Spring had passed and so had summer..

Freddie, the leaf, had grown large. 
His mid-section was wide and strong, 
and his five extensions were firm and pointed.
He had first appeared in spring 
as a small sprout on a rather large branch 
near the top of a tall tree.








나뭇잎 프레디는 커다랗게 자라났다.
그의 가운데 잎맥은 넓고 질겨졌고
그리고 옆으로 펼쳐진 그의 다섯 개 잎맥도 단단하고 날카로웠다.

Freddie was surrounded by hundreds of other leaves 
just like himself, or so it seemed. 
Soon he discovered that no two leaves were alike, 
even though they were on the same tree. 
Alfred was the leaf next to him. 
Ben was the leaf on his right side, 
and Clare was the lovely leaf overhead.

프레디는 그와 모습이 꼭 닮거나 비슷하게 생긴
수많은 다른 나뭇잎에 둘러싸여 있었다.
그리고 오래 지나지 않아 그는 나뭇잎들이
같은 나무에 매달려 있지만 
똑같은 나뭇잎은 하나도 없다는 것을 알았다. 
앨프레드는 그의 옆에 있는 나뭇잎이었다.
벤은 그의 오른쪽에 있는 나뭇잎이었고,
그리고 클레어는 그의 머리위에 있는 
사랑스러운 나뭇잎이었다. 







They had all grown up together. 
They had learned to dance in the spring breezes, 
bask lazily in the summer sun 
and wash off in the cooling rains.

그들은 모두 함께 무럭무럭 자라났다.

여름의 뜨거운 태양아래서 게으르게 햇볕을 쪼였으며

But it was Daniel who was Freddie's best friend. 
He was the largest leaf on the limb 
and seemed to have been there before anyone else. 
It appeared to Freddie 
that Daniel was also the wisest among them. 

그러나 프레디의 가장 친한 친구는 다니엘이었다.
그는 그 가지에서 가장 넓은 나뭇잎이었고
다른 나뭇잎이 태어나기도 전에 그 가지에 있었던 것처럼 보였다.

It was Daniel who told them that they were part of a tree. 
It was Daniel who explained 
that they were growing in a public park. 
It was Daniel who told him that the tree had strong roots, 
which were hidden in the ground below.

그들이 공원에서 자라고 있다는 것을 설명해 주었다. 
그리고 다니엘은 프레디에게 나무는 땅 밑에 숨겨진

He explained about the birds 
who came to sit on their branch and sing morning songs. 
He explained about the sun, the moon, 
the stars and the seasons. 
다니엘은 나뭇가지에 앉기 위해서 찾아와서
아침의 노래를 부르는 새들에 대해서도 설명해 주었다.
그는 태양과 달과 별 그리고 계절에 대해서도
설명해 주었다.

Freddie loved being a leaf. 
He loved his branch, his light leafy friends, 
his place high in the sky, the wind that jostled him about, 
the sun rays that warmed him, 
the moon that covered him with soft, white shadows.

프레디는 나뭇잎으로 존재하며 살아가는 것을 사랑했다.
그는 자신이 매달린 가지를 사랑했으며, 명랑한 나뭇잎 친구들,
그리고 그의 자리가 하늘 높이 있다는 것과 
바람이 그를 스쳐 지나가는 것, 그를 따뜻하게 해주는 햇살과
부드러움으로 감싸주는 달 그리고 하얀 그림자를 사랑했다.


Summer had been especially nice. 
The long hot days felt good 
and the warm nights were peaceful and dreamy.

여름은 유달리 좋았다.
길고 더운 날들은 상쾌한 기분을 느끼게 해주었고
따뜻한 밤은 평화로웠고 꿈꾸는 듯 아름다웠다.


There were many people in the park that summer. 
They often came and sat under Freddie's tree. 
Daniel told him that giving shade was part of his purpose.

