[Lead-in] 1. In less then a week's time, the Euro will be making its debut in European shops. Portugal has found a novel way of preaching the virtues of the new single currency with a little help from on high. It's enrolled its clergy to spread the word...in the hope that will help smooth the transition from Escudo to Euro. Richard Quest has our report. [Story] 2. Father Silva is spreading a very different message at this meeting. For nearly a year he's been teaching his parishioners what will happen when the Portuguese Escudo disappears and is replaced by the Euro. Just days to the changeover and now he's able to show them what the new coins look and feel like. 3. Some of these women can't read or write. They are the ones most at risk from fraud and swindlers when the new currency is introduced. The Portuguese government figured the best way to get this message out was to ask for spiritual help and get the clergy to teach. 4. "It was because we felt the need to teach the parish, especially those most challenged, because it has happened already in other places that some are being taken advantage of. And we don't want any harm to come to them. We would like them to know properly what the Euro is when it comes into circulation and all those things about the Euro." 5. The new currency is admired and generally felt to be a good thing by young and old alike. Even those who may not have been further than the next village recognize it will bring Europe closer together. And now they've had spiritual help, they don't see too many problems. "It won’t be as difficult as it seems. It’s going to be a good thing. People who can't read or write may have problems but it’s going to be an easy change." 6. Rural Portugal has been well warned of the change about to happen. In Nisi, the older men enjoying the last rays of a winter's day and they've already had their lessons about the Euro. The priests have been busy indeed. 7. The decision by the Portuguese government to ask the priests for help... Well that really was a stroke of genius because in small villages like this there is probably no one more trusted. For the priest enrolled, of course, this could be something they soon regret. After all, come January 1st, when the people here are using the new coins there could be many more questions that could prove difficult to answer. Richard Quest, CNN, Nisi, Portugal. ###

"무지한 사람들이 이용당하거나 피해를 입는 경우가 많기 때문에 우리 교구민들에게 새로운 화폐에 대해 가르칠 필요가 있다고 생각했습니다. 앞으로 유통될 유로 화에 대해 교구민들에게 제대로 알리고 싶었습니다. " 5. 마을 주민들은 남녀노소를 불문하고 모두가 새 화폐에 대해 호의적인 반응을 보이고 있습니다. 유로 화가 유럽의 통합을 앞당길 것이라는 사실도 잘 알고 있었습니다. 이젠 신부님을 통해 영적인 도움까지 받았으니 유로 화의 도입에 대해 아무 문제 없다는 태도입니다. "별 문제 없을 것이라고 생각합니다. 글을 읽거나 쓸 줄 모르는 사람들은 다소 어려움을 겪겠지만 전환은 쉽게 이루어질 겁니다. " 6. 포르투갈의 농촌 주민들은 앞으로 일어날 변화에 대해 충분한 사전 교육을 받았습니다 . 여기서 햇볕을 쪼이고 있는 노인들도 이미 유로 화에 대한 교육을 수료했습니다. 모두 신부님들이 부지런히 뛰어다닌 덕분입니다. 7. 포르투갈 정부가 성직자들의 도움을 구하기로 결정한 것은 정말 천재적인 발상이었습니다. 이런 작은 마을에서는 성직자만큼 신뢰를 받는 인물도 없기 때문입니다. 하지만 정작 유로 화 홍보를 떠 안게 된 성직자들은 앞으로 골치 아픈 일들이 더 많을 것 같습니다. 내년 1월 1일부터 유로 화가 본격 유통되기 시작하면 답하기 힘든 질문들이 더 많이 쏟아져 들어올 게 분명하기 때문입니다. ###
