오늘 전례

성주간의 첫째 날인 ‘주님 수난 성지 주일’은 예수 그리스도께서 파스카 신비를 완성하시려고 예루살렘에 입성하신 것을 기념하는 날이다. 교회는 오늘 성지(聖枝) 축복과 행렬을 거행하면서 예수님의 예루살렘 입성을 영광스럽게 기념하는 한편, ‘주님의 수난기’를 통하여 그분의 수난과 죽음을 장엄하게 선포한다. 성지를 들고 예수님의 예루살렘 입성을 환영하는 것은 4세기 무렵부터 거행되어 10세기 이후에 널리 전파되었다.

오늘은 주님 수난 성지 주일입니다. 예수님께서 파스카 신비를 완성하시려고 예루살렘에 입성하신 것을 기념하는 날입니다. 수난하시고 십자가에 못 박혀 돌아가시고 묻히셨다가 영광스럽게 부활하신 주님을 따라, 우리도 죽음에서 부활로 건너가는 파스카 신비에 동참합시다.

주님의 예루살렘 입성 기념

예수님과 제자들이 1 예루살렘에 가까이 이르러
올리브 산 벳파게에 다다랐을 때, 예수님께서 제자 둘을 보내며 2 말씀하셨다.
“너희 맞은쪽 동네로 가거라.
매여 있는 암나귀와 그 곁의 어린 나귀를 곧바로 보게 될 것이다.
그것들을 풀어 나에게 끌고 오너라.
3 누가 너희에게 무어라고 하거든, ‘주님께서 필요하시답니다.’ 하고 대답하여라.
그러면 그것들을 곧 보내 줄 것이다.”
4 예언자를 통하여 하신 말씀이 이루어지려고 이 일이 일어난 것이다.
5 “딸 시온에게 말하여라. 보라, 너의 임금님이 너에게 오신다.
그분은 겸손하시어 암나귀를, 짐바리 짐승의 새끼, 어린 나귀를 타고 오신다.”
6 제자들은 가서 예수님께서 지시하신 대로 하였다.
7 그들은 그렇게 암나귀와 어린 나귀를 끌고 와서
그 위에 겉옷을 펴 놓았다. 예수님께서 그 위에 앉으시자,
8 수많은 군중이 자기들의 겉옷을 길에 깔았다.
또 어떤 이들은 나뭇가지를 꺾어다가 길에 깔았다.
9 그리고 앞서 가는 군중과 뒤따라가는 군중이 외쳤다.
“다윗의 자손께 호산나! 주님의 이름으로 오시는 분은 복되시어라.
지극히 높은 곳에 호산나!”
10 이렇게 하여 예수님께서 예루살렘에 들어가시니
온 도성이 술렁거리며, “저분이 누구냐?” 하고 물었다.
11 그러자 군중이 “저분은 갈릴래아 나자렛 출신 예언자 예수님이시오.” 하고
대답하였다.

파스카 축제 엿새 전에 주님께서 예루살렘에 들어오실 때, 아이들이 종려나무 가지를 들고, 그분을 맞으러 나가 외치는 소리, * “높은 데서 호산나! 당신의 크신 자비로 오시는 분, 찬미받으소서.”

제1독서

<나는 모욕을 받지 않으려고 내 얼굴을 가리지도 않았다. 나는 부끄러운 일을 당하지 않을 것임을 안다(‘주님의 종’의 셋째 노래).>

4 주 하느님께서는 나에게 제자의 혀를 주시어
지친 이를 말로 격려할 줄 알게 하신다. 그분께서는 아침마다 일깨워 주신다.

5 주 하느님께서 내 귀를 열어 주시니
나는 거역하지도 않고 뒤로 물러서지도 않았다.

수석 사제들에게 가서 물었다.

오늘 밤 닭이 울기 전에 너는 세 번이나 나를 모른다고 할 것이다.”

36 그때에 예수님께서 제자들과 함께 겟세마니라는 곳으로 가셨다.
그리고 제자들에게 말씀하셨다.

그분께서는 근심과 번민에 휩싸이기 시작하셨다.