그 여름의 공원에는 사람들이 많았다.
그들은 종종 프레디가 있는 나무로 다가와서 그 밑에 앉았다.
다니엘은 그늘을 만들어 주는 것이 그의 목적의 일부라고 
프레디에게 말했다. 


"What's a purpose?" Freddie had asked. 

"목적이 무엇이지?"하고 프레디가 물었다. 







Summer 13



"A reason for being" Daniel had answered. 
"To make things more pleasant for others is a reason for being. 
To make shade for old people who come to escape 
the heat of their homes is a reason for being. 
To provide a cool place for children to come and play. 
To fan with our leaves, the picnickers 
who come to eat on checkered tablecloths. 
These are all reasons for being."

"존재하기 위한 이유란다." 다니엘이 대답했다.
"다른 사람들에게 보다 많은 즐거움을 주는 것이 존재하는 이유야. 
그리고 더위를 피해서 집에서 나온
노인들에게 그늘을 만들어 주는 것도 존재하는 이유란다.
그리고 이 공원에서 뛰어 노는 어린이들을 위해
시원한 장소를 만들어 주는 것, 
체크무늬의 식탁보를 깔고 식사하러 오는 소풍객들이 
우리들 나뭇잎으로 부채질하는 것, 
이런 모든 것들이 우리가 존재하는 이유지."


Freddie especially liked the old people. 
They sat so quietly on the cool grass 
and hardly ever moved. 
They talked in whispers of times past. 

프레디는 특히 노인들을 좋아했다.
그들은 시원한 잔디위에 조용히 앉아 있었고 
언제나 거의 움직이지 않았다.
그리고 그들은 지나간 세월을 속삭이며 이야기했다.

Fall 15

The children were fun too, 
even though they sometimes tore holes in the bark of the tree, 
or carved their names into it. 
Still, it was fun to watch them move so fast 
and to laugh so much.

그들이 비록 나무껍질에 상처를 입히기도 하고
이름을 새기기도 하였지만 아이들도 역시 재미있었다.
그리고 아이들이 재빠르게 움직이고 끓임없이
웃어대는 것을 조용히 지켜보는 것도 즐거웠다.

But Freddie's summer soon passed. 

그러나 프레디의 여름은 순식간에 지나갔다.


It vanished on an October night. 
He had never felt it so cold. 
All the leaves shivered with the cold. 
They were coated with a thin layer of white, 
which quickly melted and left them dew drenched 
and sparkling in the morning sun.

여름은 시월의 어느 날 밤에 사라져버렸다.
그리고 그는 그렇게 심한 추위를 느껴 본적이 없었다.
모든 나뭇잎들이 추위에 떨었다.
그리고 그들은 금방 녹아버리는 하얀 얇은 막으로 덮였고
그것은 축축한 이슬이 되어 아침 햇살에 반짝거렸다.








Again it was Daniel who explained 
that they had experienced their first frost. 
The sign that it was fall and that winter would come soon.

그들이 첫서리를 경험했다고 설명해준 것도 역시 다니엘이었다.
그리고 이런 일은 지금이 가을이라는 것과 곧 겨울이
다가올 것을 나타내는 것이라고 다니엘은 말했다. 



Fall 16



Almost at once, the whole tree, 
in fact the whole park was transformed into a blaze of color. 
There was hardly a green leaf left. 
Alfred had turned a deep yellow. 
Ben had become a bright orange. 
Claire had become a blazing red, Daniel a deep purple, 
and Freddie was red and gold and blue. 
How beautiful they all looked. 
Freddie and his friends had made their tree a rainbow.

