일전짜리 동전 페니는 미국 화폐 중에서 가장 경시되는 단위입니다.

The penny has been called

the most despised unit of US currency.

페니가 땅바닥에 떨어져 있는 것을 보더라도

주우려고 하지 않는 사람들도 많이 있습니다.

Many people will not bother to pick up a one-cent coin

if they see it lying on the ground.

그러나 어떤 자선 단체들은 이 동전들이 모이면 큰 돈이 되는 것과

또 어린 아이들이 가장 후한 기부자라는 것을 알았습니다.

But some charities are finding

that pennies add up to significant sums,

and that children are generous givers.

한 관계자는 “조그만 기부가 거대한 성과를 이룹니다.”라고 말했습니다.

As one participant said,

“Small contributions can make a huge difference.”

성경에 나오는 다윗과 골리앗의 이야기는 겉으로는 보잘 것 없어 보이지만

하나님을 굳게 신뢰하는 사람이

주위의 어떤 힘센 사람보다도 더 위대하다는 것을 보여주고 있습니다.

The Bible account of David and Goliath describes

a seemingly insignificant person

whose confidence in God was greater

than any of the powerful people around him.

다윗이 거인 골리앗을 상대하겠다고 나섰을 때 사울왕은

“네가 가서 저 블레셋 사람과 싸우기에 능치 못하리니”라고 말했습니다(삼상 17:33).

When David volunteered to face the giant Goliath, King Saul said,

“You are not able to go against this Philistine”.

그러나 다윗은 과거에 자기를 구해 내셨던

주님에 대한 믿음이 있었습니다(37절).

But David had faith in the Lord

who had delivered him in the past.


다윗은 저항하기 힘든 문제에 직면했을 때 느끼는

열등감과 무력감 같은 소위 “페니 증후군”에 시달리지 않았습니다.

David did not suffer from “the penny syndrome”

—a sense of inferiority and helplessness

in the face of an overwhelming problem.

만일 그가 사울의 비관적인 말이나 골리앗의 위협에 귀를 기울였다면

그는 아무 일도 못했을 것입니다.

If he had listened to the pessimism of Saul

or the threats of Goliath,

he would have done nothing.

도리어 그는 하나님을 신뢰했기 때문에

용감하게 행동했습니다.

Instead, he acted with courage

because he trusted God.

일조 달러의 재정 적자 시대에서 페니 동전 같다는 느낌을 갖기가 쉽습니다.

It’s easy to feel like a penny in a trillion-dollar deficit.

그러나 모든 상황에서 주님께 순종한다면

그 페니들이 모두 합산될 것입니다.

But when we obey the Lord in every circumstance,

it all adds up.

우리의 믿음의 행함들이 작든지 크든지 모여서 큰 성과를 이룹니다.

Collectively, our acts of faith,

large or small, make a big difference.

그리고 그 페니 하나하나가 중요합니다.

And every penny counts.

1 Samuel 17:32-37  

[삼상] 17:32	다윗이 사울에게 말했습니다. "용기를 잃은 사람이 있으면 안 됩니다. 왕의 종인 제가 나가서 저 블레셋 사람과 싸우겠습니다." David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him."
[삼상] 17:33	사울이 대답했습니다. "너는 저 블레셋 사람과 싸울 수 없다. 너는 아직 어린아이일 뿐이지만, 골리앗은 젊었을 때부터 싸움을 많이 해 온 뛰어난 군인이다." Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth."
[삼상] 17:34	그러나 다윗이 사울에게 말했습니다. "왕의 종인 저는 내 아버지의 양 떼를 지키던 사람입니다. 사자나 곰이 나타나서 양을 물어 가면, But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,
[삼상] 17:35	저는 그놈을 공격하여 그 입에서 양을 구해 냈습니다. 그놈이 저를 공격하면, 저는 그놈의 턱을 잡고 때려 죽이기도 하였습니다. I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.
[삼상] 17:36	왕의 종인 저는 사자와 곰도 죽였습니다. 할례받지 않은 블레셋 사람인 골리앗도 제가 죽인 사자나 곰과 같은 꼴이 될 것입니다. 왜냐하면 골리앗은 살아 계신 하나님의 군대를 욕했기 때문에 죽어야 합니다. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.
[삼상] 17:37	여호와께서는 나를 사자와 곰에게서 구해 주셨습니다. 여호와께서는 나를 이 블레셋 사람으로부터도 구해 주실 것입니다." 사울이 다윗에게 말했습니다.  "가거라. 여호와께서 너와 함께하시기를 빈다." The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you."

It matters not how large or small Your faith may seem to be; What really counts is whom you trust In life’s uncertainty. Courage will follow when faith takes the lead.

우리의 믿음이 얼마나 크든 얼마나 작든 상관없네 정말 중요한 것은 삶이 불확실할 때 누구를 신뢰하는가 이라네 믿음이 주도하면 용기가 뒤따른다.
