we must lower the price that

foreigners stay in Seoul. 

In case of foreign countries including Australia, the government gives a certain grant

per a tourist if travel agency brings foreign tourists. 

The hotel's room charge can be discounted for tourists.

We have to give an opportunity that citizen participate

in the work increasing tourism demand.

Calgary city in Canada, "Stampede Festival" is held in every July.

In the morning of the festival day, citizen do volunteer work to divide breakfast

to foreign tourists for free on the street. 

The government and citizen make the luxury festival together. 

How can be better if becoming "high-quality Seoul" like that?

Many tourists will come to Seoul. 

People coming to Seoul will spend money. 

And then, jobs will be increased and income will be also increased. 

Everybody, let's make highly-qualified and characterful Seoul!

제가 오늘 여러분과 함께 우리 수도 서울의 미래와 희망을 이야기할 수 있어서 무척 기쁩니다.

외국의 유명한 화장품이나 명품의류의 포장지에 “뉴욕, 파리, 런던”이라고 쓰인 것을

보신 적이 있으신지요.

말하자면 지구촌의 3대 도시가 바로 “뉴욕, 파리, 런던”이라는 의미로 생각할 수 있습니다.

저는 이 세 도시와 더불어 서울도 세계적인 도시의 명부에

그 이름을 올려야 한다고 생각합니다. “서울, 뉴욕, 파리, 런던” 이렇게 말이죠.

서울은 충분히 그 자격이 있습니다.

올림픽, 월드컵, G20회의를 성공적으로 치른 서울이기 때문입니다.

  서울이 세계적인 명품도시가 되기 위한 이야기를 해보겠습니다.

첫째로 “세계인이 와 보고 싶은 서울”을 만들어야 합니다.

사람들을 서울로 오게 하려면 어떻게 해야 할까요?

우선 볼거리가 있어야 하겠죠.

말하자면 서울만이 보여 줄 수 있는 문화가 있어야 합니다.

요 몇 년 사이에 서울은 도시를 디자인하는 데 많은 비용과 아이디어를

투자했습니다.

다양한 축제가 열리고, 길거리를 디자인 하고, 한강을 새롭게 탄생시켜

그야말로 재미있는 서울로 변모했습니다.

그리고 서울을 찾은 손님들이 맛있게 먹을 수 있어야 하겠습니다.

서울의 음식문화는 다양한 맛집이 모여있는 곳이 많습니다.

값싸고 맛있는 음식을 마음껏 먹을 수 있습니다.

또한 언어가 통해야 하겠습니다.

그동안 정부와 가정에서 영어 교육에 많은 투자를 한 결과로 영어 잘하는

시민들이 많아졌습니다.

지하철과 버스에서 영어, 중국어, 일본어로 안내방송을 하고 있는 것은

좋은 일이라고 하겠습니다.

서울뿐만 아니라 모든 도시로 확대해야한다고 생각합니다.

둘째로 깨끗하고 친환경적인 서울이 되어야합니다.

그동안 서울은 깨끗한 화장실 캠페인과 미세먼지를 줄이기 위해 도로의

물청소를 계속하면서 대기환경이 많이 개선되었습니다.

여러분은 외국 여행을 마치고 서울인천공항으로 돌아오면서 우리나라의 첫인상을

어떻게 느끼셨습니까?

혹시 인천공항 리무진 버스 승강장에서 디젤엔진의 매연과 흡연자들의 담배연기에

불쾌함은 느끼신 적은 없으십니까?

저는 서울을 비롯한 우리나라의 관광산업 육성과 국가 이미지 개선을 위해서

인천공항을 드나드는 버스의 연료를 청정연료로 바꾸는 일을 우선적으로

서둘러야 한다고 생각합니다.

국제공항은 그 나라의 첫인상이기 때문입니다.

셋째로 서울의 장점을 살리는 도시가 되어야 합니다.

우리 모두 알고있는 것처럼 서울은 대중교통이 아주 편리한 도시입니다.

자가용이나 렌터카 없이도 전철, 버스, 택시로 어디든 갈 수 있는 지구촌에서

찾아보기 힘든 아주 편리한 도시입니다.

산과 강이 어우러지고 사계절마다 그 느낌이 다른 서울은 많은 외국인들에게

호감을 줍니다. 

여러분 중에서 방콕의 “차오 프라야”강 유람선을 타 보신 분 계신지요.

저는 그 흙탕물의 “차오 프라야” 강보다는 한강이 훨씬 맑고 아름답다고

생각합니다. 그런데 어떻습니까?

방콕에 가면 엄청난 관광객이 넘치고 있죠?

우리도 그렇게 할 수 있습니다.

우리 서울이 가진 장점을 충분히 살리면 그렇게 할 수 있습니다.

 마지막으로 말씀드리고 싶은 것은

이렇게 좋은 서울을 만들었을 때, ‘우리는 어떻게 해야 하는가?’입니다.

무엇보다도 서울을 세계인에게 알려야 하겠습니다.

무언가를 알리기 위해서는 상징물이 필요합니다.

뉴욕은 자유여신상, 파리는 에펠탑, 시드니는 오페라 하우스, 싱가폴은

머라이언상같은 상징을 떠올릴 수 있습니다.

우리도 서울을 떠올릴 수 있는 상징물을 창출해야 하겠습니다.

세계 곳곳에 서울을 안내하는 홍보나 광고를 적극적으로 해야겠습니다.

그리고 가격을 싸게 해줘야합니다.

호텔이나 음식점에 세제상의 혜택을 줘서라도 외국인들이 서울에 머무는 가격을

낮춰야 합니다.

