주를 사모하는 마음 Love for the Lord

내가 궁핍하므로 말하는 것이 아니라 어떠한 형편에든지 내가 자족하기를 배웠노니 내가 비천에 처할 줄도 알고 풍부에 처할 줄도 알아 모든 일에 배부르며 배고픔과 풍부와 궁핍에도 일체의 비결을 배웠노라 내게 능력 주시는 자 안에서 내가 모든 것을 할 수 있느니라 그러나 너희가 내 괴로움에 함께 참예하였으니 잘 하였도다 빌립보서 4:11-14

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Nevertheless, you have done well to share with me in my affliction. Philippians 4:11-14

오래도록 주와 하나 됨에 대하여 증거하고 왔습니다. 이제 주님이 어디 멀리 계시지 아니하고 지금 나와 하나 되어 계심은 얼추 인정하게 되지 않았나 싶습니다. 그러다보니 이제는 주님을 만나고 싶은 심정입니다. 그리 가까이 계시다니 주님의 현존을 한번 느껴보기라도 했으면 합니다. 오늘 말씀의 제목은 주를 사모하는 마음입니다.

I have been preaching the unification with the Lord for a long time. I know now God is not that far away from me. He is right here united with me. Knowing that he is close by me makes me want to meet him in person. I want to feel his presence. Let me talk to you about my love for the Lord.

그리고 돌아보면 우리의 삶이라는 것이 참으로 지난한 고난과 시험의 과정이 아닌가 싶습니다. 여전히 시험은 현재진행형이고 아직 끝나지 않았습니다. 성경 전체를 보더라도 시험은 종종 등장하는 단골 주제입니다. 에덴동산에서부터 시작된 시험은 아브라함과 광야 이스라엘의 시험, 욥의 시험, 그리고 예수님도 시험을 받으셨습니다. 물론 오늘 우리들이 받는 시험들도 있습니다.

Looking back, I realized that life is pretty tough and we have encountered a fair share of hardships and tests. These tests are still ongoing in our everyday life. We often see this word “tests” in the Bible, which goes all the way back to Abraham and wilderness wandering of Israel, Job and even Jesus had to face a test. And of course we all have to endure these tests, too.

시험의 주체가 자신이냐, 하나님이시냐, 마귀냐 하는 것은 마귀를 사용하여 하나님께서 하시지만 결국 자신의 문제라고 요약할 수 있겠습니다. 시험이라는 것은 탈락시키기 위함보다는 일정한 자격을 갖추기 위하여 치러지는 경우가 많습니다. 마귀는 파괴의 방편을 사용하지만 하나님은 그도 사용하여 우리를 살려주십니다. 오늘 함께 나누고자 하는 내용은 그것을 통과하는 우리 자신의 심정은 어떤 변화의 과정을 겪는가 하는 점입니다.

Who is testing us then? It could be yourself, God, or the devil used by God, but it all boils down to my own problems. Tests are often designed to qualify someone not to fail someone. The devil chooses destruction as a way of testing us, yet the Lord uses Satan to save us. Today, I want to discuss what we go through when we pass those tests.

빌립보서는 에베소서, 골로새서, 빌레몬서와 함께 바울의 4대서신 중의 하나입니다. 바울은 옥에 갇혔고 빌립보 교인들이 보내준 것에 대한 감사의 글입니다. 빌립보에 있을 때 바울은 손수 천막을 짜서 팔아 생활을 하며 자비량 사역을 해야 했던 것은 이 교회가 넉넉지 못하였기 때문입니다. 그렇기 때문에 그들의 나눔은 더욱 눈물겨운 것이었습니다. 여기에 많은 복음의 진리를 언급하지만 특히 오늘 본문에 나타난 바는 그의 자족함입니다.

The books of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon are often called “the Prison Epistles” written by the apostle Paul during his imprisonment in an effort to thank Philippians for the sharing they sent him. Paul supported himself by making tents while living and preaching in Philippi. I am sure his ministry was not easy under such conditions, yet his sharing was all the more meaningful and powerful. I want to highlight the self-sufficiency in his ministry.

