The setting is spectacular. What's inside isn't shabby either. The crowds gather to see remarkable things, and mostly to get wet. There is a rich history both on the stage and in the circus, of gadgets, devices and machines. They entertain. Sometimes, they amaze.
You want to pretend to be a one-man Roman Army? Easy.
If you can't spread your own chocolate, there is a machine that will do it for you. You've always wanted to play percussion. I mean really play percussion. But why not do it upside down?
The exhibition is one of the highlights of Paris' Annual Summer Festival. Some of these machines are prototypes. Others have an older story to tell.
"This is an exhibition of machines that were used in theaters and shows. And we show how they work. In the last scene of one show put on by our company, there was a flying piano. It was Romans relied on to catapult the piano across the stage. So, what we're doing in this exhibition is reproducing machines as they were used in that show."
People who've come here seem to enjoy it. And why not? Some of them even get a free drink.
"I think it's great," says this visitor, "this exhibition really takes you to a dream world. The atmosphere is easygoing. People smile a lot. It's good fun."
Good fun too for all those taking part, for another ten days people will get the chance to see a little bit of theatrical history.
