매년 미시간 주에 5월이 오면 나는 시계를 멈추게 하고 싶습니다.

Every year when May rolls around in Michigan,

I want to stop the clock.

연약한 싹들이 딱딱한 흙과 마른 나뭇가지를 뚫고

새 생명으로 솟아나는 것을 보는 것이 너무 즐겁습니다.

I rejoice when death is defeated

by fragile sprouts that refuse to be confined

by hardened clay and brittle branches.

몇 주가 지나면 벌거벗었던 들판이

향기로운 꽃무늬 옷을 입은 빛나는 나무숲으로 변합니다.

Over a few weeks, the naked landscape transforms

into fully clothed trees adorned by bright, fragrant flow-ers.

봄이 가져오는 경치, 소리, 향기에는 싫증이 날 줄 모릅니다.

I can’t get enough of the sights, sounds,

and scents of springtime.

시간이 딱 멈추었으면 좋겠습니다.

I want time to stop moving.

또 5월이 되면

나는 성경읽기 계획표에 따라 열왕기상을 읽습니다.

Also in May,

I come to 1 Kings in my Bible reading schedule.

10장에 이르게 되면 위와 같은 감정을 갖게 됩니다.

이야기를 거기서 멈추게 하고 싶어집니다.

When I get to chapter 10,

I have the same feeling: I want the story to stop.

이스라엘은 번영하고 있습니다.

The nation of Israel has bloomed.

솔로몬은 왕이 되어 하나님께서 거하실 처소를 지어

하나님의 찬란한 영광이 그곳에 임하셨습니다(8:11).

Solo-mon has become king and

has built a magnificent dwelling place for God,

who moved in with a blaze of glory (8:11).

드디어 올바른 왕 밑에서 통일이 되어 평화를 누리게 되었습니다.

Finally united under a righteous king,

they are at peace.

나는 해피엔딩을 좋아합니다!

 I love happy endings!

그러나 이야기는 거기서 끝나지 않습니다.

But the story doesn’t end there.

이야기가 계속되어 “솔로몬 왕은 이방의 많은 여인을 사랑하였고”(11:1),

“왕비들이 그 마음을 돌이켜 다른 신들을 좇게 하였습니다”(4절).

It continues: “But King Solomon loved many foreign women” (11:1),

and “his wives turned his heart after other gods” (v.4).

해마다 계절이 계속되는 것 같이 인생의 주기도 마찬가지입니다.

출생과 죽음, 성공과 실패, 죄와 고백 등과 같은 것 말입니다.

Just as the seasons of the year continue,

so do the cycles of life°™birth and death,

success and failure, sin and confession.

비록 우리가 좋은 시절이 계속되는 동안

그 시간을 멈추게 할 수는 없더라도,

어려운 시기도 결국에는 끝이 난다는

하나님의 약속 안에서 쉴 수 있습니다(계 21:4).

Although we have no power to stop the clock

while we’re enjoying good times,

we can rest in God’s promise

that even-tually all bad times will end (Rev. 21:4).

1 Kings 열왕기상 10:23-11:4

[왕상] 10:23	솔로몬은 이 세상의 어떤 왕보다 재산이 많았으며 뛰어난 지혜를 갖고 있었습니다. King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth.
[왕상] 10:24	모든 세상의 백성들이 솔로몬을 보고 싶어했습니다. 그들은 하나님께서 솔로몬에게 주신 지혜를 듣고 싶어했습니다. The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.
[왕상] 10:25	그래서 그들은 해마다 선물을 가지고 찾아왔습니다. 그들은 금이나 은으로 만든 물건들과 옷과 무기와 향료와 말과 노새를 가지고 찾아왔습니다. Year after year, everyone who came brought a gift--articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules.
[왕상] 10:26	솔로몬은 전차와 말을 많이 가지고 있었습니다. 솔로몬은 전차 천사백 대와 전차를 모는 사람 만 이천 명을 두고 있었습니다. 솔로몬은 그들을, 전차를 두는 성과 예루살렘에 두었습니다. Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem.
[왕상] 10:27	솔로몬이 왕으로 있는 동안, 예루살렘에서는 은이 돌처럼 흔했습니다. 그리고 백향목은 언덕에서 자라는 뽕나무처럼 흔했습니다. The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills.
[왕상] 10:28	솔로몬은 이집트와 길리기아에서 말을 수입했습니다. 말은 솔로몬의 무역업자들이 길리기아에서 값을 치르고 사 왔습니다. Solomon's horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue--the royal merchants purchased them from Kue.
[왕상] 10:29	이집트에서 들여오는 전차의 값은 한 대에 은 육백 세겔이었습니다. 그리고 말 한 마리의 값은 은 백오십 세겔이었습니다. 무역업자들은 전차와 말을 헷 사람과 아람 사람의 왕들에게도 팔았습니다. They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty. They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.

[왕상] 11:1	솔로몬 왕은 다른 여러 나라 여자들을 좋아했습니다. 솔로몬은 파라오의 딸을 좋아했을 뿐만 아니라 모압 여자, 암몬 여자, 에돔 여자, 시돈 여자, 헷 여자도 좋아했습니다. King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter--Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.
[왕상] 11:2	여호와께서 전에 이스라엘 백성에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. "너희는 다른 나라의 백성과 결혼하지 마라. 그들과 결혼하면, 그들이 너희의 마음을 돌려 놓아 너희가 그들의 우상을 섬기도록 만들 것이다." 그러나 솔로몬은 이 여자들과 사랑에 빠졌습니다. They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods." Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.
[왕상] 11:3	솔로몬은 칠백 명의 후궁과 삼백 명의 첩을 두었습니다. 솔로몬의 아내들은 솔로몬의 마음이 하나님으로부터 멀어지도록 만들었습니다. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray.
[왕상] 11:4	솔로몬이 늙어감에 따라, 그의 아내들은 그의 마음을 돌려 다른 우상들을 섬기게 했습니다. 솔로몬은 그의 아버지 다윗처럼 여호와를 참되게 섬기지 못했습니다. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been

Father, our days are filled with pleasures and struggles. We would like for life just to have the joys, but we know that’s not realistic in this sinful world. Help us to wait patiently for You to bring us Home. Amen. In good times and bad, God never changes.

아버지, 우리 날들은 기쁨과 고난으로 채워져 있습니다. 우리들은 기쁨만을 원하나 죄 많은 이 세상에서 그것이 가능하지 않다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 아버지께서 저희들을 천국으로 데려갈 때까지 참으며 기다리도록 도와주시옵소서. 아멘. 좋을 때나 어려울 때나 하나님은 결코 변치 않으신다.
