The First Class of the New Semester

BOB: Welcome class! I’m handing out this semester’s syllabus. Please make sure you take one.

JESSICA: Oh, man! This syllabus is thick!

BOB: I hear complaining already. Don’t worry about it guys! It just contains detailed course information and assignments that you need to know throughout the semester!

Ok! It seems like everyone’s here! Before going over the syllabus, let me take the attendance first.  When I call your name, say ‘here’

Bob: Jessica

Jessica: Here!

A: 여러분 환영합니다! 이번 학기 강의 계획서 나눠 줄 텐데요. 꼭 하나씩 받으세요.

B: 아, 강의 계획서 진짜 두껍다!

A: 벌써부터 불평하는 소리가 들리는데요. 걱정 할 필요 없습니다. 이번 학기 동안 여러분이 알아야 수업 관련 내용과 과제물만 나와있는 거니까.
거의 다 온 것 같네요. 그럼 같이 강의 계획서 살펴보기 전에 먼저 출석을 부를게요. 제가 이름을 부르면 ‘네’라고 대답해주세요. 제시카!

B: 네!

새 학기 하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 게 뭔가요?

전 새로운 선생님, 친구, 그리고 첫 수업이 가장 먼저 떠올라요.

(=I’m giving out this semester’s syllabus.)

- hand 는 명사로 ‘손’이라는 뜻이 있고, 동사로는 ‘물건 등을 건네다, 건네 주다’는 뜻이 있습니다.
또 ‘Hand out’은, ‘Out’ ‘밖으로’, ‘ hand’ 건네주는 거니까 ‘나눠 주다’, ‘배포하다’는 뜻이 되죠. 그래서 ‘I’m handing out this semester’s syllabus.’ 하면 ‘이번 학기 syllabus 강의 계획서를 나눠 드립니다.’ 라는 뜻입니다. ‘~ 무엇 무엇을 나눠주다, 배포하다’는 뜻의 단어에는 ‘distribute’도 있는데요, 일반적인 대화에서는 ‘distribute’ 보다 ‘hand out’ 이나 ‘give out’ 또는 ‘pass out’을 더 많이 쓴다는 것도 알아두시면 좋을 것 같습니다.

▶ 명사 ‘Hand’와 관련된 영어 표현
- Please raise your hand if you have any question!
질문이 있는 사람은 손 들어 주세요!
- Can I hold your hand?
네 손을 좀 잡아도 되겠니?

▶ 동사 ‘Hand’와 관련된 영어 표현
- Please hand me the hammer from the tool box.
연장 통에 있는 망치 좀 건네 주세요.
- Could you hand me the salt? / Could you pass me the salt?
거기 소금 좀 건네주시겠어요?
* 미국 사람들은 주로 ‘Could you pass me the salt?’ 라고 말한다는 것도 알아두시면 좋을 것 같습니다.

▶ 동사 ‘Hand out’과 관련된 영어 표현
- The teacher handed out the worksheet to the class.
선생님이 학생들에게 연습 문제지를 나눠 줬다.

Will you hand out these class materials?
이 수업 자료를 좀 나눠 주시겠어요?

[참고] ‘Hand out’은 ‘pass something out directly’누군가에게 직접 무엇인가를 건네 줄 때 쓸 수 있는데요, 한 교실에 학생이 50 명 정도 된다고 하면, 한 학생에게 일일이 강의 계획서를 hand out할 수는 없잖아요. 그래서 보통 교수님이 맨 앞줄에 앉아 있는 학생에게 유인물을 hand out하면 맨 앞에 앉아 있는 학생이 하나를 받고 나머지 유인물은 뒤로 넘기는데요, ‘뒤로 넘겨 주다’ 영어로 ‘Pass something Over’라고 합니다.

PASS (something) OVER - to send something to someone farther down in a line of people. (Each person hands it to the next.)

Ex) Would you pass this paper over to Jane?
이 종이를 제인에게 좀 넘겨주시겠어요?

Would you pass the attendance sheet over to the person behind you?
출석표를 뒷사람에게 좀 넘겨 주시겠어요?

Can you pass it over to the next person?
이것 좀 다음 사람에게 넘겨 주시겠어요?

또 Hand out에서 전치사 ‘out’대신에 ‘in’ 이나 ‘over’, ‘down’이 오면 뜻이 또 달라지는 데요 하나씩 알아볼까요?

▶ Hand in: 서류 ‘document’나 보고서 ‘report’, 숙제 ‘assignment’등을 ‘제출하다’는 의미가 있습니다. Turn in 해도 같은 뜻이죠!

예를 들어 ‘보고서를 금요일까지 제출해 주세요!’ 영어로 하면, ‘please hand in your report by Friday’.할 수 있죠!

Ex) A: Did you turn in your papers on time?
숙제를 제 때 제출했나요?
B:Yup! I sure did, but there was a time when I did turn in my paper a day late. For each day it was late, the professor deducted 2 points.
네. 제 때 잘 내는 편이었지만, 딱 한번 과제물을 하루 늦게 낸 적이 있었어요. 하루 늦을 때 마다 교수님께서 2점씩 점수를 깎으셨던 기억이 납니다.