거의 동시에 모든 나무들이 단풍이 들어
공원은 찬란히 불타오르는 색깔로 뒤덮였다.
초록색을 유지하고 있는 나뭇잎은 거의 없었다.
알프레드는 짙은 노란색으로 물들었고 
벤은 선명한 오렌지 빛으로 물들기 시작했다.
클레어는 타오르는 듯한 붉은 색으로 물들기 시작했고
다니엘은 짙은 자줏빛으로 
그리고 프레디는 창백하게 
황금색이 나는 붉은 색으로 물들기 시작했다. 
그들 모두가 바라보기에 얼마나 아름다운지
프레디와 그의 친구들은 그들의 나무를 무지개로 만들었다.

"Why did we turn different colors," Freddie asked, 
"When we are all on the same tree?" 

"우리는 모두 같은 나무에 있는데 왜 각각 다른 색으로 변할까?" 
프레디가 물었다.









Fall 17



"Each of us is different. 
We have had different experiences. 
We have faced the sun differently. 
We have cast shade differently. 
Why should we not have different colors?" 
Daniel said matter-of-factly. 
Daniel told Freddie that this wonderful season was called fall.

""우리들은 서로 모두가 다르단다. 
우리는 서로 다른 경험을 했고
우리는 각자 다른 방향으로 태양을 마주 대했으며
우리는 각각 다른 그림자를 땅에 던졌단다.
그런데 어떻게 우리의 색깔이 다르지 않겠니?"
다니엘은 담담하게 말했다. 
그리고 다니엘은 프레디에게 가을은 멋진 계절이라고 말했다.



Fall 18



One day, a very strange thing happened. 
The same breezes that in the past had made them dance 
began to push and pull at their stems, 
almost as if they were angry. 
This caused some of the leaves to be torn from their branches 
and swept up in the wind, tossed about, 
and dropped softly to the ground.

그러던 어느 날 아주 이상한 일이 일어났다.
똑같은 바람이지만 지나간 계절의 바람과는 달리, 
마치 화가 난 것과 같이,
바람은 나뭇잎들을 가지에서 떼어놓으려는 듯 
밀고 당기기 시작했고 
나뭇잎들은 그 바람에 따라 춤을 추었다. 
그래서 몇몇 개의 나뭇잎들은 그들의 가지에서
떨어져 나와 바람에 휘날리며 하늘높이 솟아올랐다가
부드럽게 땅에 떨어졌다.


All the leaves became frightened. 

모든 나뭇잎들은 깜짝 놀랐다.


"What's happening?" they asked each other in whispers. 

"도대체 무슨 일이 일어난 거야?"하고
나뭇잎들은 서로 귓속말로 속삭이며 물어보았다.









Fall 19



"It's what happens in fall," Daniel told them. 
"It's the times for leaves to change their home. 
Some people call it to die." 

"이것은 가을에 일어나는 현상이란다." 하고 
다니엘이 나뭇잎들에게 말했다.
"이것은 우리가 살던 집을 바꾸어 떠날 시간이 된 것을 말하는 것이지.
어떤 사람들은 이것을 죽는 것이라고 말한단다." 



Fall 20



"Will we all die," Freddie asked. 

"우리도 모두 죽어야 하나요?" 프레디가 물었다.



"Yes," Daniel answered. 
"Everything dies. 
No matter how big or small, how weak or strong. 
We first do our job. 
We experience the sun and the moon, the wind and the rain. 
We learn to dance and to laugh. Then we die."

다니엘이 답했다. 
"그렇단다. 태어난 모든 것은 언젠가는 죽는단다.
그것이 아무리 크거나 작거나 강하거나 약하거나에 상관없이.
우리는 처음으로 우리의 일을 하게 되는 것이지.
우리는 그동안 태양과 달 그리고 바람과 비를 몸으로 느꼈고 
춤추는 것과 웃는 것을 배웠단다. 
그리고 이제 우리는 죽게 되는 것이지."

"I won't die!" Freddie said, with determination. 
"Will you Daniel?" 

"나는 죽지 않을거야!"하고 프레디가 단호하게 말했다.
"다니엘 너도 죽게 되니?"


"Yes," answered Daniel, "When it's my time." 