너희는 여기에 남아서 나와 함께 깨어 있어라.”
39 ○ 예수님께서는 앞으로 조금 나아가 얼굴을 땅에 대고 기도하시며
이렇게 말씀하셨다.
+ “아버지, 하실 수만 있으시면 이 잔이 저를 비켜 가게 해 주십시오.
그러나 제가 원하는 대로 하지 마시고 아버지께서 원하시는 대로 하십시오.”
40 ○ 예수님께서 제자들에게 돌아와 보시니 그들은 자고 있었다.
그래서 베드로에게 말씀하셨다.
+ “이렇게 너희는 나와 함께 한 시간도 깨어 있을 수 없더란 말이냐?
41 유혹에 빠지지 않도록 깨어 기도하여라. 마음은 간절하나 몸이 따르지 못한다.”
42 ○ 예수님께서 다시 두 번째로 가서 기도하셨다.
+ “아버지, 이 잔이 비켜 갈 수 없는 것이라서 제가 마셔야 한다면,
아버지의 뜻이 이루어지게 하십시오.”
43 ○ 그리고 다시 와 보시니 그들은 여전히 눈이 무겁게 감겨 자고 있었다.
44 예수님께서는 그들을 그대로 두시고 다시 가시어
세 번째 같은 말씀으로 기도하셨다. 45 그리고 제자들에게 돌아와 말씀하셨다.
+ “아직도 자고 있느냐? 아직도 쉬고 있느냐?
이제 때가 가까웠다. 사람의 아들은 죄인들의 손에 넘어간다.
46 일어나 가자. 보라, 나를 팔아넘길 자가 가까이 왔다.”
47 ○ 예수님께서 아직 말씀하고 계실 때에
바로 열두 제자 가운데 하나인 유다가 왔다.
그와 함께 수석 사제들과 백성의 원로들이 보낸 큰 무리도
칼과 몽둥이를 들고 왔다.
48 그분을 팔아넘길 자는,
“내가 입 맞추는 이가 바로 그 사람이니 그를 붙잡으시오.” 하고
그들에게 미리 신호를 일러두었다. 49 그는 곧바로 예수님께 다가가 말하였다.
● “스승님, 안녕하십니까?”
○ 그러고 나서 예수님께 입을 맞추었다. 50 예수님께서 말씀하셨다.
+ “친구야, 네가 하러 온 일을 하여라.”
○ 그때에 무리가 다가와 예수님께 손을 대어 그분을 붙잡았다.
51 그러자 예수님과 함께 있던 이들 가운데 한 사람이 칼을 빼어 들고,
대사제의 종을 쳐서 그의 귀를 잘라 버렸다.
52 그때에 예수님께서 그에게 이르셨다.
+ “칼을 칼집에 도로 꽂아라. 칼을 잡는 자는 모두 칼로 망한다.
53 너는 내가 내 아버지께 청할 수 없다고 생각하느냐?
청하기만 하면 당장에 열두 군단이 넘는 천사들을 내 곁에 세워 주실 것이다.
54 그러면 일이 이렇게 되어야 한다는 성경 말씀이 어떻게 이루어지겠느냐?”
55 ○ 그때에 예수님께서는 그 무리에게도 이렇게 이르셨다.
+ “너희는 강도라도 잡을 듯이 칼과 몽둥이를 들고 나를 잡으러 나왔단 말이냐?
내가 날마다 성전에 앉아 가르쳤지만 너희는 나를 붙잡지 않았다.
56 예언자들이 기록한 성경 말씀이 이루어지려고 이 모든 일이 일어난 것이다.”
○ 그때에 제자들은 모두 예수님을 버리고 달아났다.
57 무리는 예수님을 붙잡아 카야파 대사제에게 끌고 갔다.
그곳에는 율법 학자들과 원로들이 모여 있었다.
58 베드로는 멀찍이 떨어져 예수님을 뒤따라 대사제의 저택까지 가서,
결말을 보려고 안뜰로 들어가 시종들과 함께 앉았다.
59 수석 사제들과 온 최고 의회는 예수님을 사형에 처하려고
그분에 대한 거짓 증언을 찾았다.
60 거짓 증인들이 많이 나섰지만 하나도 찾아내지 못하였다.
마침내 두 사람이 나서서 말하였다.
61 ▣ “이자가 ‘나는 하느님의 성전을 허물고
사흘 안에 다시 세울 수 있다.’고 말하였습니다.”
62 ○ 대사제가 일어나 예수님께 물었다.
● “당신은 아무런 대답도 하지 않소?
이자들이 당신에게 불리한 증언을 하는데 어찌 된 일이오?”
63 ○ 그러나 예수님께서는 입을 다물고 계셨다. 대사제가 말하였다.
● “내가 명령하오. ‘살아 계신 하느님 앞에서 맹세를 하고
당신이 하느님의 아들 메시아인지 밝히시오.’”
64 ○ 예수님께서 대사제에게 말씀하셨다.
+ “네가 그렇게 말하였다. 나는 너희에게 말한다.
이제부터 ‘너희는 사람의 아들이 전능하신 분의 오른쪽에 앉아 있는 것과
하늘의 구름을 타고 오는 것을 볼 것이다.’”
65 ○ 그때에 대사제가 자기 겉옷을 찢고 이렇게 말하였다.
● “이자가 하느님을 모독하였습니다. 이제 우리에게 무슨 증인이 더 필요합니까?
방금 여러분은 하느님을 모독하는 말을 들었습니다.
66 여러분의 의견은 어떻습니까?”
