Life Is the Sum of Our Choices
Everyone makes countless choices throughout life. Some choices may seem small at first, but they can lead us to unexpected experiences and help us discover who we really are. I believe that life is not determined by one big decision, but by the many choices we make every day. One of the experiences that taught me this lesson was participating in a science experiment club at school. Through this experience, I learned the importance of patience, responsibility, and the courage to try again, which also influenced my interest in the medical field.
When I first joined the club, I was excited to participate in different experiments, but I was also worried about making mistakes. One of our activities was synthesizing aspirin. I carefully followed the experimental procedure, expecting to obtain a successful result. However, our first attempt failed because we had not used enough acetic anhydride. I felt disappointed because I thought that all our preparation had been wasted. At that moment, I had to choose between giving up and trying again. Instead of blaming myself or my teammates, I decided to review the procedure and find the cause of the failure. We corrected the problem and successfully completed the experiment on our second attempt. Through this experience, I realized that failure is not the end of learning but the beginning of improvement.
This experience also taught me that successful scientific research requires patience and careful observation. Even a small mistake in measuring chemicals or following a procedure can affect the final result. I learned that it is important to examine each step carefully rather than simply expecting a good outcome. More importantly, I understood that making a mistake does not mean that I lack ability. What matters is whether I take responsibility for my actions and try to improve. This change in my attitude helped me become more willing to face difficult challenges instead of avoiding them.
As I became more interested in the medical field, I began to connect this lesson to healthcare. Medical professionals must make careful decisions because their actions can influence patients’ health and safety. For example, when preparing medication or checking a patient’s condition, they must pay attention to details and follow appropriate procedures. Neither scientific knowledge nor technical skill alone is enough to provide safe and effective care. Healthcare professionals also need responsibility, communication, and the ability to learn from their experiences. I believe that the habits I developed through scientific experiments can help me prepare for these responsibilities in the future.
Looking back, I am grateful that I chose to try again instead of giving up after our first failure. If I had stopped at that moment, I would not have learned as much from the experience. I now understand that every choice, whether successful or unsuccessful, can become an opportunity for growth. Whatever challenges I face, I want to approach them with patience, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. Whoever I work with in the future, I will respect their opinions and cooperate with them because teamwork is essential in healthcare. In addition, whichever path I choose in the medical field, I will remember that every decision can affect other people. In the future, I hope to become a healthcare professional who carefully considers each decision and takes responsibility for every action. Ultimately, life is the sum of our choices, and I will continue making thoughtful choices that bring me closer to my dream.
