Delivery Service Uses Robots to Bring You Food
While companies race to make self-driving cars, there's another race going on – to create robots that can deliver food and other products to people’s homes.
And while most people are familiar with Uber Eats and other food delivery services, Berkeley-based startup Kiwi is showing that having robots deliver your food is more than just a novelty.
“We have little robots that roam the sidewalk and deliver food to your neighborhood. Instead of doing two or three deliveries an hour ... we’re able to do six to eight,” says Sasha Iatsenia, head of product at Kiwi. The robots have already made over 10,000 deliveries.
Using a smartphone app, customers order food from a local restaurant. A person then picks it up and brings it to a nearby robot, which takes the meal the rest of the way to the customer. The robots are only used for short deliveries of around 300 meters.
Kiwi robots have six cameras and sensors to stop them from hitting cars, lampposts, and people's feet.
Even though they are able to move on their own, the robots still get a bit of help on their way. A small team of people working from Colombia monitor the robot during delivery. So, if something goes wrong, someone is always ready to take over.
It may seem like a lot of effort just to deliver a burrito in under 35 minutes. But each delivery brings us closer to a future where robots are part of our daily lives.
