하나님은 떨기나무 사이에 불꽃으로 오셔서 모세를 만나시고 그의 사명을 주십니다. 그리고 이제 백성을 이끌고 나온 모세를 통해 그의 백성들을 만나주십니다. 같은 산에서 이제는 떨기나무가 아니라 산 전체에 강림하십니다. 하나님은 사람과의 만남을 원하십니다. 그들에게 복주시고 은혜를 알고 감사하도록 부르십니다. 그를 만난 사람들은 자신의 삶의 방향이 전환됩니다. 자신을 향한 삶에서 하나님을 향한 삶으로 방향을 바꿉니다. 극단적인 예는 바울입니다. 자신이 스스로 믿던 자의적 종교에서 그리스도를 만난 기쁨으로 남은 삶을 살아갑니다.

주님은 오늘날도 우리를 만나주십니다. 불붙는 산이나 떨기나무에서 혹은 엘리야처럼 세미한 음성으로 만나 주십니다. 엘리야의 하나님은 갈멜산에서 불로 임하십니다. 그러나 호렙산에서 만난 하나님은 불이나 바람이나 지진가운데 계시지 않고 세미한 음성으로 말씀하십니다. 그리고 새로운 부르심으로 그를 인도하십니다. 엘리야는 기름부음받은 자에서 기름을 붓는 자로 변화됩니다. 그렇게 왕과 선지자를 세우고 역사의 뒤안길로 사라집니다. 그러나 갑절의 영감을 받은 엘리사보다 엘리야는 주앞에 인정받습니다. 변화산에서 예수님은 모세와 엘리야를 만나 대화하십니다. 곧 십자가에서 죽으실 것과 다시 살아나실 것을 의논하십니다.

우리는 모세의 손에 이끌려 시내산으로 올라갑니다. 아론을 데리고 오라는 하나님의 음성에 따라 우리는 제사장의 모습으로 올라갑니다. 그런데 올라가다 보면 제사장이 아닌 제물의 모습으로 변화하게 됩니다. 어린 양의 희생을 기억하며 이삭처럼 순종하는 자녀로 그 앞에 서게 됩니다. 우리는 각자 저마다의 부르심을 듣고 주님 앞으로 나아갑니다. 어떤 형상이든지 환경, 형편이든지 상관없이 우리는 순종하는 외아들을 닮아가기 원하게 됩니다. 처음엔 기적을 보고 따랐으나 후에는 그의 영광을 구하며 그 분의 얼굴을 구하는 예배자가 되어 아버지의 긍휼을 구하는 항복의 형상을 가지게 됩니다.

하나님은 호기심으로 그에게 나아오는 자를 막으십니다. 호기심으로 선악과를 먹었듯이 하나님의 임재의 영광과 불꽃에 다가오는 자는 죽음을 면치 못할 것입니다. 그런데 모세와 아론은 그 분 앞으로 초대받습니다. 이것이 은혜입니다. 누가 담대히 하나님의 면전에 설 수 있겠습니까 오직 그의 택함받은 자만이 그 분의 임재앞에 설 수 있으며 그의 친밀한 사랑을 받아 누릴 수 있습니다.

모세는 떨기나무에서 시내산으로 그리고 바위 틈에서 주의 영광을 보는 자리까지 나아갑니다. 그리고 회막에서 항상 친구와 이야기하듯이 하나님과 대화를 나눕니다. 예수님도 내가 너희를 친구라 하였노니라고 말씀하십니다. 우리는 그 분의 자녀이며 친구이며 순종하는 종이며 왕같은 제사장이며 그의 입술같은 선지자들입니다. 우리는 본래 그렇게 지어졌고 부름받았고 택함받고 세워졌습니다.

사람은 자신의 본 모습을 발견하기위해 평생의 여정을 떠납니다. 처음엔 모방을 시작합니다. 원숭이의 모습입니다. 부모님과 스승과 친구를 모방하며 자신의 정체성을 찾아갑니다. 그 후에 자신을 발견한 사람은 사자의 모습을 가집니다. 자신의 확고한 본성을 발견하고 때로는 독수리나 사자처럼 날고 뛰게 됩니다. 그런데 나이가 들고 성숙해 지면서 지혜의 모습을 가집니다. 여우나 뱀의 얕고 간교한 꾀가 아니라 현명하고 바른 길을 갈 수 있게 됩니다. 그러나 참 지혜는 오직 예수 안에만 있습니다. 그를 발견하는 자는 모든 것을 얻은 사람입니다. 그를 잃은 사람은 아무 것도 얻지 못한 채 빈손으로 세상을 떠납니다.

