Nation in deep mourning for naval hero
As rescuers struggled to search for the 46 missing sailors of the naval ship Cheonan that sank in the West Sea a week ago, the nation continued to mourn a Navy warrant officer who perished while conducting an underwater operation Tuesday.
Warrant Officer Han Joo-ho of Underwater Demolition Team died after complaining of breathing difficulties and losing consciousness during an operation near the submerged stern. He was one of the first divers to arrive at the wreckage.
“He called me during lunch and said ‘I will go in today and search all the cabins.’ I told him to stop as it was too dangerous to dive three to four times a day,” said Ryu Ho-chang of UDT comrade association. “But he said that the families of the missing soldiers are overwhelmed up with anxiety.”
“He kept saying ‘should something happen, it should be me down there. I’m better experienced.’ He just couldn’t sit idly by while his subordinates were going in the treacherous waters.”
The 53-year-old veteran had joined the navy in 1975. He was known as an expert even among Special Forces personnel. During his 35 years of service, he was a drill sergeant for 18. “Nothing is impossible” was his motto.
“I wonder how many can make a life sacrifice to carry out one’s duty. He was like a godfather who showed us the way,” said Navy SEAL Senior Chief Petty Officer Choi Ho-seok.
Lieutenant Commander Kim Geun-han of the Navy SEALs also said “He has trained hundreds of UDT soldiers, including myself, who remember him as a respected master. We were all shocked to hear the news.”
Thousands lined up to pay tribute to the late diver at the Armed Forces Medical Command. The number had reached about 2,200 yesterday morning. Prime Minister Chung Un-chan, National Assembly Speaker Kim Hyung-o, Defense Minister Kim Tae-young, Army Chief of Staff Han Min-koo, and Navy Chief of Staff Kim Sung-chan paid visits and consoled Han’s family.
“Warrant Officer Han was a true soldier who sacrificed his life. I’m very sorry for the loss,” Chung said holding the hands of Han’s widow. Defense Minister Kim told Han’s family that Han had lived a heroic life. “I will do my best not to have such a tragedy repeated,” he said.
The ruling Grand National Party Chairman Chung Mong-joon, Democratic Party Chairman Chung Sye-kyun, and Liberal Forward Party Chairman Lee Hoi-chang also paid visits.
President Lee Myung-bak sent his Chief of Staff Chung Jung-gil and chief security aide Kim Sung-hwan to deliver his words of comfort. Lee had ordered the Cabinet to pay utmost respect to the late diver. The Ministry of National Defense conferred Han with Gwangbok Medal, 5th class Order of National Security Merit on Wednesday.
Nearly 5,000 people commemorated Han through numerous postings on Agora, an online message board. U.S. President Barack Obama told President Lee that he was praying for Han and his family while on a phone call yesterday morning.
“I think a true hero was born through his noble sacrifice. I am quite relieved that there are people like Han protecting our country,” said Seo Jun-myeong, an office worker in Seoul.
Han is to be buried in the national cemetery tomorrow, following a five-day mourning period.
Question.
1)Can you swim? How far away can you swim? Do you think you can survive in the middle of the ocean?
If a ship is wrecked, it is damaged so much that it sinks or can no longer sail.
2) Do you think you sacrifice yourself for a worthy cause such as helping someone’s plight or for your country?
3) If your family and loved one can receive plenty of money around 1 billion won and receive a pension
After you sacrifice yourself for the honor of the country or your friendships, would you do that?
4) If you can rescue 10 people in your lifeboat, who will you choose? If possible, line up in sequence.
5) What is the truth of this severe disaster? Do you think there is any conspiracy between media
and government?
