<P class=바탕글>Ergative Verb는 목적어가 올수도 있고 자동사로 쓰일수도 있는 동사이다. 그리고 타동사의 대격보어가 자동사의 주격보어로서 나타나는 동사이다. Ergative Verb 는 V패턴과 V N패턴 두군데에서 다 쓰인다. 예를 들면</P>
<P class=바탕글>The vase broke.</P>
<P class=바탕글>Fred broke the lamp.</P>
<P class=바탕글>V패턴에서 주어인 명사구는 V N패턴에서도 명사구로 쓰인다.</P>
<P class=바탕글>Ergative verb는 행하는 사람 관점에서 행위를 묘사할수도 있고 그 행위에 의해 영향을 받는것의 관점에서 묘사할 수도 있다. </P>

<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" class=바탕글>increase The pressure increased.</P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" class=바탕글>The doctor increased the pressure.</P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" class=바탕글>block up Powdering a sweaty nose will only block up the pores.</P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" class=바탕글>With this disease the veins in the liver can block up.</P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" class=바탕글>Ergative verb는 3가지로 분류할 수 있다. Active, Accomplishment, Achievement로 나뉜다. 몇 가지 예를 들어보겠다.</P>