○ 그들이 대답하였다.
▣ “그자는 죽을죄를 지었습니다.”
67 ○ 그때에 그들은 예수님의 얼굴에 침을 뱉고 그분을 주먹으로 쳤다.
더러는 손찌검을 하면서 말하였다.
68 ▣ “메시아야, 알아맞혀 보아라. 너를 친 사람이 누구냐?”
69 ○ 베드로는 안뜰 바깥쪽에 앉아 있었는데
하녀 하나가 그에게 다가와 말하였다.
● “당신도 저 갈릴래아 사람 예수와 함께 있었지요?”
70 ○ 베드로는 모든 사람 앞에서 부인하였다.
● “나는 당신이 무슨 말을 하는지 모르겠소.”
71 ○ 베드로가 대문께로 나가자 다른 하녀가 그를 보고
거기에 있는 이들에게 말하였다.
● “이이는 나자렛 사람 예수와 함께 있었어요.”
72 ○ 베드로는 맹세까지 하면서 다시 부인하였다.
● “나는 그 사람을 알지 못하오.”
73 ○ 조금 뒤에 거기 서 있던 이들이 베드로에게 다가와 말하였다.
▣ “당신도 그들과 한패임이 틀림없소. 당신의 말씨를 들으니 분명하오.”
74 ○ 그때에 베드로는 거짓이면 천벌을 받겠다고 맹세하기 시작하며 말하였다.
● “나는 그 사람을 알지 못하오.”
○ 그러자 곧 닭이 울었다.
75 베드로는 “닭이 울기 전에 너는 세 번이나 나를 모른다고 할 것이다.” 하신
예수님의 말씀이 생각나서, 밖으로 나가 슬피 울었다.
27, 1 아침이 되자 모든 수석 사제들과 백성의 원로들은
예수님을 사형에 처하기로 결의한 끝에,
2 그를 결박하여 끌고 가서 빌라도 총독에게 넘겼다.
3 그때에 예수님을 팔아넘긴 유다는
그분께서 사형 선고를 받으신 것을 보고 뉘우치고서는,
그 은돈 서른 닢을 수석 사제들과 원로들에게 돌려주면서 4 말하였다.
● “죄 없는 분을 팔아넘겨 죽게 만들었으니 나는 죄를 지었소.”
○ 그들은 말하였다.
▣ “우리와 무슨 상관이냐? 그것은 네 일이다.”
5 ○ 유다는 그 은돈을 성전 안에다 내던지고 물러가서 목을 매달아 죽었다.
6 수석 사제들은 그 은돈을 거두면서 말하였다.
▣ “이것은 피 값이니 성전 금고에 넣어서는 안 되겠소.”
7 ○ 그들은 의논한 끝에
그 돈으로 옹기장이 밭을 사서 이방인들의 묘지로 쓰기로 하였다.
8 그래서 그 밭은 오늘날까지 ‘피밭’이라고 불린다.
9 그리하여 예레미야 예언자를 통하여 하신 말씀이 이루어졌다.
“그들은 은돈 서른 닢, 값어치가 매겨진 이의 몸값,
이스라엘 자손들이 값어치를 매긴 사람의 몸값을 받아
10 주님께서 나에게 분부하신 대로 옹기장이 밭 값으로 내놓았다.”
11 예수님께서 총독 앞에 서셨다. 총독이 물었다.
● “당신이 유다인들의 임금이오?”
○ 예수님께서 대답하셨다.
+ “네가 그렇게 말하고 있다.”
12 ○ 그러나 수석 사제들과 원로들이 당신을 고소하는 말에는
아무 대답도 하지 않으셨다. 13 그때에 빌라도가 예수님께 물었다.
● “저들이 갖가지로 당신에게 불리한 증언을 하는데 들리지 않소?”
14 ○ 그러나 예수님께서는 어떠한 고소의 말에도 대답을 하지 않으셨다.
그래서 총독은 매우 이상하게 여겼다.
15 축제 때마다 군중이 원하는 죄수 하나를 총독이 풀어 주는 관례가 있었다.
16 마침 그때에 예수 바라빠라는 이름난 죄수가 있었다.
17 사람들이 모여들자 빌라도가 그들에게 물었다.
● “내가 누구를 풀어 주기를 원하오?
예수 바라빠요 아니면 메시아라고 하는 예수요?”
18 ○ 빌라도는 사람들이 예수님을 시기하여 자기에게 넘겼음을 알고 있었던 것이다.
19 빌라도가 재판석에 앉아 있는데 그의 아내가 사람을 보내어 말하였다.
● “당신은 그 의인의 일에 관여하지 마세요.
지난밤 꿈에 내가 그 사람 때문에 큰 괴로움을 당했어요.”
20 ○ 그동안 수석 사제들과 원로들은 군중을 구슬려
바라빠를 풀어 주도록 요청하고 예수님은 없애 버리자고 하였다.
21 총독이 그들에게 물었다.
● “두 사람 가운데에서 누구를 풀어 주기를 바라는 것이오?”
○ 군중이 대답하였다.
◎ “바라빠요.”
22 ○ 빌라도가 그들에게 물었다.
● “그러면 메시아라고 하는 이 예수는 어떻게 하라는 말이오?”
○ 군중이 모두 외쳤다.
◎ “십자가에 못 박으시오!”
23 ○ 빌라도가 다시 물었다.
● “도대체 그가 무슨 나쁜 짓을 하였다는 말이오?”
○ 군중은 더욱 큰 소리로 외쳤다.

