6.Heaven and Water Hexagram : Song / Conflict.
▣ Heaven and water move in opposite directions, which creates Conflict(Song).
Thus, when initiating any enterprise, a noble person must carefully plan
and deliberate from the very beginning.
[Explanation]
Heaven and water move in opposite directions, which creates Conflict(Song).
Thus, when initiating any enterprise, a noble person must carefully plan
and deliberate from the very beginning to end.
[Commentary]
The sun, moon, and stars in the sky move from east to west,
while the rivers and streams on earth flow from west to east, acting in opposition
to one another [天與水違行,천여수위행 - Heaven and water move in contrary directions].
Observing this dynamic, when a noble person intends to undertake a task,
they must throughly and deeply deliberate at the very beginning to prevent future disputes.
Wang Bi also cites Laozi to discuss litigation as follows:
"To eliminate litigation, one must plan the beginning well.
Planning the beginning requires establishing good systems and rules."
Unclear contracts are the root cause of disputes.
If clear boundaries are maintained for all matters and individuals do not overstep their duties,
how could conflict ever arise?
The occurrence of litigation stems from flaws in agreements.
Therefore, a virtuous person takes responsibility for agreements and does not blame others.
Laozi lesarned lessons regarding disputes from water, which does not contend.
Cheng Yi also noter that if the upper and lower classes are in harmony with each other,
how could legal disputes and conflicts ever arise?
Because a noble person understands the nature of disputes merely by observing
the trigram images, they must carefully examine the very beginning when starting
any task to prevent disputes from arising.
Zhu Xi also stated that by observing opposing tendencies and carefully planning
from the beginning, one can cut off the seeds of litigation.
First, in the Hexagram of Conflict(訟卦,송괘 -Song), slander is attached to the mouth of Dui
(兌,태 - Trigram of Lake), which then reaches the ear of Kan(坎,감 - Trigram of Water),
thereby causing trouble.
Furthermore, although water originates from the sky, the movements of water and sky
are in opposition; since heaven is the origin of energy and physical form,
right and wrong arise from the very beginnings of these forces.
In the brief moment of lifting and setting down a spoon, or while laughing and talking,
the world splits and reality unfolds.
The sprouting of right and wrong is the root cause.
Could the succession of power from Yao to Shun have caused Danzhu
to sprout seeds of dispute?
Textual analysis shows that 'Contrary movement" means Qian(乾,건, ☰ - Heaven)
moves upward while Kan(坎,감, ☵ - Water) moves downward.
Also, the inner trigram Kan represents prior intellectual perception,
leading to "Planning the beginning," and when combined with the action of Qian,
it becomes "Planning carefully from the beginning when taking action."
Next is Zhixu's lucid explanation that 'Pursuing illusory forms brings about disputes."
"Heaven is Taiji and water is also Taiji, so the nature of the mind is originally without fault."
Since "Heaven producing water" has never failed, why would one now follow illusory forms?
Heaven is above and water is below, moving in opposite directions;
thus, while one intends to remain pure, governance becomes biased and corrupted.
Merely failing to be cautious in thought at the outset allowed defilement and habit
to grow stronger, eventually going agaunst one's true nature.
Therefore, when alone, a noble person must exercise caution at the very inception
of every action and thought,
ensuring they do not bring self-reproach or internal conflict upon themselves.
