전쟁으로 안팎이 어수선하다 보니,

봄이 왔어도 봄 인사를 드리기가 조심스러웠습니다.

그러다가 문득

봄 인사도 드리지 못한 채,

봄이 지나가 버릴 것같은 생각이 들었습니다.

그래서 오늘은 봄 인사 대신,

마음을 잠시 쉬게 해 줄,

한국 가곡 한 곡을 소개하려고 합니다.

오늘 소개하는 노래는

이은상 시, 홍난파 작곡의 한국 가곡 <봄처녀>입니다.

어느 날 어여쁜 봄처녀가

집 앞을 지나간다면,

여러분은 어떻게 하시겠습니까?

이 노래에서 시인은 봄을,

결혼을 위해 사랑하는 님을 찾아온,

예쁘고 순수한 처녀로 묘사하고 있습니다.

노래 속에 나오는 화자는

지나가는 그 봄처녀를 바라보며,

혹시 그녀가 자기에게 오는 것이 아닐까 하고,

가슴 졸이며 바라보고 있습니다.

부끄럽지만,

Introducing the Korean Art Song [Spring Maiden]

Even though spring has arrived,

the world around us feels unsettled by war,

and it has been difficult to greet the season with joy.

At times, it even seemed as though spring might pass us by

without a proper welcome.

So today, instead of a long greeting,

I would like to share a Korean art song

that offers a moment of rest for the heart.

The piece I introduce is Spring Maiden (Bom Cheonyeo),

written in the 1932 with lyrics by Lee Eun-sang and music by Hong Nan-pa.

This was a time when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule,

and the song carries both innocence and quiet yearning.

Imagine: if a lovely maiden of spring were to pass by your doorstep,

               how would you respond?

In this song,

the poet personifies spring as a pure young maiden,

arriving like a bride-to-be seeking her beloved.

The narrator gazes at her shyly,

wondering if she might be coming to him,

hesitating with a tender thought—“Should I go out and ask?”

This gentle hesitation makes the song all the more endearing.

Beyond its romantic imagery,

the poet’s longing for the maiden reflects a deeper hope:

the yearning for national independence and a brighter future.