호주를 비롯한 외국의 경우, 여행사에서 외국관광객을 데려오면 정부에서 여행객

1인당 일정액수의 장려금을 줍니다.

관광객에게는 호텔 객실요금도 할인해 줍니다.

관광수요를 높이는 일에 시민들도 동참할 수 있는 기회를 줘야합니다.

캐나다 캘거리에서는 매년 7월에 “스탬피드 축제”가 열립니다.

축제가 있는 날 아침, 길거리에서 외국 관광객들에게 시민들이 무료로 아침을

나눠주는 자원봉사를 하고 있습니다.

정부와 시민이 함께 명품 축제를 만들어 낸 것입니다.

이렇게 “품격있는 서울”이 되면 어떻게 좋아질까요.

서울로 관광객이 많이 오게 되겠죠.

서울에 온 사람들이 서울에서 돈을 쓰겠고

그에 따라서 일자리가 늘게 되고 소득이 늘게 됩니다.

여러분, 우리 모두 서울을 품격높고 개성있는 서울로 만들어 봅시다!

4만원 하는 곳을 택했어요.^^* 비용 저렴한 곳으로....
14만원하는 곳은 20만원짜리를 깍아 준 것이라고 하더군요.^^*
14만원을 준 문장이면 어땠을지..... ^^*

하하, 재미있네요. 꼭 물건 값처럼 4만원짜리, 14만원짜리... 아마도 4만원은 아르바이트하는 사람의 값이고 14만원은 풀 타임 직원 또는 컨트랙트를 맺고 있는 좀 더 경험 있는 사람의 값이 아닐까... 번역을 부탁하는 사람의 입장에서는 우리말이 영어로 바뀌면서, 더 좋은 글이 되기를 아무래도 바라지요. 그러나 그렇게 되려면 번역자가 일단 우리말 문장을 잘 쓸 줄 아는 사람이어야 하고, 또 그것을 매끄러운 영어로 바꿀 수 있는 능력이 있어야 합니다. 한마디로 어려운 일이지요. 이 두 가지를 갖춘 사람의 값은 위에 말한 대로 1백만원 정도라고 저는 보는데 돈이 문제가 아니라 그런 사람은 번역 시장에서 일하지 않을 겁니다.

내용이 좀 더 개선되었으면 하고....
그런데 이제 시간이 너무 없고
혹 고친다고 하드라도 다시 문장을 구성해야하는데.... 싶어서
현재의 한글 원고를 그대로 쓰되
이 게시판에서 수정해주시는 것을 반영(적용)하여
원본(영문)을 교정(수정)하여 11/19(금)까지 제출할 예정입니다.
대회는 1차 원고 심사가 중요하더군요.
영어, 일어, 중국어 3개국어 인데
총 16팀(개인 포함)을 1차로 선정하여 12/16일에
스피치 대회를 한답니다.^^*
1차 선정 발표가 11/26(금)이구요.
이 1차 심사에 통과하면 12/16(목) 본선에서는
최하 장려상이라도 받는다고 하더군요.^^*
(장려상 상금은 60만원)

11월 19일이면 여기 시간으로는 18일이니까 오늘 포함해서 3일 남았군요. 그 정도면 나머지 패러그래프 다 edit 할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 한 패러그래프가 끝났더라도 또 생각나는 게 있으면 다시 거꾸로 올라가 고치게 될 테니까 가만히 두셨다가 마지막에 한꺼번에 `반영' 하시기를... 그리고 제목 말씀인데... 현 시장의 슬로건도 그렇고 원고의 주제도 그러니 동양적인 추상명사 `품격' 보다는 의미가 금방 피부에 와 닿는 `명품 도시' 가 어떨까 합니다. Remodelling Seoul for a Designer City...

과찬의 말씀이십니다. 공교육 문제점... 참 심각하긴 한데, 어디서부터 어떻게 고쳐야 할지 사실 난감하지요... 정권이 달린 문제일 정도로 학부모, 교사, 학교, 관리 들의 입장이 각각 다르고 뿌리 깊은 간판 문화 같은 것이 쉽게 바뀌지 않을 것이기에... 저는 이민 오기 전에 정권이 바뀌면 입시제도를 비롯한 공교육 정책이 혁신되리라고 생각했어요. 그런데 안 바뀌는 건 물론이고 어떤 건 더 나빠지더라고요. 그제야 현실을 알았지요. 순진하게시리... 이젠 더 이상 고민하지 않고 답답해 하지 않습니다. 전에는 교육부장관을 제가 해서 대입 자율화부터 모든 걸 고쳐보고 싶었는데... 하하. 전반부는 여러 차례 봐서 다시 고칠 만한 게 없었고 어제 서둘러 한 제 7~10 paragraphs 중 몇군데 수정했습니다. 제가 먹고 사는 일에 얽매이지 않고 신문이나 고급 문장들을 더 많이 읽으면서 영문도 자주 쓰는 생활을 하고 있다면 더 좋은 글로 둔갑시킬 수 있었을 텐데... 아쉽네요. 잠이 늘 부족할 정도로 시간이 부족한 게 이민 생활이라 이런 가외의 일이 생기면 병 나기 쉬운데 저는 워낙 운동을 많이 하고 일을 즐기는 사람이라 아직까진 괜찮습니다... 하하. 농담이고요, 좋은 생각을 해보는 기회였습니다. 나중에 봉사 겸 소일거리로 `국문 수정 및 영역' 일을 할 수도 있겠더군요. 은퇴후 일거리가 자꾸만 늘어갑니다 이거...