흔히 능력이라고 하면 무언가를 성취하는 힘으로 생각하기 쉽습니다. 하지만 바울이 말한 능력은 자족함으로 표현되고 있습니다. 자족함은 결코 조건의 형통함에 의존하지 않습니다. 그것은 마음에 달려있고 아는 데서 얻어지는 것입니다. 바울은 그가 겪은 고난을 통하여 이 능력을 얻게 되었다고 하지 아니하고 오히려 “내게 능력 주시는 자 안에서”라고 말합니다. 결국 능력은 고난 속에서 스스로 갖는 것이 아니라 주시는 이로부터 받게 되는 것입니다.

When we say “competency”, we often think of the ability to achieve something. However, Paul describes it as self-sufficiency, which comes from your mind, not from the requirements and conditions you meet to be sufficient. He says he can do all things not through what he had endured but “through him who strengthens me.” We need to remember we can do all things as Paul mentioned not through our hardships but through him who strengthens us.

그런데 그 능력은 자족입니다. 이를 좀 생각해보면 마치 좋은 형편이나 나쁜 형편에 다 족할 줄 안다고 조건을 이야기 하는 것처럼 보이지만 실은 자신에 대하여 말하고 있음을 알아차릴 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 필요와 요구는 다 자신 안에서 나오기 때문입니다. 하와는 자신에게서 얻지 못한다고 생각한 온전한 지혜를 선악과를 먹음으로 얻을 수 있다고 여겼던 것입니다. 그러나 바울은 그것이 이미 능력 주시는 자 안에서 자신에게 주어져 있음을 알았습니다.

When Paul says he can do all things, he is talking about self-containment. If you really think about what he meant, self-containment is not something that you are just satisfied with the current condition no matter what. In fact, it does not depend on the how little or how much you have. It depends on you, your mind because our needs and requirements are all coming from your mind. Eve ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge hoping that she would be able to gain perfect wisdom that otherwise she could not have. But Paul knew everything is possible only through God.

주님은 우리의 능력주시는 자로서 우리와 하나로 계십니다. 이 한 가지 사실이 내 자신의 고백이 되고 경험과 증거가 되는 과정이 곧 시험의 과정입니다. 결국 시험을 통과한 후에 알게 되는 사실은 주를 사모하는 마음이 곧 나 자신, 즉 주 안에서 회복된 나 자신을 사랑하는 것으로 느껴지게 되는 것입니다. 그것이 바울이 말한 자족하는 능력입니다. 그리고 그러한 마음을 서로 나누는 주 안의 형제자매를 사랑하는 마음으로 느껴지는 것입니다.

God is the one who strengthens and empowers us, and he is living united with us. And the very journey that this becomes my own testimony and confession is the test we are undergoing. After successfully passing the test, we will realize that the love for the Lord will bring about love for ourselves, the renewed selves within the Lord. This is the self-containment Paul was referring to. When you are truly self-contained through God, you will be able to share this love with others as well.

우리는 자주 시험을 치릅니다. 시험은 자격을 갖추기 위한 과정입니다. 때로 준비하는 것이 쉽지는 않지만 그래도 필요한 것을 압니다. 믿음을 가지고 살아가는 데도 시험이 올 수 있습니다. 모든 시험에는 정답이 있듯이 살아가면서 당하는 시험에도 답이 있습니다. 그것은 주와 하나 된 자신을 아는 것입니다. 주와 하나 되어 회복되는 사람은 자신에게 주신 모든 것이 다 선한 것을 알기에 족한 마음을 갖고 자신을 아끼고 사랑할 줄 압니다. 그리고 그런 형제자매들을 사랑할 수 있습니다.

We often take exams. The test is a process to qualify. Sometimes it's not easy to prepare, but I know what I need. Tests can come even if you live with faith. As there are answers to all tests, so there are answers to the tests that you take in your life of faith, It's about knowing who you are, being unified with the Lord. The one who is restored in the Lord is good enough to know that everything given is good, and he loves and cares for himself. And he can love brothers and sister in the Lord.