24 ○ 빌라도는 더 이상 어찌할 수가 없을 뿐만 아니라
오히려 폭동이 일어나려는 것을 보고,
물을 받아 군중 앞에서 손을 씻으며 말하였다.
● “나는 이 사람의 피에 책임이 없소. 이것은 여러분의 일이오.”
25 ○ 그러자 온 백성이 대답하였다.
◎ “그 사람의 피에 대한 책임은 우리와 우리 자손들이 질 것이오.”

영성체 후 묵상

오늘 두 가지 복음 말씀에 등장하는 군중은 이중적인 모습을 보입니다. ‘호산나!’를 외치는 환호성은 곧바로 십자가에 못 박으라는 함성으로 바뀝니다. 예수님을 따르는 데 자신의 감정과 생각을 기준으로 삼을 때는 결코 오래갈 수 없습니다. 주님의 십자가를 바라보며 그분께서 보여 주시는 진리에 끊임없이 자신을 비추어 보면서 그분의 가르침을 실천할 때만이 오래갈 수 있습니다.

When Jesus and the disciples drew near Jerusalem
and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives,
Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them,
"Go into the village opposite you,
and immediately you will find an ass tethered,
and a colt with her.
Untie them and bring them here to me.
And if anyone should say anything to you, reply,
'The master has need of them.'
Then he will send them at once."
This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet
might be fulfilled:
Say to daughter Zion,
"Behold, your king comes to you,
meek and riding on an ass,
and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden."

    becoming obedient to the point of death,
    even death on a cross.
Because of this, God greatly exalted him
    and bestowed on him the name
    which is above every name,
    that at the name of Jesus
    every knee should bend,
    of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,    
    and every tongue confess that
    Jesus Christ is Lord,
    to the glory of God the Father.

Gospel

Mt 26:14—27:66 

One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot,
went to the chief priests and said,
"What are you willing to give me
if I hand him over to you?"
They paid him thirty pieces of silver,
and from that time on he looked for an opportunity
to hand him over.

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
the disciples approached Jesus and said,
"Where do you want us to prepare
for you to eat the Passover?"
He said,
"Go into the city to a certain man and tell him,
'The teacher says, "My appointed time draws near;
in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples."'"
The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered,
and prepared the Passover.

