hey everyone
my name is emily
my name's amanda
welcome to our channel gale force twins
today
we are going to teach you how to throw a large cast net
this means large means 10 feet or bigger
i would recommend throwing a casting this way with a 10 or 12 foot net and in 14 14
even if this is your first time learning how to throw a cast net
we do have a video on how to throw a small cast net
i would watch that video first to learn the building blocks and then go ahead and learn the 10 or 12.
[Applause]
we're going to get started throwing this
0:59
10 foot cast net
1:01
and just so you guys know throwing a 10
1:03
foot is
1:04
almost the exact same as throwing a six
1:05
seven or eight but there's one more step
1:08
if you're shorter and smaller and you
1:09
need an extra way to load the net over
1:11
your shoulder
1:12
today we're going to be throwing the net
1:13
right-handed so i'm going to be showing
1:15
you guys
1:16
amanda we'll be showing you guys and if
1:18
any of you are left-handed
1:19
drop in the comments because emily can
1:20
do a left-handed cast of throwing video
1:22
for you guys
1:23
all right let's get started the first
1:25
thing i'm going to do is i'm going to
1:26
load this entire net
1:28
facing you and then we're going to go
1:29
ahead i'm going to do it facing away
1:31
from you
1:32
that way you guys can follow along on
1:34
the second
1:35
half first things first we have our loop
1:38
in the net
1:39
and we like to take our line and pull it
1:41
through the loop
1:42
in order to create a little spot for
1:45
your left wrist this is my left hand for
1:47
the record
1:48
the whole that's gonna be loaded on my
1:49
left shoulder and then i'm throwing
1:51
with my right shoulder because i'm
1:53
right-handed i will do that one more
1:55
time
1:56
we have this loop right here and yes you
1:58
could stick your hand through here but
1:59
you see how big that hole is
2:01
you're more likely to lose your net just
2:03
remember if you are doing it this way
2:05
where you're making that hole nice and
2:07
tiny
2:08
make sure you're not throwing over a
2:09
sting ray or a manatee or a nurse shark
2:12
because that thing will pull you in the
2:13
in the water so
2:14
safety first guys first thing you want
2:16
to do is make sure that's completely
2:17
stretched out i'm going to go ahead and
2:18
grab my net right here
2:21
got all this rope but i'm going to grab
2:22
the horn of the net which is this green
2:24
part at the top
2:26
i'm going to stretch stretch stretch my
2:27
net out walk
2:29
backwards now what this does is make
2:31
sure when it's completely stretched out
2:34
i'm going to start the loading process
2:36
double check that the net is
2:37
ready to open in a pancake and then
2:39
finish loading
2:40
let's start this loading process
2:43
left hand left palm to the sky all the
2:46
way out
2:47
right palm facing down what this does
2:50
bring the hands together
2:51
grab transfer the rope and what this
2:54
does is this ensures my net
2:56
does not tangle left hand to the sky
2:59
right palm facing down and i'm taking
3:01
wingspans
3:03
loading the net all into my left hand
3:06
once i get to the horn
3:08
same thing on my last wingspan
3:12
i grab just underneath the horn bring my
3:15
right hand to my left
3:16
horn is facing away from me that's very
3:18
very important make sure the horn is
3:20
facing away from you
3:22
if you guys watch the small cast net
3:24
throwing video you'll notice everything
3:26
is the same
3:27
except this part left hand to the sky
3:31
grabbing my right hand probably a third
3:34
down the net
3:36
same exact thing right hand to my left
3:39
one more time this is the extra step for
3:41
a big net because as you can see my net
3:43
is still
3:44
on the floor so this is a ten foot neck
3:46
guys and amanda's five foot
3:47
five three five three so she's gonna
3:49
need to take two wraps of the net to get
3:51
it off the floor
3:52
this is the important part my left hand
3:55
is i'm just holding it up to make sure i
3:56
can get this net off the floor
3:59
grabbing with my right hand around mid
4:01
thigh
4:02
bringing my hands together and the net
4:05
is picked up
4:06
all in my left hand my left hand is on
4:09
top of my left shoulder
4:10
tucked in really tight my elbow is
4:12
tucked in
4:13
this is heavy but before i throw this
4:15
net i want to make sure it's not twisted
4:16
up so i'm going to show you what i would
4:17
do
4:18
keeping the net entirely loaded in my
4:21
left hand
4:22
i'm going to put this right in the
4:23
inside of my right foot
