고맙게 느낀다 의미의 appreciate 는 3형식 동사나 목적으로 인칭대명사를 쓰지 않고 소유격 + 동명사구나 다른 명사구를 목적으로 쓴다
You are grateful to someone for something, and that "something" is what you appreciate. E.g.,
I am grateful to you because you were a great teacher. I greatly appreciate how much you taught me. I am grateful to my friends for their support. I have many friends, and I greatly appreciate their support.
It
is possible to say, "I greatly appreciate you," but it sounds a bit
odd, and does not mean exactly the same thing as "I am grateful to you."
It's a bit difficult to explain, but I'll try. Think of it this way:
To appreciate something = to be grateful for something.
You are grateful to someone for X. You appreciate X.
So
if you say, "I appreciate you," that basically means, "I am grateful
for you," i.e., "I am grateful for the fact that you exist." (If you believe in God, you might say, "I am grateful to God for you (or for the fact that you exist.")
Hmm,
I think that's not such a good explanation. In any case, "I appreciate
you" is something that we would rarely say. It's almost always, "I
appreciate your help/your support/your having done something for me,
etc..."
To appreciate = to be grateful for something; to be aware of; to understand.
This is to be distinguished from "to be grateful to someone:
"I greatly appreciate you" :(X): As general guidance, you do not appreciate persons or animate objects. You appreciate inanimate objects, or a person's [or an animate creature's] actions, ideas, concepts, feelings, etc. The
construction you want is, "I appreciate your <insert abstract
noun>" or "I appreciate the <noun> that you <verbed>
me/him/etc."
I appreciate your visiting me in hospital." I appreciate the gift that you gave me." I
appreciate your clear explanation of how the machine works <- I am
grateful for your clear explanation of how the machine works I
appreciate your idea of how you think the machine works." <- I am
aware of or understand how you think the machine works (often followed
by, "...but it is wrong.") I would appreciate your ideas on how the machine works." <- I would be grateful for your ideas on how the machine works."
appreciate 에는 감사표시 말고도 공손한 요청의미도 있으므로 잘 가려써야 한다 https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/i-appreciate-that.2375208/
A request to do something: I would appreciate it if you would pick up the report for me.
요청의 의미일 경우 that 절을 쓰지 않고 대명사 it 를 동반한 if 절로 하여 공손한 표현에 쓰이는 가정법과 같은 효과를 낸다 문법적으로는 it = if you would pick up the report for me 동격으로 보이는건 실질적인 목적 의미의 if 절을 구조상의 목적으로 쓰지 않기에 it 를 대명사로하여 쓴 때문이다
Thanking someone for having already done something: I appreciate that you picked up the report for me OR I appreciate your picking up the report for me.
You have to be very clear in English when using the verb "appreciate"
whether you are asking someone to do something for you, or thanking them
for having already done it.
