[TOPIC 01] More Chinese Buy Land in Korea
Chinese people are rushing to Korea to buy real estate. The government of Jeju Province has been inundated with phone calls from estate agents working for Chinese companies keen on investing here.
"At the moment, five to six Chinese businesses are seeking investment in Jeju," a provincial government official there said. The combined amount they want to invest is some W3 trillion (US$1=W1,146).
The interest is due to growing Chinese tourist numbers as Korean pop culture remains popular throughout Asia. The Korean government decided to grant permanent residence to representatives of Chinese firms or individuals who invest between US$500,000 and $10 million in some regions including Jeju and the ski resort of Pyeongchang in Gangwon Province.
According to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, foreigners owned 229.29 million sq. m of land, or 0.2 percent of Korea's entire land area, worth W32.3 trillion as of September this year.
The amount of land owned by Chinese soared from 2.32 million sq. m in late 2007 to 4.05 million sq. m in the third quarter of this year, more than double the average increase among foreigners.
Chinese investors bought a mere 65,000 sq. m of land worth W15.9 billion in the second quarter but a whopping 703,000 sq. m worth W70.8 billion in the third.
This was the second largest purchase of land after Americans, who bought 1.53 million sq. m of land during this period.
An estate agent said foreign tourists often ask about the possibility of buying small shops or a plot of land.
1. What do you think about the growing number of Chinese buying land in Korea? Is this news good or bad?
2. What do you think will happen if the number of foreigners living in your country increases?
3. What makes Korea a good place for property investment?
4. What are your thoughts on owning land and property in another country? If you could buy land and property outside Korea, where would it be, and why?
5. Are you interested in real estate investment? What's your opinion of the future prospect?
[TOPIC 02] Would you kill one person to let five live?
Would you kill someone if doing so was the only way to save the lives of five other people? A new study conducted by researchers at Michigan State University suggests you probably would.
The so-called "trolley problem" is a classic dilemma in moral philosophy. Here's the basic set up: A trolley is running out of control and is heading toward five people tied to the track. You are operating the trolley, and can choose to flip a switch that would divert it to another track, where, unfortunately, one person is tied down. Do you choose to flip the switch or do nothing?
"What we found is that the rule of 'Thou shalt not kill' can be overcome by considerations of the greater good," evolutionary psychologist Carlos David Navarrete, lead researcher on the project, said
"I think humans have an aversion to harming others that needs to be overridden by something," Dr. Navarrete said. "By rational thinking we can sometimes override it---by thinking about the people we will save, for example. But for some people, that increase in anxiety may be so overpowering that they don't make the utilitarian choice, the choice for the greater good."
1. What would you do if you were put in the same situation? Would you kill one person to let five live?
2. Do you agree that the rule of "Thou shalt not kill (You should not kill)" can be overcome for the greater good?
3. What if the situation is this: The one person is someone you know (a friend, relative), while the other five are complete strangers. Would you kill the person you know personally to let the five complete strangers live?
4. What would you think of the person who chooses to kill one to save more? What about the person who kills five strangers to save the one person important to him/her?
5. What do you think of the Utilitarian belief (the value of something depends on its usefulness)?
