Questions linger over Terunofuji's health ahead of year's first tournament

During the Yokozuna Deliberation Council (YDC) soken practice session at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo on Monday, it was hard to avoid reminders that, in the words of Rocky Balboa, “Time is undefeated.”

In the first bit of serious sumo business of 2025, Terunofuji’s latent power but physical decline was on full display, as was the continuing ascent of a trio of ozeki who are vying to take his spot at the top of the sport.

The yokozuna, who has missed the past two tournaments because of injury, participated in only seven bouts in front of the YDC and assembled media.

Onosato was Terunofuji’s sole opponent, and the 33-year-old grand champion managed to win just three times against sumo’s rising star, and needed a break to get his legs worked on after only five bouts.

Of course, in a regular tournament there is just one fight each day, so Terunofuji’s lack of stamina won’t be an issue should he participate in the year’s first meet — which gets underway Sunday.

In fact, if history is any indication, Terunofuji, though well past his best days, will still be among the title favorites, as he has shown on more than once occasion he has the ability to dominate after a long layoff.

While Terunofuji battles to get the most out of whatever remains of his aging and injury-wracked body, Onosato appears to be the front-runner to eventually replace him at the top of the banzuke (rankings list).

However, the sport’s newest ozeki, despite his exalted rank and rapidly growing collection of silverware, hasn’t yet developed the aura needed of his position. Observing Onosato deferentially interacting with lower ranked but older rikishi at the soken, it was obvious he still hasn’t gotten used to the fact that he is now on a different plane to those men.

Should he, as expected, attain the rank of yokozuna in the near future, a change in demeanor will likely soon follow.

For the time being, outside the ring Onosato remains convivial with the media and willing to accommodate. The ozeki patiently and genially answered every question asked of him, even if the boilerplate answers were straight out of his stablemaster’s (former ozeki Kisenosato) playbook when that man was active.

Regardless of the question, the 24-year-old managed to stick to the theme of taking it one day at a time and ensuring he was properly preparing for the 15-day grind that gets underway Sunday.

Inside the ring, however, Onosato is far more assertive. As well as getting the better of Terunofuji the hulking former collegiate sumo star, dominated early against Kotozakura and went blow for blow with Hoshoryu before fading slightly at the end of the session.

Some weaknesses still remain — Onosato’s occasional tendency to leave his feet behind him when making a second effort after being stopped from driving forward was exploited more than once by Hoshoryu, but even in such situations the Nishonoseki stable man showed an ability to adjust on the fly and make quick corrections.

It was no surprise that Hoshoryu was the opponent to give Onosato the most problems at the YDC practice. The Mongolian-born ozeki has been arguably his toughest opponent since Onosato turned pro, and Hoshoryu was in fine form throughout the day.

If predictions were just to be made on the basis of performances at the soken alone, then Hoshoryu would appear to be a good bet to avenge his final day loss in November, claim victory in January and perhaps earn promotion to yokozuna.

Kotozakura — the man who defeated Hoshoryu in Kyushu two months ago — looked well off the pace at Kokugikan, struggling to handle everything his fellow ozeki threw at him.

On the opposite end of the scale to Terunofuji’s limited showing at the YDC practice was former ozeki Kirishima, who participated in 19 bouts against a range of makuuchi veterans including Hiradoumi, Tobizaru, Abi, Ura, Oho and Daieisho.

2024 was a roller coaster ride for Kirishima, with the veteran experiencing multiple tournaments with either double-digit wins, or double-digit losses.

Kirishima won 12 of his practice bouts and showed good energy and aggressiveness with less than a week to go to the hatsu basho.

His 6-9 showing in the last tournament of 2024 means it’s a long road back to ozeki for the veteran, but still just 28, a return to sumo’s second highest rank at some stage can’t be ruled out.

The changing of the times was visible outside the ring at the soken as well with Japan Sumo Association staff members sporting new jackets emblazoned with the logo of apparel designer and retailer Uniqlo — the result of a new partnership with the Japanese apparel designer and retailer.

In addition to having a much better fit and cut than the older lighter blue windbreakers, the JSA’s new jackets contain a vent slit at the back, easier sleeves to roll up, and a new logo on the collar marking the association’s 100-year anniversary.

Though ostensibly practical workwear, the Uniqlo jackets were such a striking upgrade that numerous people, both at Kokugikan and online, were enquiring over whether they would be on general sale.

Changes inside the ring and outside are already apparent in sumo’s first get together of 2025. The upcoming year promises to be one that sees the sport’s landscape look very different in 12 months’ time.
