1. Shareholders Meeting

off: [US] ① not as good as usual <ex> Sales figures for last year were a little off compared with those of the previous year. ② not correct or not right <ex> Our calculations were off.

net profit: the final profit that remains after taxes and all the other costs have been taken away (≠ gross profit) <ex> The net profit was up 16.3% last month.

※ In business and finance accounting, net profit is equal to the gross profit minus overheads minus interest payable plus/minus one off items for a given time period. A common synonym for “net profit” when discussing financial statements is the bottom line.

gross profit: the total profit before any tax or costs have been taken away <ex> We earned a gross profit of $5 million.

※ In accounting, Gross profit or sales profit is the difference between revenue and the cost of making a product or providing a service, before deducting overhead, payroll, taxation, and interest payments. Note that this is different than operating profit.

  - Net sales = Sales – Sales returns and allowances

※ A sport utility vehicle (SUV) is a generic marketing description for a vehicle similar to a station wagon but built on a light-truck chassis. Usually equipped with four-wheel drive for on or off-road ability, some SUVs include the towing capacity of a pickup truck with the passenger-carrying space of a minivan.

RV; recreational vehicle: [US] a large vehicle, usually with cooking equipment and beds in it, that a family can use for travelling or camping <ex> A group of RVs were pulled over on the side of the highway.

※ In North American English the term recreational vehicle, and its acronym RV, are generally used to refer to an enclosed piece of equipment dually used as both a vehicle and a temporary travel home. They are also called motor home and motor caravan (or motorhome and motorcaravan). RVs are intended for everything from brief leisure activities such as vacations and camping, to full-time living. RVs can also be rented in most major cities and tourist areas.

3. Inauguration

D.C.: the abbreviation of District of Columbia in the US

The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an Act of Congress in 1871 effectively merged the City and the Territory into a single entity called the District of Columbia. packed: extremely full of people <ex> The island was packed with tourists.

be packed like sardines: to be crowded tightly together in a small space <ex> The commuters were packed like sardines on the evening train.

packed solid: [informal] if shops, trains, buses etc are packed solid, they are full of people <ex> I recommend that you look for a smaller boating company because the larger boats are packed solid during the peak season.

charge: an official statement made by the police saying that they believe someone may be guilty of a crime <ex> The following morning, he was arrested on a charge of burglary.

homicide: [usually US] the crime of murder (≒ murder[usually UK]) <ex> The police arrived at the scene of the homicide.

4. Cold

hypothermia: a serious medical condition caused by extreme cold (≒ hyperthermia) <ex> In this current cold spell, many old people are dying, needless to say, of hypothermia.

spare tyre/key/battery etc: a tyre etc that you keep in addition to the ones you usually use, so that it is available if any of the ones you usually use becomes flat, gets lost etc <ex> Do you think you could put my spare tire on for me after work today?

crank up: ① [UK] to make a machine or a device function harder or at a greater level. <ex> Just crank up your hearing aid a peg or two. ② [US] to start a machine or a device (≒ start up) <ex> May's warm weather, which caused Americans to crank up their air conditioners. ③ [informal] to make the sound of something, especially music, louder (≒ turn up) <ex> He cranked up the volume to 11. ④ to increase something or make it more intense. <ex> The legal authorities cranked up the investigation.

inclement: [formal] inclement weather is unpleasantly cold, wet etc (≠ clement) <ex> Due to inclement weather all flights have been cancelled for the next twenty-four hours.
