문학작품 속의 영어표현 (6) : Hawthorne의 주홍글씨(The Scarlet Letter)

미국의 대표적인 소설가인 Nathaniel Hawthorne(1804-1864)은 매사추세츠주 Salem 출신으로 선장(船長)의 아들로 태어났다. 17세기 미국에 정착한 청교도(淸敎徒)의 후예인 호손은 자연스레 청교도의 사상·생활태도에 깊은 관심을 가지고 많은 작품을 썼다. 1825년 Bowdoin College를 졸업한 후, 소설가로 성공하기로 작정하고 작품을 계속 쓰다가 1837년 단편집 《Twice-Told Tales 트와이스톨드테일스》를 발표했으며, 1839년 경제적 불안정에서 벗어나기 위하여 보스턴 세관(The Custom House)에서 근무하였다. 그후 1850년 그의 대표작이 된 《The Scarlet Letter 주홍글씨》를 발표하였다. 이 작품은 17세기의 청교도 식민지 보스턴에서 일어난 한 간통사건에 관련된 사람들을 주요 등장인물들로 내세우면서 청교도의 엄격함을 교묘하게 묘사하고 죄인의 심리 추구, 긴밀한 세부구성, 정교한 상징주의를 보여줌으로써 19세기의 대표적 미국소설이 되었다. 그는 또한 1851년 청교도를 선조로 가진 고가(古家)의 자손에게 악의 저주가 내린다는 내용의 《일곱 박공의 집 The House of the Seven Gables》을 발표하였다. 그리고 1852년에는 자신이 참가했던 실험적 공동농장을 무대로 한 《블라이드데일 로맨스 Blithedale Romance》를 출판하여 지상낙원에 모인 사람들의 심리적 갈등을 그렸다. 이어서 1853년 자신의 대학동창인 친구 Franklin Pierce 대통령의 배려로 영국의 리버풀 영사(Consul)로 부임하였으며, 그 후 이탈리아를 여행하였다. 이 여행 뒤에 1860년 지성과 양심의 깨달음에 대한 경험을 적은《 대리석의 목신상 The Marble Faun 》을 집필하였다.

Hawthorne은 대체적으로 청교도주의를 비판하면서도 그 전통을 계승하여, 도덕적·종교적 죄악에 빠진 사람들이나 자기중심주의 혹은·고독에 사로잡힌 사람들의 내면생활을 도덕·종교·심리의 세 측면에서 대단히 상징적이고도 정밀하게  묘사하는 것에 중점을 두었다.

다음은 그의 작품 주홍글씨(The Scarlet Letter)에서 따온 것인데 이 장면 속에서 주인공 헤스터 프린(Hester Prynne)은 자신의 교구목사인 Arthur Dimmesdale 과 간통을 한 죄목으로 간통죄(Adultery)의 첫 글자인 ‘A’ 를 주홍색으로 가슴에 새긴 채 자신의 3개월된 사생아를 품에 안고 감옥에서 끌려 나와 Boston의 청교도 대중들 앞에서 공개적으로 수치를 당하게 되지만, 그녀는 불행과 수치의 모습이 아니라 오히려 아름다움과 품위의 모습을 보여줌으로써 모여든 군중들을 경악하게 만든다.

The door of the jail being flung open from within, there appeared, in the first place, like a black shadow emerging into sunshine, the grim and grisly presence of the town-beadle, with a sword by his side and his staff of office in his hand. This personage prefigured and represented in his aspect the whole dismal severity of the Puritanic code of law, which it was his business to administer in its final and closest application to the offender. Stretching forth the official staff in his left hand, he laid his right upon the shoulder of a young woman, whom he thus drew forward until, on the threshold of the prison-door, she repelled him, by an action marked with natural dignity and force of character, and stepped into the open air, as if by her own free-will. She bore in her arms a child, a baby of some three months old, who winked and turned aside its little face from the too vivid light of day; because its existence, heretofore, had brought it acquainted only with the gray twilight of a dungeon, or other darksome apartment of the prison.

감옥 문이 안으로부터 젖혀져 열리면서 먼저 햇볕 속으로 검은 그림자가 나타나듯이 옆에는 칼을 차고 손에는 공직지팡이를 든 험상궂게 생기고 섬뜩한 느낌을 주는 마을의 하급관리가 등장했다. 이 인물은 그의 모습 속에 청교도율법의 차가운 가혹성 모두를 미리 보여주고 또한 대표하고 있었는데, 그 율법을 위반자에게 최종적으로 그리고 가장 가깝게 적용하는 일이 그의 몫이었다. 왼손에 든 공직지팡이를 앞으로 뻗으면서 그의 오른 손을 한 젊은 여자의 어깨에 얹었는데 그 손으로 그는 그녀를 감옥 문지방 위에서 그녀가 자연스런 품위와 인격의 힘으로 그를 내치고는 마치 자신의 자유의지로 그런 것처럼 밖으로 나설 때까지 그녀를 끌고 나왔다.  그녀는 두 팔에 아기를 안고 있었는데 그 아기는 약 3개월쯤 된 아기였는데, 그 아기는 눈을 깜박이면서 너무나 생생한 낮의 빛으로부터 그 작은 얼굴을 돌렸다. 아이는 여태껏 지하감옥의 회색 흐린 빛 혹은 감옥의 어두운 감방에 익숙해졌기 때문이었다.