4:25
grab my outs grab my leg line i'm going
4:28
to bring it over beneath my right foot
4:31
and i'm just grabbing my outside lead
4:33
line you're not grabbing both leg lines
4:34
at one time
4:37
what this does we're just making sure
4:40
our net is not twisted up it's a really
4:42
important step to make sure you throw a
4:43
pancake
4:44
now if you previously had thrown a
4:46
pancake you really don't need to worry
4:48
about this step too much
4:49
but if for some reason you're throwing
4:50
bananas you're going to want to do this
4:53
between throws to make sure that your
4:56
net opens up you really want to set
4:57
yourself up for success
4:59
you guys have seen how involved
5:02
the loading process is you don't want to
5:05
have to do it twice if you don't have to
5:07
here we go we're almost there so we know
5:09
our net is nice and clean
5:12
all right that entire time i kept my
5:14
left hand
5:15
holding the net pick it up over the left
5:18
shoulder
5:19
i'm gonna get winded on this one all
5:22
right this is a heavy net
5:23
so what i'm going to do just tell me
5:26
grab down
5:27
grab that lead line closest to me i'm
5:30
going to take my right hand
5:32
and grab underneath both lead lines
5:36
just like that i'll do that one more
5:38
time
5:40
grab my lead line take my right hand
5:42
underneath
5:43
both lead lines now my right hand is
5:45
facing the sky your palm
5:47
my right palm your right palm is facing
5:49
the sky
5:50
and the idea right here is a separate
5:52
internet into thirds this is the first
5:54
step to stepping your nut into thirds
5:55
i'm going to toss this net
5:57
over my right hand into thirds
6:03
now i have my right hand facing up and
6:05
i'm going to take everything that i
6:06
threw over my right
6:08
arm and collect it in my right hand this
6:11
is the tricky part
6:13
take my left hand out my right arm is
6:16
going to go underneath my left
6:18
come in between the elbow and my body
6:22
right hand goes underneath the left
6:23
elbow we're gonna bring it around
6:25
and pat ourselves on the back just like
6:28
that
6:28
do you guys get that don't worry i'm
6:30
gonna do this again facing
6:32
away from you so you can follow along as
6:34
you can see both
6:35
lead lines are over beneath my left
6:37
shoulder coming
6:38
both lead lines right grab inside grab
6:41
the lead line
6:42
outside lead line and then it has the
6:43
intestine
6:45
ground slip on this closest to me we're
6:47
going to open it up so i'm now
6:49
inside the net you guys got that
6:52
i think we got it all right time to load
6:55
the second third of the net
6:57
gonna reach down grab the lead line
6:59
that's closest to me
7:00
this time my right hand goes inside the
7:03
net
7:03
so my whole body is essentially inside
7:05
the net we're going to go ahead
7:07
and swing this until i get about a third
7:10
of it
7:11
in my right hand once again take what's
7:14
on my right arm
7:16
drop it down into my right hand collect
7:19
it all
7:21
and the important part here is to make
7:23
sure that you grab that lead line
7:25
with your first finger and your thumb
7:27
and it's facing the outside
7:31
so what we have here a third of the net
7:34
over my left shoulder
7:35
a third of the net hanging down in front
7:36
of me and a third of the net loaded
7:39
into my right hand all the way down my
7:41
right hand is straight
7:42
bottom of the net and something i want
7:45
to point out guys is look at where the
7:46
lead line is it's around at amanda's
7:48
knee height yes
7:49
if you have the lead too close to the
7:50
ground it will be hard for you to get a
7:52
nice
7:53
throw so make sure you have it nicely
7:54
decently up off the floor depending on
7:56
your height
7:57
for amanda's case knee height or higher
7:59
is better all right so because this is
8:01
such a big big net for me
8:03
it's really important to get a swing
8:05
going i'm leading with my right foot and
8:08
my right shoulder
8:09
so when i go to throw this i'm going to
8:11
firmly plant my right foot in the ground
8:13
and i'm going to take my right shoulder
8:16
twist it to the right
8:17
following with the left shoulder my
8:19
right arm is out
8:20
out out and at the same time my hips are
8:23
following through
8:24
and the last thing you're going to do is
8:26
let go of your right hand
8:28
so i'm going to go ahead get a little
8:30
bit of a swing going
8:32
when the net is at the top of the back
8:33
swing that's going to make that
8:35
commitment to plant my right foot down
8:38
and start that turn
8:54
here we go all right guys
