Flood of new sprayed-on postmark machines installed in early 2006
By Jay Bigalke
Many more United States mail-processing centers began using new sprayed-on postmark technology in late January and early February. So far, 109 locations are using the new sprayed-ons.
Fifteen new mail distribution facilities are using the new sprayed-on postmarks and are listed in the table nearby. Recent city or regional postmarks are shown nearby, graphically cropped from envelopes.
Only new sprayed-on postmarks received by Linn’s after Feb. 7 are listed in the chart nearby.
Readers interested in obtaining a listing of all of the locations to date should send a No. 10 return envelope franked with 39¢ postage to the address given at the end of this article.
Cities previously reported to be using the postmarks were listed in the Nov. 21, 2005, issue, page 8; Dec. 26, 2005, issue, page 14; Feb. 13, page 13; and Feb. 20, page 15.
More than 270 cities with regional mail-processing centers are expected to transition to sprayed-on cancels by the end of summer 2006. Approximately 160 offices are left to convert to the new technology, an average of about 28 per month for the next six months.
Linn’s encourages readers to send in sprayed-on postmarks of cities not listed here. Items should be sent to Jay Bigalke, Linn’s, Box 29, Sidney, OH 45365. Thanks to all who sent in recent examples of sprayed-on postmarks.
