1. Heavy Qian Hexagram(Qian Hexagram repeated) ䷀ ......6
▣ Nine in the fifth place :
"A flying dragon in the sky. It is advantageous to see the great person."
[Interpretation]
[Nine in the fifth line] means that since a flying dragon is in the sky,
it is beneficial to meet a great person.
[Explanation]
First, let us listen to the memorial submitted through Owi-gwigam
by Seok Ji-hyeong (pen name : Suhyeon) :
"I have respectfully examined[the hexagram].
In the Qian Hexagram, Nine at the fifth position regards the flying dragon
as the symbol of the monarch; hence, the benefit lies in seeing the great person below.
9 is the number of Yang, and 5is the position of Yang.
The dragon is an embodiment of Yang, and because it flies in the sky,
it symbolizes the ruler.
To a monarch, a loyal minister is like clouds to a dragon.
Without obtaining such minisrers, there is no way to manifest divine power―
which is why 'seeing[The great person]' is considered beneficial.
Now, Your Majesty is already a soaring dragon, yet there is no one acting as your clouds.
You are like a dragon that cannot fly over the realm nor summon the clouds.
Although there are subjects who possess the talent to summon clouds,
Ifear Your Majesty might fail to seek them out.
Ah! The rising of clouds occurs only within the intimate resonance between Yin and Yang;
it does not necessarily abide in famous mountains and great rivers where all can hear.
I humbly pray that Your Majesty seel the ways of resonace that are not bound
to a single fixed pattern."
Suhyeon[Seok ji- hyeong] noted that even if a monarch possesses the ability
of a flying dragon in the sky, without loyal ministers acting as clouds to assist him,
he is like a drgon that can neither rule the realm nor draw the hearts of the people.
Furthemore, even if ministers possess the extraordinary talent to summon clouds,
a foolish king might fail to seek them out.
This emphasizes that a monarch must have the discernment and wisdom
to employ capable individuals.
Reaching[Nine at the fifth position], the dragon finally becomes
a soaring dragon(Feilong / 飛龍,비룡) that freely flies across the long-desired sky.
The hidden dragon(Qianlong / 潛㡣,잠룡), which had been submerged in the water
building its strenght, now takes flight in the sky to undertake the great take
of bringing order to the universe.
Yet, what does it mean when it says to meet a great person(Daren / 大人,대인) here?
Regarding the Duke of Zhou′s line commentary(Yaoci)―"Even if a flying dragon is in the sky,
it is advantageous to see a great person"―Confucius sade: "A flying dragon in the sky
represents the creation / transformation of a great person(Daren zao ye),
the proper way of a ruler(Shang chi ye), and a position that enjoys
Heavenly Virtue(Nai wei hu tiande)."
He noted that "seeing the great person"(Jian daren) is a necessary and suffcient
condition to reach this position.
This aligns with Seok Ji-hyeong′s words : "To a monarch ,
a minister is like clouds to a dragon; without obtaining them,
there is no way to manifest divine efficacy and power."
Blessed people meet a blessed ruler.
In terms of worldly affairs, [Nine at the fifth position] can be seen as the position
of a monarch, an exalted person, a father, or a chairman.
However, scholars like Su Dongpo argue that a "flying dragon"(Feilong) refers to
"one who previously lived in seclusion, and anyone can become
a great person(Daren) like a fiying dragon."
In historical allusions, this is also viewed as the moment Yi Yin met King Tang
of the Shang dynasty, or when Jiang Ziya(Taigong Wang) met King Wen of Zhou.
In the Wenyan Zhuan(Commentary on the Words of the Text),
Confucius asks himself, "What is the meaning of 'A flying dragon in the sky;
it is advantageous to see a great person'(He wei ye)?"
and provides the ultimate brilliant answer:
"Notes of the same tone respond to eeach other(Tong sheng xiang ying),
Things of the same nature seek each other out(Tong qi xiang qiu),
Water flowss toward dampness(Shui liu shi),
Fire moves toward what is dry(Huo jiu zao),
Clouds follow the dragon to bring rain(Yun cong long),
The wind follows the tiger as it leaps(Feng cong hu),
Is this not precisely how the flying dragon seeks out itss own kind(Lei lei)
to ensure the peace and prosperity of the nation and its people?"
Dryness and moisture do not consciously wait for fire and water,
yet water and fire naturally move toward moist and dry places, respectively.....
Dragonns and tigers do not seek clouds and wind,
yet wind and clouds respond to tigers and dragons.
Likewise, a Sage does not fixate their intention on creation,
yet all creations desire to meet the Sage.
Thus, when a Sage appears, "all creations respond and look up
toprise him[作而萬物覩,작이만물도]," and "That whicch has its root in the Heaven aligne
with what is above[本乎天者親上,본호천자친상]," and "That which has its root in the Earth aligns with what is below [本乎地者親下,본호지자친하]."
This means that "each kind follows its own category and excchangs energy
This illustrates the transition from Qian( Qian Hexagram-
to Dayou(Da You Hexagram - 大有卦,대유괘).
Confucius′s Explanation of the "Great Man"(夫大人者,부대인자) The interpretations of
"A fiying dragon in the heavens[飛龍在天,비룡재천]" are diverse.
Confucius gives a profound eplanation defining the "Flying Dragon" in Qian′s
fifth line as the "Great Man" :
"The Great Man aligns his virtues with Heaven and Eaeth[與天地合其德,여천지합기덕],
Aligns his brightness with the sun and moon[
Aligns his order with the four seasons[
Aligns his fortune and misforune with gods and spirits[
Preceding Heaven, Heaven does not contradict him [先天而天弗違,선천이천불위] ;
Following Heaven, he accords with the timing of Heaven[
If even Heaven does not contradict him, how much less would humans,
and how much less would gods and spirits?"
When one′s spiritual practice reaches the realm of "A flying dragon in the heavens,"
divine nature and human nature unite into one.
One becomes a person who understands heavenly principles, Prepares for them,
acts accordingly, and qualifies to be calles a "Great Man(見大人,견대인)."
A "great Man" ascends from an ordinary person[者,자] to an enilghtened human(人,인),
and ultimately to a :Great Man(大人,대인)."
Duch a person is a "Flying Dragon(飛龍,비룡)" holding the sacred wish- fulfilling
jewel(Cintamani).
This praise continues across ancient texts―such as Hoeyang′s Munjinbu(問津賦,문진부),
methods of dragon control, moral completion, law, agrarian culture, and royal lectures.