When it was evening,
he reclined at table with the Twelve.
And while they were eating, he said,
"Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."
Deeply distressed at this,
they began to say to him one after another,
"Surely it is not I, Lord?"
He said in reply,
"He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me
is the one who will betray me.
The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him,
but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
It would be better for that man if he had never been born."
Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply,
"Surely it is not I, Rabbi?"
He answered, "You have said so."

While they were eating,
Jesus took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and giving it to his disciples said,
"Take and eat; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying,
"Drink from it, all of you,
for this is my blood of the covenant,
which will be shed on behalf of many
for the forgiveness of sins.
I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine
until the day when I drink it with you new
in the kingdom of my Father."
Then, after singing a hymn,
they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Then Jesus said to them,
"This night all of you will have your faith in me shaken,
for it is written:
I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be dispersed;
but after I have been raised up,
I shall go before you to Galilee."
Peter said to him in reply,
"Though all may have their faith in you shaken,
mine will never be."
Jesus said to him,
"Amen, I say to you,
this very night before the cock crows,
you will deny me three times."
Peter said to him,
"Even though I should have to die with you,
I will not deny you."
And all the disciples spoke likewise.

Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane,
and he said to his disciples,
"Sit here while I go over there and pray."
He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee,
and began to feel sorrow and distress.
Then he said to them,
"My soul is sorrowful even to death.
Remain here and keep watch with me."
He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying,
"My Father, if it is possible,
let this cup pass from me;
yet, not as I will, but as you will."
When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep.
He said to Peter,
"So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?
Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test.
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again,
"My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass
without my drinking it, your will be done!"
Then he returned once more and found them asleep,
for they could not keep their eyes open.
He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time,
saying the same thing again.
Then he returned to his disciples and said to them,
"Are you still sleeping and taking your rest?
Behold, the hour is at hand
when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners.
Get up, let us go.
Look, my betrayer is at hand."

While he was still speaking,
Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived,
accompanied by a large crowd, with swords and clubs,
who had come from the chief priests and the elders
of the people.
His betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying,
"The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him."
Immediately he went over to Jesus and said,
"Hail, Rabbi!" and he kissed him.
Jesus answered him,
"Friend, do what you have come for."
Then stepping forward they laid hands on Jesus and arrested him.
And behold, one of those who accompanied Jesus
put his hand to his sword, drew it,
and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
Then Jesus said to him,
"Put your sword back into its sheath,
for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.
Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father
and he will not provide me at this moment
with more than twelve legions of angels?
But then how would the Scriptures be fulfilled
which say that it must come to pass in this way?"
At that hour Jesus said to the crowds,
"Have you come out as against a robber,
with swords and clubs to seize me?
Day after day I sat teaching in the temple area,
yet you did not arrest me.
But all this has come to pass
that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled."
Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Those who had arrested Jesus led him away
to Caiaphas the high priest,
where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
Peter was following him at a distance
as far as the high priest's courtyard,
and going inside he sat down with the servants
to see the outcome.
The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin
kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus
in order to put him to death,
but they found none,
though many false witnesses came forward.
Finally two came forward who stated,
"This man said, 'I can destroy the temple of God
and within three days rebuild it.'"
The high priest rose and addressed him,
"Have you no answer?
What are these men testifying against you?"
But Jesus was silent.
Then the high priest said to him,
"I order you to tell us under oath before the living God
whether you are the Christ, the Son of God."
Jesus said to him in reply,
"You have said so.
But I tell you:
From now on you will see 'the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power'
and 'coming on the clouds of heaven.'"
Then the high priest tore his robes and said,
"He has blasphemed!
What further need have we of witnesses?
You have now heard the blasphemy;
what is your opinion?"
They said in reply,
"He deserves to die!"
Then they spat in his face and struck him,
while some slapped him, saying,
"Prophesy for us, Christ: who is it that struck you?"

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.
One of the maids came over to him and said,
"You too were with Jesus the Galilean."
But he denied it in front of everyone, saying,
"I do not know what you are talking about!"
As he went out to the gate, another girl saw him
and said to those who were there,
"This man was with Jesus the Nazorean."
Again he denied it with an oath,
"I do not know the man!"
A little later the bystanders came over and said to Peter,
"Surely you too are one of them;
even your speech gives you away."
At that he began to curse and to swear,
"I do not know the man."
And immediately a cock crowed.
Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken:
"Before the cock crows you will deny me three times."
He went out and began to weep bitterly.