8:57
let's check this out
9:00
right hand is right here that's what was
9:03
closest to me that's what i released
9:05
last left shoulder is where the neck
9:09
crinkled right here
9:10
this is something that pretty much
9:12
always happens for me now if i were on a
9:14
boat
9:15
or up a little bit then that would have
9:17
more time to open
9:18
and this could actually open my left
9:20
hand is released all the way
9:22
out there what do you think emily
9:25
i think that was pretty good all right
9:27
now i'm going to show you guys how to do
9:29
this facing
9:30
away from me and follow along our net is
9:32
already opened up
9:33
we're going to grab underneath this horn
9:37
we're going to walk it back
9:42
until we're completely stretched out
9:43
just like that
9:45
now we're going to go ahead and load
9:46
this net emily why don't you stand
9:48
behind me
9:49
left hand left palm to the sky right
9:52
palm facing down
9:53
bring the hands together grab transfer
9:55
the rope
9:57
and what this does is this ensures my
9:58
net does not
10:00
tangle left hand to the sky right palm
10:03
facing down
10:04
and i'm taking wingspans loading the net
10:06
all into my left hand
10:09
once i get to the horn same thing
10:13
i grab just underneath the horn bring my
10:16
right hand to my left
10:17
horn is facing away from me that's very
10:20
very important make sure the horn is
10:21
facing away from you
10:23
left hand to the sky grabbing my right
10:26
hand
10:27
probably a third down the net same exact
10:29
thing right hand to my left
10:32
one more time this is the extra step for
10:34
a big net because as you can see my net
10:36
is still
10:37
on the floor my left hand is i'm just
10:39
holding it up to make sure i can get
10:40
this net off the floor
10:42
grabbing with my right hand around mid
10:44
thigh
10:46
bringing my hands together and the net
10:48
is picked up
10:49
all in my left hand my left hand is on
10:52
top of my left shoulder
10:53
tucked in really tight my elbow is
10:55
tucked in
10:56
this is heavy i'm gonna grab the net
10:59
down here
11:00
grab the lead line i'm gonna go ahead
11:03
and
11:03
put my right arm underneath both lead
11:06
lines with my right hand facing up to
11:07
the sky
11:08
i'm gonna load a third of the net
11:11
over my right hand do that one more time
11:16
i'm going to take what's in my right
11:18
hand
11:19
drop it down and collect it all like
11:22
this
11:24
this is the tricky part this is where
11:27
the net
11:28
goes the right hand goes between you and
11:31
the net
11:32
underneath your left elbow pat yourself
11:35
on the back
11:36
all right as you can see we have both
11:39
lead lines
11:40
over my left shoulder i'm going to grab
11:43
that inside lead line
11:46
and open this thing up so i'm wearing
11:49
the net
11:50
we're going to load the second third of
11:51
the net i'm going to grab that lead line
11:53
but this time my right hand goes inside
11:56
the net
11:57
we're going to load up a third of the
11:58
net
12:04
take what's collected over my right arm
12:08
collect it all in my right hand grab
12:11
that lead line
12:12
between your first finger and your thumb
12:16
all right your net is loaded you're
12:18
ready to get that swing going
12:20
as long as you're not as up off the
12:21
floor you're good to go now when we do
12:24
this part
12:25
once again it's really helpful to get
12:26
that swing going
12:28
and when your net is at the top of the
12:30
back swing you're going to plant your
12:31
right foot firmly in the ground
12:33
lead with your right shoulder take your
12:36
right hand
12:37
open it up twist it to the right
12:39
following with the left shoulder my
12:40
right arm is out
12:42
out and the last thing you're going to
12:43
do is let go of your right hand let's
12:44
give this a go
13:04
okay
13:07
go let's take a look at this net once
13:09
again
13:11
right hand dropped right here close to
13:12
me left shoulder
13:16
right here so left shoulder isn't that
13:17
open i probably need to make sure
13:20
that i really had that net open up over
13:22
my left shoulder
13:23
or like you said earlier if you were up
13:25
above the water level it would have
13:26
given time to finish
13:27
opening left hand all the way out there
13:30
all this that's out here is amanda's
13:32
left hand
13:34
and to the right that's where amanda's
13:36
right hand
13:37
let go last and over here
13:41
is where her shoulder was pretty good
13:43
amanda way to go yes
13:45
thanks so much for watching guys we hope
13:47
this video was helpful
