6.Heaven and Water Hexagram : Song / Conflict.
◎ The Song hexagram speaks of ways to overcome disputes and litigation.
While conflict is an inevitable part of life―whether by one's own doing or forced
by others―it should be avoided whenever possible to prevent getting entangled in fights.
The ultimate winner eliminates the seeds of conflict before any dispute even arises.
[Explanation]
"Conflict(Song) : Though you have sincerity, being obstructed, stating cautions,
and pursuing moderation brings good fortune, Pushing conflict to the very
end brings misfortune.
It is advantageous to see a great person, but it is not advantageous to cross a great stream."
[Commentary]
On a small scale, it means arguments and right-or-wrong disputes;
on a large scale, it refers to lawsuits and trials.
Because we live in a world with other people, opinions naturally differ,
Causing right-and-wrong disputes and inevitably leading to litigation to settle them.
Water(☵,감 -Gam) tends to flow downward, while Heaven (☰,건 -Geon) tends to rise upward.
Since both forces pull in opposite directions, asserting only their own perspectives,
harmony cannot be reached(不親,불친 - Unfriendly/ Incompatible).
AS noted in classic commrntaries, when people seek food and resources(飮食之道,음식지도
- The Way of Eating and Drinking), competition, quarrels, and disputes inevitably
arise over living needs.
People engage in lawsuits with the confidence that they can win.
However, maintaining a cautious, prudent attitude and seeking moderation leads
to good fortune, whereas pursuing conflict to the very end ultimately leads to disaster.
Meeting a great person who can mediate a lawsuit is beneficial,
but one who enjoys litigation cannot resolve grand matters.
The Song(訟,송) hexagram refers not only to personal contradictions and conflicts,
but also to internationall disputes and wars.
Therefore, a world free of litigation and war can only be achieved by seeking
harmony through mutual love and affection(親親,친친-愛愛,애애).
In conclusion, Song stems from foolishly failing to see the opponent's good points,
Pointing out only their bad pointing, and shifting the blame of distrust onto others.
Confucius also advised against getting involved in lawsuits from the start:
"I can hear lawsuits and judge them just like anyone else,
but what is truly necessary is to ensure that lawsuits do not arise in the first place."
Confucius Commentary : Tuan Zhuan [
Above is strong and below is perilous; strenght facing peril constitutes the symbol of Song.
Song Yu-bu Jil-cheok Jung-gil):
The strong comes and attains the middle ground.
Jong-gyong): Misfortune ensues because a lawsuit cannot be drought
to a successful conclusion.
I-gyeon-dae-in): It is advantageous to see a great person because
moving upward allows one to achieve moderation and correctness.
Bul-ri-seop-dae-cheon): It is unfavorable to cross
a great stream because one may fall into an abyss.
Historical Context & Allusion(고사).
King Wen(文王,문왕) held grievances against the tyranny of King Zhou of Shang(紂王,주왕)
and voiced his complaints.
After being released from the prison at Yuli(유리옥),
King Wen dedicated the land of Luoxi (洛西,낙서) King Zhou.
He also fled to a small town to escape the turbulent political situation
and had his honors stripped by King Zhou three separate times.
