Alice's Feature Story
Everytime, I talk about body shapes with my friends, they always say, "I've gained a bit of weight. I should just stop eating all together." But, they have just average body shapes. Or, some of them are all skin and bones. Nowadays, when you watch TV, there are only skinny celebrities on it. And, a majority of Korean women think, size 44, according to research, is the object of envy. As a result, many women have suffered from serious eating disorders. Such a compulsive undereating or overeating drives women to death such as Luisel Ramos, Isabelle Caro and Yuri Kim.
I'd like to share the story of model Luisel Ramos with you. She was a promising and ambitious model from Uruguay. One day, her modeling agency provided the already skinny model with a fashion show in Montevideo, saying "You could make it big, if you lost a significant amount of weight." For three months, she ate nothing but lettuce and drank only Diet Coke in order to reach the elusive size zero. By the time the fashion show was around the corner, she had gone several weeks without eating. On the very day of the show, minutes after stepping off the catwalk, she ended up dying of heart failure during the fashion show.
When you first heard this story, what feelings and thoughts come to your mind? Of course, you felt sad at her regretable death. At the same time, you may think "Pitiful though it is, that's just the way the cookie crumbles in the modeling industry." "Models today are just as thin as the industry demands." Designers wanted to hire a slender figure. It is the best way for designers to show their clothes off. Models are mostly all the time gaunt-looking to beat their competition. So, you may presume "This horrible story only applies to the fashion field. It is unlikely to happen in our reality."
Is this true?? Well, let us see.
There was one Korean graduate job seeker in Seoul, who refused to be identified. Let us name us Amy. She thought she did not fare well in the interview because of her body figure. After considering plastic surgery seriously, she winded up getting weight-loss surgery. That way, she believed, is one of the most effective way to perform better in the job market. Could you guess which job market she went for? The job she was applying for had nothing to do with modeling industry but with teaching. As you all know, education in Korea is highly admired and respected simply because of knowledge based industry. Even Knowledge based industry places beauty among top priorities. It means appearance becomes the most important thing in society. Le't go back to the Amy's story, again. Before meeting her bright students in elementary school, while undergoing the weight-loss operation, she unfortunately died in a cold, dark operating room.
Where does that leave us in a social context?
Appearance, especially a silm figure, matters a lot even at the great expense of one's health. Behind this thin fetish is the relentless promotion of perfect body. TVs and Megazines painfully force women to have price in modern day. Price means, "Women should strive for the physical perfection. Perfect body is flat belly, tiny butt and silm waist. These are the only standards of beauty." Furthermore, they say "the connection between the thin physique, happiness, power and success are inextricably linked." I couldn't figure out what the logic goes here. But that is what they say. Front covers on magazines and tvs tell us all about diets and exercise regimes. It makes women feel the constant stress and anxiety of not being attractive and fashionable. Then comes the problem of distorting body image.
