Paul Washer is a calvinist. I believe He just doesn't use the term to label himself because of the academic/intellectual baggage it holds (notice how instead he chose to call himself a 5 point spurgeonist). Many calvinists do not believe in infant baptism. Infant baptism is not even a requirement to be a reformed believer. If any one person adheres to the absolute sovereignty of God and the doctrines of grace (TULIP), that person is a calvinist.

폴 워셔목사가 칼빈주의자이면서도 자신을 5-points 스펄전주의자라고 하는 것은, 칼빈주의와 침례교의 관계를 이해하실 필요가 있습니다. 침례교의 역사를 보면, 처음에는 칼빈주의자로 시작했습니다. 웨신에서 많은 부분을 취해서 런던침례교신조를 만듭니다. 침례와 교회정치부분만 제외하면 문자 그대로 동일하다고 할 수 있습니다. 칼빈주의를 그대로 담고 있다는 것입니다. 그런데, 19세기중반, 스펄전이 활동하던 시대에 침례교안에서 신학적으로 부패합니다. 알미니안주의자들이나 진화론주의자들의 사고방식들이 많이 침례교단 안에 들어옵니다. 이때 스펄존이 강하게 그들을 비판합니다. 그것을 down grade controversy라고 합니다.

 

이런 문제들에 대해서 이안 머레이가 Forgotten Spurgeon이라는 책을 썼는데, 그저 단순한 설교자가 아니고 스펄존은 신학자임을 부각시키고 있습니다. 아마도 폴워셔목사는 이러한 스펄존의 진면목을 잘 알고 있었을 것입니다. 유아세례를 반대하고 침례를 주장하면서도 여전히 자신을 칼빈주의를 신봉함을 나타내는 것이 파이브포인츠 스펄전니스트라는 표현입니다. 결론은, 자신은 칼빈주의자이다는 뜻이지요. 변승우가 이것을 알면 얼굴이 붉어져야 할텐데....붉어지기나 할랑가요

 

한국의 침례교도들은 이런 자신의 침례교의 전통을 잘 모르는 경우들이 있습니다. 이동원목사나 김장환목사가 침례교도라고 하지만, 이들은 칼빈주의자가 아니지요. 짬뽕신학이라고한 할까. 스펄존목사가 비판했던 모습들이 이들의 모습에서 보입니다.폴워셔목사도 이들을 비판할 것입니다

Hello.  I am writing on behalf of Brother Paul Washer.  Brother Paul was very grateful to receive your letter indicating how some of his teachings are being twisted in Korea.  I know he is grieved by this.  He has asked me to issue an official statement regarding Pastor Seung Woo Byun's theological position in relation to Paul's and HeartCry's.  I would love to do so, however, I haven't been able to find anything online regarding Pastor Byun's theology.  If you could point me to a website or recommend a book for me, that would be most helpful.  God bless and I look forward to hearing from you.
