Police departments across the country are taking a hard new look at some of their cold cases tonight in a chilling prison confession. A convicted murderer in Colorado is claiming he killed 48 people over 25 years. ABC's Bill Redeker reports on what could be one of this country's worst serial killing sprees.
Robert Charles Browne, a former Army medic, who is serving life in prison without parole for the murder of this 13-year-old Colorado girl more than 20 years ago, now may be responsible for at least four dozen homicides from 1970 to 1995. Pictures of his victims were shown to reporters by the Sheriff in Colorado Springs today as he described the sadistic methods Browne used to kill both men and women.
"Strangulation was either done with his hands or with a ligature. Most of them were stabbings with either a knife, a screwdriver, or an ice pick."
Authorities have linked Browne to seven murders so far, in Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and Colorado. But Browne says he also killed people in five additional states, and even as far away as South Korea.
Authorities say in exchange for his confession, they've agreed not to pursue the death penalty. If Browne's claims prove to be true, he will be ranked as one of the most notorious mass murders in recent U.S. history.