"그렇단다." 하고 다니엘이 대답했다. "나의 때가 되면."


"When is that?" Asked Freddie. 

"그 때가 언제인데?"하고 프레디가 물었다.



"No one knows for sure." Daniel responded.

"확실한 것은 아무도 몰라." 하고 다니엘이 응답했다.



Fall 21



Freddie noticed that the other leaves continued to fall. 
He thought, "it must be their time." 
He saw that some of the leaves lashed back 
at the wind before they fell, 
others simply let go and dropped quietly. 

프레디는 다른 나뭇잎이 계속 떨어지는 것을
유심히 지켜보았다.
그리고 그는 "그들이 시간이 되었구나."하고 생각했다.
그리고 프레디는 몇몇의 나뭇잎들은 
그들이 떨어져 나가기 전에 심하게 흔드는 바람속에서도
단단히 붙어 있는 것을 보았고,
어떤 나뭇잎들은 아주 간단히 가지에서 떨어져
조용히 땅으로 내려앉는 것을 보았다.

Soon the tree was almost bare.

나무는 이내 거의 벌거벗게 되었다. 


"I'm afraid to die." Freddie told Daniel. 
"I don't know what's down there." 

"나는 죽는 것이 무서워."하고 프레디가 다니엘에게 말했다.
"내가 떨어져 죽게되면 그곳에 무엇이 있는지 모르겠어." 


"We all fear what we don't know, Freddie, it's natural." 
Daniel reassured him. 
"Yet you were not afraid when spring became summer. 
You were not afraid when summer became fall. 
They were natural changes. 
Why should you be afraid of the season of death?" 

"프레디야, 우리는 모두 우리가 모르는 것에 대해 두려워한단다.
그리고 그것은 자연스러운 것이란다." 하고 다니엘이 안심시켰다.
"하지만 너는 봄이 여름이 되었을 때도 두려워하지 않았고
여름이 가을이 되었을 때도 두려워하지 않았어.
그렇게 계절이 변화하는 것은 자연스러운 것이란다.
그런데 왜 너는 이 죽음의 계절을 두려워하지?"








Fall 22



"Does the tree die too?" Freddie asked. 

"나무도 역시 죽을까?" 프레디가 물었다.



Fall 23



"Someday. But there is something stronger than the tree. 
It is life. That lasts forever, and we’re all a part of life." 

"언젠가는. 그러나 나무보다 강한 그 무엇이 있단다.
그것은 생명이라고 하는 것이지. 
생명은 영원히 지속되며 우리 모두는 그 생명의 한 부분이란다."


"Where will we go when we die?" 

"우리가 죽으면 우리는 어디로 갈까?"


"No one knows for sure, that's the great mystery!" 

"어느 누구도 확실히 알지 못한단다. 
그리고 그것은 대단히 신비로운 것이지!" 

"Will we return in the spring?" 

"우리가 봄이 되면 다시 돌아올 수 있을까?"


"We may not, but life will." 

"그렇지 않을 거야. 하지만 삶은 그렇게 될거야."



"Then, what has been the reason for all this?" 
Freddie continued to question. 
"Why were we here at all if we are only to fall and die?" 

"그러면, 모든 것이 그렇게 되는 이유는 무엇일까?"
프레디는 계속해서 질문을 했다.
"그리고 만일 우리 모두가 단지 떨어져 죽기 위해서라면 
우리는 왜 여기에 있어야 하는 것일까?"
Fall 24



Daniel answered in his matter-of-fact way, 
"It's been about the sun and the moon. 
It's been about happy times together. 
It's been about the shade, and the old people, and the children. 
It's been about colors in the fall. 
It's been about seasons. Isn't that enough?"

다니엘은 여전히 담담하게 말했다.
"우리는 해와 달을 느꼈고 행복한 시간들을 함께 했단다.
우리는 그늘을 만들었고 노인들과 아이들을 만나보았지.
그리고 가을이 되어 색이 변했고 계절들을 경험했단다.
그렇다면 그것으로 충분하지 않겠니?"



