제 29회 환경의 날을 맞이하며

지구를 보호하는 손길

  우리가 숨 쉬는 공기, 마시는 물, 그리고 아름다운 자연은 결코 당연하게 주어진 것이 아닙니다. 매년 6월 5일은 우리가 살아가는 지구와 환경을 돌아보고, 자연과 더불어 살아가는 삶의 가치를 되새기는 '환경의 날'입니다. 환경의 날 하루만큼은 우리 일상을 잠시 돌아보며, 지구를 위한 작은 실천을 생각해보면 어떨까요?

1. 환경의 날의 유래

지구를 생각하는 세계 어린이들

  환경의 날은 1972년 스웨덴 스톡홀름에서 열린 유엔 인간환경회의를 계기로 제정되었습니다. 이후 유엔환경계획(UNEP)이 주관하여 전 세계가 함께 환경의 소중함을 생각하는 날로 이어져 오고 있습니다. 우리나라는 1996년부터 환경의 날을 법정기념일로 지정하여 기념하고 있으며, 올해로 제29회를 맞이합니다.

2. 올해의 주제와 주요 행사

환경의 날 기념 행사

  2026년 대한민국 환경의 날 주제는 "기후 행동으로 실현하는 녹색 대한민국", 표어는 "작은 실천이 큰 변화를 만듭니다"입니다. 올해는 서울 잠원한강공원에서 기념식과 함께 환경 유공자 포상, 시민 참여형 에코마켓, 다양한 체험 행사 등이 열릴 예정입니다. 또한 행사 현장은 온라인으로도 생중계되어 더 많은 국민들이 함께 참여할 수 있습니다. 환경 보호는 거창한 구호보다 생활 속 작은 실천에서 시작됩니다. 이번 행사가 자연을 아끼고, 더 나은 미래를 위해 다양한 아이디어를 나누는 뜻깊은 자리가 되기를 기대합니다.

3. 세계 환경의 날 소개

세계환경의 날 2026

  세계 환경의 날 역시 유엔환경계획(UNEP)의 주도로 전 세계에서 다양한 환경 캠페인과 실천 운동이 펼쳐집니다. 2026년 세계 환경의 날은 아제르바이잔의 수도 바쿠에서 개최되며, 올해의 주요 의제는 기후변화입니다. UNEP는 "#NowForClimate" 캠페인을 통해 정부, 기업, 시민 모두가 미래 세대를 위한 책임 있는 행동에 동참할 것을 제안하고 있습니다. 환경 문제는 특정 국가나 특정 세대만의 문제가 아닙니다. 우리가 살아가는 터전과 다음 세대의 삶의 질에 대한 문제이기에, 세계 각국이 함께 관심을 갖고 노력해야 하는 일입니다.

4. 함께 실천해요

환경 쓰레기를 청소하는 사람들

  환경의 날은 거창한 행동보다 작은 실천에서 시작됩니다. 텀블러 사용하기, 쓰레기 줄이기, 분리배출 실천하기, 에너지 절약하기, 대중교통 이용하기 등 일상 속 작은 선택들이 모여 큰 변화를 만들어 냅니다. 환경을 지키는 일은 특정한 정치적 입장이나 이념 문제가 아니라, 우리가 함께 살아갈 세상을 더 깨끗하고 건강하게 가꾸어 가는 일입니다. 환경의 날 하루, 우리 모두가 '지구를 위한 한 걸음'을 내딛는다면, 그것이 바로 환경의 날의 진정한 의미를 실천하는 일입니다. 우리의 작은 노력 하나로 미래 세대에게 더 푸른 지구를 물려줄 수 있습니다.

Every year on June 5, we observe Environment Day—a special occasion to reflect on our relationship with the Earth and to renew our commitment to living in harmony with nature. Today is an opportunity to pause for a moment, appreciate the world around us, and consider the small actions each of us can take to protect our planet.

1. The Origin of Environment Day

  Environment Day traces its roots to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. Since then, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has led global efforts to raise awareness about environmental protection and sustainable living. In South Korea, Environment Day has been observed as a national commemorative day since 1996. This year marks the 29th national celebration of the event.

2. This Year's Theme and Major Events in Korea

World Environment Day Celebration

  The theme of Korea's 2026 Environment Day is: "Building a Green Korea through Climate Action" with the slogan:

"Small Actions, Big Changes." To celebrate the occasion, a variety of events will be held at Jamwon Hangang Park in Seoul, including an official ceremony, environmental awards, eco-friendly exhibitions, community participation programs, and an Eco-Market. Many of these activities will also be available online, allowing people from across the country and around the world to join in. Protecting the environment begins not with grand gestures, but with small, meaningful actions in everyday life. We hope this year's celebration will inspire people to share ideas and work together toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.

3. World Environment Day 2026

World Environment Day 2026 – #NowForClimate

  World Environment Day is celebrated globally under the leadership of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

In 2026, the event will be hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, with climate change serving as the central focus of international discussions and initiatives. Through the global campaign #NowForClimate, UNEP encourages governments, businesses, communities, and individuals to take meaningful action for the future of our planet. Environmental challenges affect all of us. They transcend national borders, generations, and political perspectives. Protecting the Earth is a shared responsibility that helps ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.

4. Let's Take Action Together

People Cleaning Up Environmental Waste

  Making a difference does not always require extraordinary efforts. Using a reusable tumbler, reducing waste, recycling properly, conserving energy, and choosing public transportation are all simple actions that can contribute to meaningful change. Caring for the environment is not about politics or ideology. It is about preserving the world we share and leaving a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations. If each member of our community takes just one small step for the Earth today, we will already be honoring the true spirit of Environment Day. The small footprints we leave today can help create a greener world for tomorrow.
