1. The special investigation over Chae Sang-Byung passed the plenary session
The “Special Investigation Act on the Appointment of a Special Prosecutor to Obstruct the investigation of the Dead Marine and Cover Up the case” passed the plenary session of the National Assembly again, leading to the opposition party on the 4th.
It’s been the first time in 37 days since the bill, unilaterally passed by the opposition party, was rejected by the President's veto. However, the President’s office expressed the intention to exercise the veto again, and the atmosphere in the National Assembly froze.
The National Assembly people from the opposition party stopped the filibuster, which was neing carried out by the ruling party, after 26 hours by using a vote to end it in the plenary session on the same day.
The bill called the case of Chae Sang-Byung, passed with 189 votes in favor out of 190. This is the first bill to pass the plenary session since the start of the 22nd National Assembly. The lawmakers from the ruling party walked out in protest against the forced conclusion of the filibuster and the push for the bill. Only An Cheol-Su and Kim Jae-Seop, lawmakers from the ruling party, remained in the session, casting votes in favor and against, respectively.
Ahead of passing the bill, the Democratic party brought the bill to the floor again the bill as the first issue on the party platform on May 30th, the first day of the 22nd National Assembly. it had been two days since the original bill was rejected after the final re-voting in the plenary session of the 21st National Assembly.
The president will be able to exercise the veto on the bill again. “we deplore the shameful infringement of the history of our Constitution.” The president’s office said on the same day after the bill passed.
2. K-Chicken appears in New York's Times Square
"When will our BBQ be able to advertise in this center of the world economy?"
In 2007, Hong-Geun Yoon, Chairman of Genesis BBQ, visited Times Square in New York City and sighed as he looked at the outdoor advertisements. Chairman Yoon dreamed of seeing BBQ's name on the Times Square billboards, dominated by global brands like McDonald's and Coca-Cola, and this dream became a reality 17 years later. Genesis BBQ announced on the 4th that it would start an advertising campaign in Times Square, New York.
Since July 1st, BBQ has been broadcasting advertisements on the One Times Square electronic billboard in the center of Times Square, and this will continue until August 4th. The advertisement consists of three 15-second videos shown every 5 minutes for 45 seconds, totaling approximately 126 hours over about five weeks.
With an average daily foot traffic of about 360,000 and annual visitors of 50 million, BBQ plans to further promote the globalization of K-food by advertising in New York's Times Square. A representative from Genesis BBQ stated, "Through three advertisements emphasizing 'Korean-style chicken' and 'crispiness,' we will introduce the representative brand of K-chicken, BBQ, to the world."