▶ Hand over: 권력 등을 위임 하다, 이양하다
- It’s time that you hand over your position to someone else.
이제 당신의 권력을 다른 사람에게 이양해야 할 시점입니다.

Are they going to hand over the captives?
- 그들은 그 포로를 넘겨 줄 건가요?

-Hand over those documents!
(vs Hand me those documents)
(= Pass me those documents!)
(=Give me those documents!)
- 그 서류들 좀 건네 주세요!

-After the Cold War, Kim Il-Sung handed over command of the Korean People’s Army to his son, Kim Jung-il.

▶ Hand down: ~ 무엇 무엇을 물려주다
-이 목걸이는 할머니께 물려 받은 겁니다
My grandmother handed this necklace down to me.
= This necklace is handed down to me from my grandmother.

[Hand 와 관련된 관용 표현]

- hand in hand: 손에 손 잡고
- My hands are tied.
My hands are tied, 말 그대로 해석하면, ‘내 손이 묶였다’는 말인데요, 문자 그대로 손이 묶였다는 말이 아니라, 손이 묶여 있는 것처럼 ‘내가 이 상황에서 아무것도 할 수 없다’는 말입니다. I’m not able to do whatever you’re asking me to do, 나에게 부탁하는 걸 어떤 것 도 들어줄 수 없다는 말인데요, it’s not because I don’t want to do but, because of certain rules or situation. 하기 싫어서가 아니라, 규정이나 법, 상황으로 인해 할 수 없다는 걸 의미하겠죠.

ex) I can’t do anything about it. My hands are tied.
난 아무것도 할 수 없어.

My hands are tied in this situation.
지금 이 상황에서 난 아무것도 할 수 없어요.

You know I would make a decision for you but my hands are tied.
제가 당신을 위해 결정을 내리고 싶지만 지금 그럴 수 있는 상황이 아닙니다.  

- My hands are full: 난 지금 너무 바빠요.
(= I have a lot of work to do. I’m very busy)

Ex) I’ll take you out next time. I have my hands full with work.
I have my hands full with obnoxious kids!

• Complain: 불평하다
- ~무엇 무엇에 대해 불평하다, 영어로는 ‘complain about something’하실 수 있습니다.

예를 들어 학생들이 강의 계획서에 대해 불평하고 있다, 영어로 하면, ‘Students are complaining about the syllabus.’할 수 있죠.

Ex) Stop complaining about how much work you have. Just do it!
일이 너무 많다고 불평하지 말고, 그냥 하세요!

Don’t complain about the professor or the class.
교수님이나 수업에 대해 불평하지 마세요!

• Hear/Listen
- Hear, Listen 모두 ~무엇 무엇을 듣다 는 뜻 있는데요, Hearing is simply the act of perceiving or recognizing sound by the ear. Use ‘hear’ when you mean that a sound comes to your ears.
즉 hear은 어떤 소리가 들리다, 할 때 쓸 수 있습니다. 즉 어떤 것을 들어야겠다고 생각하고 노력해서 듣는 게 아니라, 듣고 싶지 않아도 저절로 들리는 것을 말할 때 이 hear을 쓸 수 있습니다.

예를 들어 알아볼까요?
옆집 사람들이 싸우는 소리가 들려요. 영어로 하면, 내가 옆집 사람들이 싸우는 소리를 듣고 싶어서 듣는 게 아니라, 저절로 들리는 것 이기 때문에, ‘I hear my neighbors arguing/ I hear my next door neighbors arguing’할 수 있습니다.

또 ‘나 귀가 잘 안 들려’, 영어로는 My hearing is bad, I can’t hear well. I have trouble hearing.할 수 있죠!

반대로 listen은 어떤 것을 듣고 싶어 관심을 기울여 듣는 것을 의미할 때 쓸 수 있습니다. Listening, however, is something you consciously choose to do and pay close attention to.

I need to listen to the directions carefully, so please quiet down.
- 안내를 잘 들어야 하니까, 조용히 해주세요.

Pay attention and listen carefully to the directions.  
- 주의를 기울여 안내를 잘 들으세요.

• Before going over the syllabus, let me take the attendance first.
- Go over something 하면 ‘to look at something’ 즉 무엇인가를 살펴보다, 훑어 보다는 뜻이 있습니다.
여기서 go over는 look over, skim over 와 같은 표현으로 바꿔 쓰실 수도 있죠.
Before going over the syllabus, 강의 계획서 살펴 보기 전에 let me take the attendance first, 출석을 먼저 부르겠습니다, 라는 말인데요, 출석을 부르다, 영어로 take the attendance 입니다. 또 ‘go over the attendance’, ‘Let me call role’, ‘I’m going to call the role now’해도 같은 말이죠.

반대로, 결석하다, 영어로 ‘Be absent from class’라고 합니다. ‘Be absent from the class’는 주로 교수님께 미리 수업에 참석하지 못하는 이유를 말하고 결석하는 걸 말하고요, 사전에 수업에 오지 못한다고 이야기 하지 않고 그냥 빠지는 것은 영어로  ‘Skip the class’ 라고 합니다.
그래서 ‘나 어제 그냥 수업 안 갔어’, 영어로 ‘I skipped my class yesterday.’ 할 수 있죠.