When it was morning,
all the chief priests and the elders of the people
took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
They bound him, led him away,
and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.

Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned,
deeply regretted what he had done.
He returned the thirty pieces of silver
to the chief priests and elders, saying,
"I have sinned in betraying innocent blood."
They said,
"What is that to us?
Look to it yourself."
Flinging the money into the temple,
he departed and went off and hanged himself.
The chief priests gathered up the money, but said,
"It is not lawful to deposit this in the temple treasury,
for it is the price of blood."
After consultation, they used it to buy the potter's field
as a burial place for foreigners.
That is why that field even today is called the Field of Blood.
Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah
the prophet,
And they took the thirty pieces of silver,
the value of a man with a price on his head,
a price set by some of the Israelites,
and they paid it out for the potter's field
just as the Lord had commanded me.

Now Jesus stood before the governor, and he questioned him,
"Are you the king of the Jews?"
Jesus said, "You say so."
And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders,
he made no answer.
Then Pilate said to him,
"Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?"
But he did not answer him one word,
so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Now on the occasion of the feast
the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd
one prisoner whom they wished.
And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.
So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them,
"Which one do you want me to release to you,
Barabbas, or Jesus called Christ?"
For he knew that it was out of envy
that they had handed him over.
While he was still seated on the bench,
his wife sent him a message,
"Have nothing to do with that righteous man.
I suffered much in a dream today because of him."
The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds
to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus.
The governor said to them in reply,
"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?"
They answered, "Barabbas!"
Pilate said to them,
"Then what shall I do with Jesus called Christ?"
They all said,
"Let him be crucified!"
But he said,
"Why? What evil has he done?"
They only shouted the louder,
"Let him be crucified!"
When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all,
but that a riot was breaking out instead,
he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd,
saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood.
Look to it yourselves."
And the whole people said in reply,
"His blood be upon us and upon our children."
Then he released Barabbas to them,
but after he had Jesus scourged,
he handed him over to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium
and gathered the whole cohort around him.
They stripped off his clothes
and threw a scarlet military cloak about him.
Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head,
and a reed in his right hand.
And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying,
"Hail, King of the Jews!"
They spat upon him and took the reed
and kept striking him on the head.
And when they had mocked him,
they stripped him of the cloak,
dressed him in his own clothes,
and led him off to crucify him.

As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon;
this man they pressed into service
to carry his cross.

And when they came to a place called Golgotha
—which means Place of the Skull —,
they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall.
But when he had tasted it, he refused to drink.
After they had crucified him,
they divided his garments by casting lots;
then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
And they placed over his head the written charge against him:
This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
Two revolutionaries were crucified with him,
one on his right and the other on his left.
Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying,
"You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
save yourself, if you are the Son of God,
and come down from the cross!"
Likewise the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him and said,
"He saved others; he cannot save himself.
So he is the king of Israel!
Let him come down from the cross now,
and we will believe in him.
He trusted in God;
let him deliver him now if he wants him.
For he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
The revolutionaries who were crucified with him
also kept abusing him in the same way.

From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land
until three in the afternoon.
And about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
"Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?"
which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Some of the bystanders who heard it said,
"This one is calling for Elijah."
Immediately one of them ran to get a sponge;
he soaked it in wine, and putting it on a reed,
gave it to him to drink.
But the rest said,
"Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save him."
But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice,
and gave up his spirit.

Here all kneel and pause for a short time.

And behold, the veil of the sanctuary
was torn in two from top to bottom.
The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened,
and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection,
they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus
feared greatly when they saw the earthquake
and all that was happening, and they said,
"Truly, this was the Son of God!"
There were many women there, looking on from a distance,
who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.
Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph,
and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

When it was evening,
there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph,
who was himself a disciple of Jesus.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus;
then Pilate ordered it to be handed over.
Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen
and laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock.
Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the tomb
and departed.
But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary
remained sitting there, facing the tomb.

The next day, the one following the day of preparation,
the chief priests and the Pharisees
gathered before Pilate and said,
"Sir, we remember that this impostor while still alive said,
'After three days I will be raised up.'
Give orders, then, that the grave be secured until the third day,
lest his disciples come and steal him and say to the people,
'He has been raised from the dead.'
This last imposture would be worse than the first."
Pilate said to them,
"The guard is yours;
go, secure it as best you can."
So they went and secured the tomb
by fixing a seal to the stone and setting the guard.
