NVC_25/01/28(화) 7장: Receiving Empathically

For example, shortly after participating in an NVC training, a volunteer at a hospital was requested by some nurses to talk to an elderly patient; "We've told this woman she isn't that sick and that she'd get better if she took her medicine, but all she does is sit in her room all day long repeating, 'I want to die. I want to die.'"  NVC 프로그램에 참가해 교육을 받기 시작한 한 여성의 얘기이다. 병원에서 자원 봉사하는 이 여성은 함께 일하는 간호사들로부터 나이든 한 여성 환자와 이야기를 좀 해달라는 부탁을 받았다. 우리는 이 환자에게 병이 그리 심각하지 않고, 약을 계속 복용하면 좋아질 수 있다고 말했어요. 하지만 이 환자는 병실에 앉아서 하루 종일 ‘죽고 싶어, 죽어야지’ 라는 말만 계속해요. The volunteer approached the elderly woman, and as the nurses had predicted, found her sitting alone, whispering over and over, "I want to die." "So you would like to die." the volunteer empathized. Surprised, the woman broke off her chant and appeared relieved. She began to talk about how no one understood how she was feeling. The volunteer continued to reflect back the woman's feelings; before long, such warmth had entered their dialogue that they were sitting with their arms locked around each other. 그 자원봉사자는 노부인에게 다가갔다. 그리고 간호사들이 예상했듯이 혼자 앉아 있음을 발견했다. "나는 죽고 싶다", "나는 죽고 싶다" 라는 말을 반복하면서. "아~ 당신은 죽기를 원하시는군요" 라고 자원봉사자가 공감을 표했다.놀랍게도 그 부인은 중얼거림을 멈췄고 안심하는 듯보였다.그 노부인은 이야기를 시작했다. 어떻게 아무도 그녀가 무엇을 느끼는지에 대해 이해 못했음에 대해서 그 자원봉사는 계속 그 부인의 감정을 받아주고 되돌려주었다.얼마 지나지 않는 따뜻한 감정이 그들 대화에 느껴져 왔다.. 그 자원봉사자와 노부인은 팔짱을 낀 채로 앉아 있었다. Later that day, the nurses questioned the volunteer about her magic formula; the elderly woman had started to eat and take her medicine, and was apparently in better spirits. Although the nurses had tried to help her with advice and reassurance, it wasn't until her interaction with the volunteer that this woman received what she was truly needing: connectin with another human being who could hear her profound despair. 그날 후에 간호사들은 그 노부인이 다시 음식과 약을 먹기 시작했고, 겉으로 보기로 훨씬 더 좋은 컨디션을 가질 수 있도록 한 것에 대해간호사들은 어떤 매직같은 공식을 사용했는지 그 자원 봉사자에게 질문을 했다. 간호사들은 그 노부인에게 충고와 reassurance를 제공하려고 시도했지만그 노부인이 진정 원하는 것을 받게 된 것은  그 자원봉사자와 만남을 시작한 이후부터였다.그 부인이 원했던 것은 그녀의 깊은 절망을 들어 주는 다른 어떤 사람이 필요했던 것이다.
