Optical birefringence is a critical factor which must be controlled in a
range of applications; from optical storage media and lenses to films.
Because of its aliphatic structure and the low optical anisotropy associated
with this type of structure, Topas COC has inherently low birefringence.
This material property is accompanied by a low stress-optical constant. Fig.
10 shows the effect of applied tensile strength on the birefringence of various
plastics.
The following table shows that the stress-optical constant of Topas COC is in
the same range as that for PMMA but only around one tenth of the value for PC.
The advantageous optical properties of Topas COC resin, combined with its
very low moisture absorption, high elastic modulus and the possibility of
tailoring flow make it especially suitable even for very thin optical storage
media. Very good molding accuracy
(pit replication) is attained.