Fall 25



That afternoon, in the golden light of dusk, Daniel let go. 
He fell effortlessly. He seemed to smile peacefully as he fell. 
"Goodbye for now, Freddie." He said.

그날 오후 황금빛 황혼이 내릴 때 다니엘은 떠나갔다.
그는 쉽게 떨어져 나갔다.
그리고 그가 떨어질 때 
그는 아주 평화로운 미소를 짓는 것 같았다.
"안녕 지금 이 순간이여, 그리고 프레디야, 안녕"
다니엘은 그렇게 말했다.














Winter 26



Then Freddie was alone. 
The only leaf left on his branch.

그리고 프레디는 혼자 남았다.
프레디는 그의 가지에 남아있는 마지막 나뭇잎이었다.

The first snow fell the following morning. 
It was soft, white, and gentle; but it was bitter cold. 
There was hardly any sun that day, 
and the day was very short. 
Freddie found himself losing his color, becoming brittle. 
It was constantly cold, 
and the snow weighed heavily upon him.

그 다음날 아침 첫눈이 내렸다.
눈은 부드럽고 하얗고 친절했지만 매우 차가웠다.
그리고 그 날은 햇빛을 보기가 어려웠고 낮이 매우 짧았다.
프레디는 자신이 색이 바래고 말라가고 있는 것을 알았다.
추위는 계속 되었고 눈은 프레디를 무겁게 짓눌렀다. 

At dawn, 
the wind came that took Freddie from his branch. 
It didn't hurt at all. 
He felt himself float quietly, gently, 
and softly downward.

동이 틀 무렵, 바람이 와서 프레디를 가지로부터 낚아챘다.
그것은 전혀 아프지 않았다.
프레디는 평온하고 부드럽게 날아서 
조용히 아래로 떨어져 내렸다.









Winter 29



As he fell, he saw the whole tree for the first time. 
How strong and firm it was! 
He was sure that it would live for a long time, 
and he knew that he had been a part of its life, 
and it made him proud.

떨어지면서 그는 처음으로 나무 전체를 볼 수 있었다.
아, 얼마나 튼튼하고 견실한 나무이던가!
프레디는 나무가 오랫동안 삶을 유지할 것이라고 확신하였다.
그리고 그는 자신이 그 나무가 가진 생명의 
일부분이었다는 것을 알았으며
그것은 그를 자랑스럽게 만들어 주었다.



Winter 30



Freddie landed on a clump of snow. 
It somehow felt soft, and even warm. 
In this new position he was more comfortable 
than he had ever been. 
He closed his eyes and fell asleep. 

프레디는 눈이 쌓인 수풀 덤불위에 내려앉았다.
그것은 부드럽고 그리고 따뜻하기까지 한 느낌이었다.
이 새로운 자리에서 프레디는 그 어느 곳보다 
안락함을 느꼈다.
그리고 그는 눈을 감고 서서히 잠들어갔다.








He did not know that spring would follow winter, 
and that the snow would melt into water. 
He did not know that what appeared 
to be his useless dried self would join with the water 
and serve to make the tree stronger. 
Most of all he did not know that there, asleep in the tree 
and the ground were already plans 
for new leaves in the spring.

프레디는 겨울을 이어 봄이 온다는 것도 몰랐고
눈이 녹아 물이 된다는 것도 몰랐다.
그리고 자신의 쓸모없고 말라비틀어진 몸이
물과 섞여 나무를 보다 튼튼하게 만든다는 사실도 몰랐다. 
그는 나무안에서 잠들어 그곳에서 일어나는 
모든 일들에 대해 전혀 알지 못했고
대지가 봄에 새로운 나뭇잎을 만들기 위해
이미 모든 준비를 하고 있다는 것도 몰랐다.
