As of the 25th of January, it has been reported from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), that for last 24 hours the level of activity on the rootless shields is again low; a narrow flow may be advancing southward out of webcam view and a lava pond is within the TEB vent. The second DI (deflation-inflation) tilt event in a week is just coming to completion. Sulfur dioxide emission rates at the summit continued to be elevated. Based on the information summarised above, there continues to be a threat from lava flows to residents of Royal Gardens subdivision. The rootless shields are a little more than 2 miles uphill of the subdivision and lava is capable of advancing similar distances in a week. Hawai`i County Civil Defence has been notified and is taking appropriate measures. Increased sulfur dioxide emissions rates at the summit mean that SO 2 concentrations could reach hazardous levels during conditions other than strong trade winds. During weak wind conditions, people sensitive to this gas should avoid unmonitored areas in the south caldera (southwest rift zone, south caldera pullout, and the Halema`uma`u overlook parking lot) and stay informed about SO 2 concentrations in monitored areas (Jaggar Museum and Kilauea Visitor's Centre). Vent areas and lava channels are hazardous and conditions can change rapidly. Access to the 7/21 eruption site in the Kahauale`a Natural Area Reserve is closed. Wao Kele o Puna is also closed. Lava flows advancing through vegetation are hazardous and can produce fire and methane explosions that propel chunks of lava and rock several feet into the air. Last 24 hours at 7/21 eruption site: For the second night, incandescence from the rootless shields was minimal. The most intense activity was at the south base of the southeasternmost shield that may be feeding a flow advancing south out of view of the webcam. In addition, there was continuous incandescence from a lava pond within the TEB vent. The vent itself may be enlarging. Seismic tremor levels were at low values. An overflight is planned for tomorrow morning. Last 24 hours at Pu`u `O`o crater: There was no incandescence lasting more than 10 minutes within Pu`u `O`o crater overnight. The Pu`u `O`o tiltmeter responded to a DI (deflation-inflation) tilt event about 1-2 hours after the summit tiltmeters recorded the event; the inflation signal almost exactly correlated with an increase in rainfall making determination of cone tilt-magnitude impossible. GPS receivers on the cone recorded continued contraction. Seismic tremor levels were at low values with a slight increase after 0630hrs. At the Kilauea the summit tiltmeter network recorded a DI (deflation-inflation) tilt event; the deflation started at 0920hrs, January 22, and the deflation started at 1030hrs, January 23. This is the second DI tilt event in the last week; rain coincided with the inflation portion of both events. Seismic tremor levels continued at low-to-moderate values with a slight increase during the DI tilt event. Two small earthquakes were located beneath the southwest rift zone and on south flank faults. Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emission rates from the summit area continued to be elevated at 2-3 times background levels. Shield vents are normally built directly over a lava-supplying fissure, as is the case for the TEB shield. Rootless shield vents are not built directly over a lava-supplying fissure and are, instead, fed horizontally from a fissure. Rootless shields have been built over lava tubes in the last few years. Perched ponds or channels: A lava pond or channel becomes perched above the surrounding terrain when repeated overflows build up their edges. The built-up edges are called levees. The perching continues as long as the overflows continue.
