6.Heaven and Water Hexagram : Song / Conflict.
▣ Nine at the 4th position : One cannot contend in litigation.
Returning and accepting fate, ahanging one's mine,
and remaining peacefully steadfast brings good fortune.
[Commentary]
Because a strong line(Yang) resides in a soft position(Yin) and is improper,
one loses in litigation [Cannot contend in litigation].
Therefore, if one quietly steps back, knows one's limits, abides by the Mandste of Heaven
[Returning and accepting fate], and returns to an attitude of compliance[Changing one's mind],
it will lead to peace and good fortune[Remaining peacefully steadfast brings good fortune].
The principle that "if l change, the other party changes, and the world changes"
applies universally to all things.
For this reason, the Yi(Book of Changes) is also referred to as Yi Di Si Zhi(thinking from
the other's perspective / empathy).
Confucius also stated regarding this : "One advances toward the Mandate once again.
When the situation changes, if one complies, changes one's mind, and stays peaceful,
one will not lose the Mandate[The lmage Commentary says : 'Returning and accepting fate,
changing one's mind, and remaining peacefully steadfast means not losing oneself']".
This teactes that, in principle, one must not engage in any litigation at all.
Here, too, because it transformed into the Feng Shui Huan(Wind Water Dispersion) Hexagram,
which seeks gentle compliance, it brings peace and good fortune.
Wang Bi also viewed it as good fortune, stating that if one follows original righteousness,
refrains from litigation, and turns toward reconciliation,
peace is attained and one does not lose the Way, thereby practicing benevolence(Ren).
"Benevolence originates from oneself, never frrom others."
This time, Dongpo's(Su Shi's) interpretation is clear and crisp :
"What line 4 should naturally obtain is [Initial Six] Since line 4 is close to line 3,
if it tries to forcibly seek line 3, it cannot win the lawsuit.
However, since is has line 1 (lnitial six) responding to it,
if line 4 steps back and advances only when it can obtain through the Mandate of Heaven,
correcting itself and settling in righteousness, it will not lose what it possesses."
Cheng Yi(Cheng Yi-chuan) also stated :
"Line 4 is strong(Yang) and improper, making it one who initiates litigation.
It inherits line 5, steps on line 3, and responds to [lnitial Six].
Since line 5 is the king, line 4 cannot contend in litigation against it.
Line 3 is below and weak(Yin), so line 4 thinks no one can rival it,
but even if it raises a dispute, it cannot win.
Suppressing the desire to force litigation, it gains the Mandate of Heaven,
changes its mind, and returns to its proper position."
Zhixu did not forget the legal statement that line 4 was able to attain the position
of Qian(Heaven) through the power of repentance,
successfully reaching a state of no fault and returning,
because it realized the profound essence of nature and destiny.