When the young woman—the mother of this child—stood fully revealed before the crowd, it seemed to be her first impulse to clasp the infant closely to her bosom; not so much by an impulse of motherly affection, as that she might thereby conceal a certain token, which was wrought or fastened into her dress. In a moment, however, wisely judging that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another, she took the baby on her arm, and, with a burning blush, and yet a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her townspeople and neighbours. On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A. It was so artistically done, and with so much fertility and gorgeous luxuriance of fancy, that it had all the effect of a last and fitting decoration to the apparel which she wore; and which was of a splendor in accordance with the taste of the age, but greatly beyond what was allowed by the sumptuary regulations of the colony.

그 젊은 여자 – 이 아이의 어머니 – 는 완전히 군중들 앞에 모습을 드러냈을 때 아이를 그녀의 가슴에 꼭 껴안는 것이 그녀의 첫 번째 본능인 것처럼 보였다.  그것은 어머니로서의 애정본능이라기 보다는 그녀의 옷에 새겨지거나 혹은 들러붙은 어떤 징표를 감추려는 본능인 것처럼 보였다. 그러나, 잠시 후에 그녀의 수치의 징표 하나가 또 다른 수치의 징표를 감추기에는 어색하다고 현명하게 판단하고서는 그녀는 아이를 팔에 안고 새빨갛게 얼굴을 붉히면서 또한 오만한 미소를 지으며 부끄러움을 타지 않을 시선을 가지고 그녀의 마을사람들과 이웃들을 둘러 보았다. 그녀가 입은 가운의 가슴팍에 고운 붉은 천으로 정교한 자수가 둘러져 있었는데 그곳에는 금색실로 아주 찬란하게 A 라는 글자가 새겨져 있었다. 그것은 아주 예술적으로 만들어졌고 또 풍성함과 아주 훌륭한 상상력이 넘쳐나서 그녀가 입고 있는 옷에 최종적이고도 안성맞춤인 모든 장식효과를 주었다. 그것은 시대의 취향에 걸맞는 황홀한 모습이었으나 이는 뉴잉글랜드 식민지의 사치금지규정에 의해 허용되는 범위를 크게 넘어서는 것이었다.

The young woman was tall, with a figure of perfect elegance, on a large scale. She had dark and abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam, and a face which, besides being beautiful from regularity of feature and richness of complexion, had the impressiveness belonging to a marked brow and deep black eyes. She was lady-like, too, after the manner of the feminine gentility of those days; characterized by a certain state and dignity, rather than by the delicate, evanescent, and indescribable grace, which is now recognized as its indication. And never had Hester Prynne appeared more lady-like, in the antique interpretation of the term, than as she issued from the prison. Those who had before known her, and had expected to behold her dimmed and obscured by a disastrous cloud, were astonished, and even startled, to perceive how her beauty shone out, and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy in which she was enveloped.

그 젊은 여자는 키가 크고 큰 체구에 완벽한 품위를 가진 인물이었다. 그녀는 검고 풍부한 머리칼을 지녔는데, 그 머리칼이 매우 윤기가 흘러서 햇볕을 광채로서 튕겨냈고, 그녀의 얼굴은 그 반듯함과 풍부함에서 나오는 아름다움 외에도 뚜렷한 이마와 깊고 검은 눈이 가지는 깊은 인상을 지니고 있었다.  그녀는 또한 지금 순간적으로 엿보이는 연약하고 일순간적이며 표현할 수 없는 우아함이 아닌, 그 시대의 여성적인 고상함을 쫓아간 어떤 위엄과 품위를 가지고 있는 숙녀답기도 했다.  숙녀다움의 고전적인 의미해석에 의한다 하더라도 헤스터 프린이 지금처럼 숙녀다운 적은 일찌기 없었다. 그녀를 이전에 알았던 사람들과 그녀가 재난적인 구름(불행)에 의해 흐려지고 어두워진 모습을 보기를 기대했던 사람들은 그녀의 현재 모습을 보고 놀랐고, 그녀의 아름다움이 두드러지게 빛나고 또 그 아름다움이 그녀를 감싼 불행과 수치 위에 후광으로 빛나는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다.