여호와의 산에 오를 자 누구며 그 거룩한 곳에 설 자가 누구인가 곧 손이 깨끗하며 마음이 청결하며 뜻을 허탄한 데 두지 아니하며 거짓 맹세하지 아니하는 자로다(시24:3)
거룩과 정결을 사모하는 사람이 하나님을 만나뵙고 그의 얼굴의 영광을 볼 것입니다.

하나님은 에덴에서 아담을 만나셨고 모리아산에서 아브라함의 참 신앙을 보시고 인정하셨고 시내산에서 예배하는 모세를 만납니다. 그리고 그들을 친구라고 부르십니다. 오늘도 이 자리에 오신 여러분을 인격적으로 얼굴과 얼굴을 대하여 만나기 원하십니다. 그리고 그 분의 임재의 향기 안에 영혼이 쉼을 얻기 원하십니다. 그의 영원하신 큰 팔에 안겨 생명과 활력을 공급받고 풍성한 위로를 얻으시기 바랍니다.

Set Apart the Holy Ground
Exodus 19:16–25

God’s Desire to Meet His People
God first appeared to Moses in the flames of the burning bush, giving him a mission. Later, on Mount Sinai, He descended not just upon a bush but upon the whole mountain to meet His people. God longs to meet humanity—to bless, to reveal His grace, and to call us into thanksgiving. Those who encounter Him experience a turning point: life shifts from self-centeredness to God-centeredness. Paul is the radical example—once bound by his own religion, he met Christ and lived the rest of his days in joy.

Encounters with God
The Lord still meets us today. Sometimes He comes in fire, sometimes in a gentle whisper. Elijah saw fire fall on Mount Carmel, but on Mount Horeb God was not in the fire, wind, or earthquake—He was in the gentle voice. That voice led Elijah into a new calling. He became not only the anointed one but the one who anoints, establishing kings and prophets. On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah about His coming death and resurrection.

From Priests to Offerings
We ascend Mount Sinai with Moses. At God’s command to bring Aaron, we go up as priests. Yet as we climb, we are transformed into offerings. Remembering the Lamb’s sacrifice, we stand before Him as obedient children like Isaac. Each of us hears our own calling and approaches the Lord. At first we follow because of miracles, but later we seek His glory, His face, becoming worshipers who surrender and plead for mercy.

Grace to Stand in His Presence
God forbids those who approach Him out of curiosity. Just as curiosity led to the fall in Eden, those who draw near without reverence cannot escape death. Yet Moses and Aaron are invited into His presence. This is grace. Who can stand before God’s face? Only His chosen ones, who enjoy His intimate love.

Friendship with God
Moses journeyed from the burning bush to Sinai, then to the cleft of the rock where he saw God’s glory. In the tent of meeting, he spoke with God as a friend. Jesus also said, “I have called you friends.” We are His children, His friends, His obedient servants, royal priests, and prophets. We were created, called, chosen, and established for this very purpose.

The Journey of Identity
Human beings spend their lives seeking their true identity. At first they imitate—like monkeys—copying parents, teachers, and friends. Later, those who discover themselves live boldly like lions or soar like eagles. With maturity comes wisdom—not shallow cunning, but true discernment. Yet ultimate wisdom is found only in Jesus. Whoever finds Him gains everything; whoever loses Him departs empty-handed.

Who May Ascend?
“Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.” (Psalm 24:3–4)
Those who long for holiness and purity will meet God and behold His glory.

God’s Invitation Today
God met Adam in Eden, Abraham on Mount Moriah, and Moses on Sinai. He called them His friends. Today, He desires to meet you personally, face to face. In the fragrance of His presence, He longs to give your soul rest. May you be embraced in His everlasting arms, receiving life, vitality, and abundant comfort.
