Canada experienced a “Year Without a Summer” in 1816 due to global climate anomalies caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora.

In 1816, Canada, along with much of the Northern Hemisphere, faced severe cold, frost, and even snow during the summer months, leading to widespread crop failures and food shortages. In regions like Atlantic Canada and the Red River Settlement (present-day Manitoba), settlers struggled to grow crops, and unusual cold persisted well into June and July. Historical accounts describe June snow flurries in Nova Scotia and frost that damaged crops across the region.

The primary cause of this extreme weather was the April 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in present-day Indonesia, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history. The eruption released massive amounts of ash and sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere, forming a veil of volcanic aerosols that blocked sunlight and lowered global temperatures by about 0.4–0.7°C, enough to disrupt normal seasonal patterns. This phenomenon is known as a volcanic winter.

The consequences in Canada were severe. The Red River colonists faced near-total crop failure and relied on the assistance of local Indigenous communities to survive. The extreme weather also contributed to social unrest, exemplified by events like the Seven Oaks Massacre, which occurred amid tensions exacerbated by the harsh conditions. Across North America, the cold summer led to food shortages, economic distress, and migration in search of better farming opportunities.

Globally, 1816 was marked by famine, unusual snowfalls, and persistent cold in Europe, New England, and parts of Asia, making it one of the most dramatic examples of climate disruption caused by volcanic activity. In Canada, the year became historically remembered as “Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death” or the “Summer of Mittens”, highlighting the severity of the cold.
